(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 19, 2022 – The Cambridge Dictionary defines a race car driver as “a person who drives a car in a competition to see who can be the fastest and finish first.”
Alex Pokorski was carrying out that very definition behind the wheel of the No. 4 Akright Auto Racing Team 360 Sprint Car in the opening laps of the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car 25-lap A-main at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. on Saturday, July 16.
While running second in the 22-car main event field, Pokorski had his sights set firmly on tracking down the leading car of Travis Arenz when on lap 5 his car launched into a wild series of flips, cartwheels and pirouettes, which included hard contact with the turn four fence.
While the hard crash left his No. 4 machine heavily crumpled with a garden variety of damage on multiple sections of the car, Pokorski emerged from the melee uninjured.
“The car was fast all night,” Pokorski said. “The track was fast as well and had a big cushion that I caught just wrong. Fortunately, I’m doing well. It was amazing to watch the video of the accident, after walking away with barely a bruise.”
With a strong field of 32 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars on hand, the night got off to a promising start as Pokorski turned the second-fastest qualifying time in the first heat race grouping and the 17th fastest overall qualifying lap with a time of 12.816 seconds.
After starting third in the first 10-lap PDTR 360 Sprint Car heat race, Pokorski slipped underneath outside front row starter Tim Haddy to take over second in turn one of the opening lap. Pokorski kept up a quick pace on the lightning fast and tacky track surface throughout the race to finish second and earn an automatic transfer to the A main.
Pokorski lined up on the outside of the front row of the 25-lap main event beside polesitter Travis Arenz and settled into second in the running order in turn two of the opening lap.
The third-year 360 Sprint Car driver tested the treacherous cushion during the first few laps of the main event in an effort to close the gap on the leader. However, the undulating cushion jumped up and bit Pokorski on lap 5 to end his night and relegate him to a 21st place finish.
“We are going to take everything apart and hopefully get it back together for this coming Saturday at Plymouth,” Pokorski said. “I’m thankful for my car owner, Spyder Akright, my parents, crew and sponsors for supporting me this year. It’s been a bit rough, but hopefully we can get some good luck and finishes going forward.”
Saturday’s accident at The Plymouth Dirt Track forced the team to skip the Akright Auto Midwest Sprint Car Association event at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis. on Sunday, July 17.
Alex Pokorski and the Akright Auto Racing Team are aiming to return to competition at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. this Saturday, July 23.
This Saturday is the inaugural Plymouth Racing Wall of Fame Induction Night with the new Wall of Fame display set to debut underneath the grandstands and the Class of 2022 inductees recognized during intermission.
Spectator gates open at 4:30 p.m. with PDTR 360 Sprint Car group qualifying at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m.
