EWSC to promote races at Outagamie Speedway in 2017

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 5, 2017 – Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars has reached an agreement with the Outagamie County Fair Association to promote a Sunday night racing program at the renamed Outagamie Speedway in Seymour, Wisconsin, during the 2017 season.

Despite exhaustive efforts to put together firm plans for the 2017 racing season, both entities found themselves facing an uncertain future.

After 12 years of staging a Friday night racing program at the Manitowoc Speedway, the track property was sold following the 2016 racing season, leaving the 58-year-old racing organization without a home track.

The former Seymour Raceway Park ran a shortened schedule in 2016 and had been in search of a promoter to make the 2017 season a reality.

“We were originally contacted by the Outagamie County Fair Association and due to the distance from most of the EWSC members, we were hesitant at first,” EWSC President Todd Humphrey said. “After further discussions, we determined that we could put together a race program utilizing people that were already in place in Seymour.”

While EWSC had pursued other possibilities for racing this season, none had come to fruition.

“The EWSC Board had considered the race track at the fairgrounds in Chilton and we had also talked with Bob Schneider at Gravity Park near Chilton as well,” Humphrey said. “Those possibilities did not advance out of the discussion stage for 2017.”

The weekly Sunday night racing program will feature familiar divisions at Seymour track, including IMCA-sanctioned modifieds, sport mods, stock cars, and sport fours, along with street stocks.

The 2017 season is set to begin Sunday, May 28 and continue through Sunday, Sept. 3.

“We are planning on running 14 nights in 2017,” Humphrey said. “We will not be running during the Outagamie County Fair July 25-30. We may also consider having a sprint car show and a late model show and possibly an end-of-season special, which may be the September 3rd show. We are still working on final schedule.”

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with the grandstand opening at 5 p.m. and racing set to begin at 6 p.m.

Grandstand admission will be $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 60 and over, $5 for students 12-15 and free for children 11 and under.

Humphrey says EWSC is looking forward to the opportunity to continue its long history of successful race promotion at a new facility.

“We are very excited to provide racing in the Seymour area,” Humphrey said. “This is currently a one-year deal with the option to renew an extended contract should 2017 prove to be profitable.

“We did have some reservations with the travel distance for most of our board members and those that choose to travel with us, since most of them are based in the Sheboygan area,” he said. “However, we have been invigorated by everyone that has expressed their willingness to assist us on a weekly basis.”

Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars, Inc. was established after the 1959 race season and began sanctioning races in May 1960 at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth. Starting in 1961, EWSC promoted races on Wednesday nights at the Calumet County Fairgrounds in Chilton. In 1966, the club began making weekly appearances at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, first racing on Thursday nights and switching to Wednesday nights after discontinuing weekly shows in Chilton in 1974. EWSC members voted to end the club’s partnership with 141 Speedway in 1981.

In addition to Plymouth, Chilton, and 141 Speedway, the club has sanctioned races at Beaver Dam, Slinger and Fond du Lac. In 2005, EWSC started promoting weekly racing at the Manitowoc County Expo grounds. In 2016, EWSC promoted races under the title of Manitowoc Speedway, running weekly shows featuring seven divisions of regular competition, including 360 Sprint cars, Late Models, Modifieds, Grand Nationals, Sport Mods, Sport Fours, and Thunder Trucks. EWSC also hosted two IRA Bumper to Bumper sprint car shows and the Street Stocks visited the track on three occasions in 2016.

Seven champions honored in final season at Manitowoc Speedway

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) December 12, 2016 – With its future hanging in limbo, Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car racing officials, drivers, pit crew members, supporters and fans gathered at City Limits Bar and Banquet Hall in Manitowoc to toast a highly competitive 2016 racing season at the Manitowoc Speedway, during the 56th annual EWSC Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 10.

While the mood was predominately festive with champions, hard charger and rookie of the year award recipients officially recognized for their standout performances during the 2016 season, there was an underlying feeling of melancholy and uncertainty as expressed by EWSC President Todd Humphrey in his opening remarks.

“Going back to last year around this time we had just wrapped up our 2015 season awards banquet when things took a turn in mid-December,” Humphrey said. “Not long after that, the reality set in that the Expo grounds had been sold and the 2016 would be our last at the Manitowoc Speedway.

“We started the season with a string of rain outs, but once we got through that, our season really got running good,” he said. “I could never have imagined that on our last night at Manitowoc, we would have a field of 173 cars. The success of the 2016 season is a testament to all of you guys gathered here tonight. I want to thank you all for putting on a hell of a show throughout the year.”

Humphrey paid tribute to the EWSC staff members who gave their time to ensure the final season of racing at the Manitowoc Speedway was one to remember.

“I want to recognize our staff of volunteers who gave so much of themselves during the season,” Humphrey said. “From the flagman, to the corner workers to the lineup people, the scorers the concession stand works, the list goes on. It was a true team effort. We couldn’t have asked for a better staff.

“I can’t go without mentioning our track prep crew,” he said. “I think all of us can agree that we had great tracks all season long. I would say we had zero bad tracks all year. Maybe we had a couple of nights that were not quite as good, but not many. No matter what, there was always plenty of racing surface for our drivers to put on an awesome show for the fans.”

After several months of waiting for the official word to come down about the final sale of the track, Humphrey spoke about the efforts of staff volunteers to clear out EWSC’s equipment from the track grounds in advance of the Manitowoc County-mandated Dec. 16 vacancy deadline.

“The last three weeks have been a whirlwind for everyone,” Humphrey said. “Without the help of our members, especially people like last year’s Sport Mod champ Rick Kretschmann, Dale Bauer and this year’s Late Model champion Tim Buhler, I don’t know where we’d be. I also have to thank Dennis Hill and Vetting Transport for all they have done in the past few weeks to help us vacate the track property.”

All seven 2016 EWSC champions were then honored for their stellar seasons.

Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee collected his first ever EWSC championship in the Sport Mod division.

Bruechert, who topped runner-up Travis Arenz of Sheboygan by two points (498-496) in the final standings, finished the season with one A-main victory, seven top-five A main finishes, 11 top-ten A main showings and four heat race victories in 12 events.

“I didn’t set out to run for the championship, but everything fell into place,” Bruechert said. “I had fun all year long and in the end it turned out to be a blast. I remember getting my first win at Manty back in 1990 in a stock car on the half mile.  It was really nice to come back to Manitowoc and meet a lot of great people in the process.

“I’ve raced for 27 years at a lot of different tracks and the track prep this year at Manitowoc was second to none,” he said. “It is saying something when you can go out in your heat race and run three and four wide and not worry about sliding into the guard rail. The track was always smooth and really racy.”

John Rothmund of Manitowoc, who finished third in the Sport Mod points standings, picked up the Sport Mod Rookie of the Year Award and Travis Arenz was also honored with the 2016 Sport Mod Hard Charger Award for passing 60 cars in 11 A-main events.

Rounding out the top five in the Sport Mod point standings were Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc in fourth and Jayden Schmidt of Seymour fifth.

Jamie Schmidt of Seymour notched the 2016 Modified championship with five top-five A-main showings, eight top-10 A-main finishes and three heat race triumphs in nine races.

Schmidt topped runner-up Randy Markwardt Jr. of Sheboygan Falls by a 23-point margin (368-345) in the final point standings. Matt Jackson of Sheboygan was third, followed by Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers (fourth) and Eric Scribner of Kiel (fifth).

“I would like to thank everyone at Manitowoc Speedway,” Schmidt said. “It was a great place to race.”

Kyle Kudick was the 2016 EWSC Modified Hard Charger Award winner for passing 25 cars in seven A-main races.

Brad Lubach of Kiel, who recorded two A-main victories, nine top-five and nine top-10 A-main showings to go along with five heat race victories in 11 events, captured the Grand National title by a slim two-point margin over Justin Erickson of Plymouth.

“I want to thank my wife, mom and dad, as well as my great crew and all of my sponsors for a great year,” Lubach said. “I also want to recognize EWSC for all that they did this year. Manitowoc Speedway has been one of my favorite tracks. It sucks that it’s going to be gone.”

Ryan Minster of Sheboygan, who finished third in the final point standings, captured the Grand National Hard Charger Award for passing a division best 56 cars in 11 A-main events.

Steven Weber of Plymouth finished fourth and Tim Simon of Fond du Lac rounded out the top five in the Grand National point standings.

The 2016 EWSC Late Model championship hardware went to Tim Buhler of Glenbeulah for the second consecutive year. Buhler, who also picked up the Late Model Hard Charger Award for passing 30 cars in A-main action, posted two A-main victories, four top-five A-main finishes, seven top-10 A-main showings and two heat race wins in eight nights of competition.

“I’ve been to a lot of different tracks in my career and one of the main things I learned from racing at Manitowoc is that the track crew for EWSC is pretty darn good,” Buhler said.

Rounding out the top five in the 2016 EWSC Late Model point standings were Jim Schmidt of Cleveland (second), Justin Schmidt of Cleveland (third), Turk Letizia of Milwaukee (fourth) and Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha (fifth).

Brandon McMullen of Plymouth picked up the 2016 Sprint Car championship, topping West Bend’s Paul Pokorski by four points (247-243) in the final point standings.

McMullen claimed one A-main victory, three top-five A main finishes, six top-ten showings and three heat race victories in six races in 2016.

“My family has been racing with EWSC for a long time,” McMullen said. “Eastern has had its ups and downs over the years, but it has definitely been on the upswing in the past couple years with this group of board members and staff. Manitowoc is definitely one of the best tracks I’ve ever been on.

“I have to thank my family for all of their support,” he said. “It means a lot to have them be there every night for me. It was fun racing with Paul [Pokorski] for the championship. It was fitting with our EWSC backgrounds that Paul and I were racing for the championship right down to the final night of the season. Paul raced me clean all year. He is a great guy on and off the track.”

Rounding out the top five in the final Sprint Car point standings were Kurt Davis of West Allis (third), Danny Schlafer of Sussex (fourth) and Doug Wondra of Oakfield (fifth).

Danny Schlafer was recognized with the Sprint Car Hard Charger Award for passing 24 cars in six A-main events and Tyler Brabant of Waupun earned the Sprint Car Rookie of the Year Award.

Shaun Bangart of Chilton claimed six A-main victories, 10 top-five and top-ten A-main showings and five heat race wins in 11 races en route to the Sport 4 title. Bangart also claimed the Sport 4 Hard Charger Award by passing a total of 43 cars in 10 A-main races.

Mitchell Meier of Chilton, who placed second in the Sport 4 point standings, earned the 2016 Sport 4 Rookie of the Award. Mike Meier of Chilton (third), Matt DeWilde (fourth) and Jason Dondlinger (fifth) completed the top five.

Walker Bergene of Whitelaw claimed the Thunder Truck track title and Rooke of the Year Award on the strength of eight A-main victories, 10 top-five and top-10 A-main finishes and six heat race triumphs in 10 events.

Humphrey assured those in attendance that EWSC leaders plan to keep the club alive in hopes of finding a new home track.

“Our future is up in the air at this point,” Humphrey said. “I strongly believe that we will continue somewhere in the future. We will be holding our Bowling Bash at Odyssey Fun Center in Sheboygan Falls on February 4th, so we encourage everyone to come out on that day and celebrate Eastern. Maybe we will have some good news to share at that point.”

Founding EWSC member Kermit Schulz of Manitowoc closed the award ceremony with some final words on the longstanding racing organization.

“I was around in 1960 when Eastern first formed,” Schulz said. “I don’t think there are too many original members still around from back then. I think Jerry McMullen is one of them, but not many others are still here. I want to take this time to thank Eastern for keeping racing going in this area for 56 years. I hope it goes on, but right now one never knows.”

EWSC rules out Chilton

Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars ends talks for return to Chilton

Manitowoc, WI – At this point in time, Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars, Inc (EWSC) has determined it is in the best interest of the club and its members for its Board of Directors to end discussions with the Calumet County Agricultural Association (CCAA) regarding the possible return of weekly racing to the Calumet County Fairgrounds.

The EWSC Board of Directors has met with CCAA President Jeff Wunrow on several occasions over the past 10 months and we feel that the he has no intentions of negotiating fairly. We had hopes when the CCAA Board formally requested information that there was a possibility that EWSC’s weekly racing program would return to Chilton after 43 years. However, as we set out to gather the requested information, we have constantly been met with resistance from Mr. Wunrow.

In the wake of all that has transpired, the EWSC Board of Directors has reached the conclusion that it will no longer actively seek to promote weekly racing at the Calumet County Fairgrounds. If there is a desire for those in the Chilton community and the members of CCAA to work in conjunction with EWSC to improve the grounds and discuss a fair and just contract between the two entities, we would entertain those plans at a future date. EWSC thanks county leaders for the opportunity and we wish them all the best

EWSC stages grand farewell for Manitowoc Speedway

Seven champions crowned in Manitowoc swan song

By Jeff Pederson, Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 3, 2016 – With a capacity crowd of well-wishers in a bustling grandstand and an overflow contingent of 179 cars in the jam-packed pit area, Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars crowned track champions and honored race winners for the final time ever at the Manitowoc Speedway Saturday, Sept. 3.

The spectacular turnout of present and past drivers, crews, sponsors, fans and track workers provided for a fitting conclusion to EWSC’s 12-year run at the Manitowoc Speedway facility.

The evening was bittersweet for all racing supporters on hand as the speedway is scheduled to close and be removed as the Meijer store chain is currently in final negotiations with Manitowoc County to purchase a portion of the Manitowoc Expo Speedway, including the grandstand and race track area.

As a result, the future of EWSC, which has sanctioned races in the area since 1960, remains in doubt.

On the track, the competition on the track’s final night was in large part what racers and fans have come to expect at Manitowoc Speedway – highly competitive and action-packed. The evening featured 36 total races, including 23 heats, 5 B mains and 8 A mains completed in a span of 5 and a half hours.

The final group of Manitowoc Speedway track titlists etched their names into the record books. The list of 2016 EWSC champions includes Brandon McMullen of Plymouth (Sprint Cars), Tim Buhler of Greenbush (Late Models), Jamie Schmidt of Seymour (Modifieds), Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee (Sport Mods), Brad Lubach of Kiel (Grand Nationals), Shaun Bangart of Chilton (Sport 4s) and Walker Bergene of Whitelaw (Thunder Trucks).

Seven A main winners took home trophies as well. Jim Melis of Glenbeulah earned his first Sprint Car A main triumph of the season, Mitch McGrath of Waukesha earned his second Late Model A main victory of 2016 at Manitowoc, Shawn Kilgore of New Franken made his first Manitowoc Speedway appearance of the season count with an A-main victory in the Modified headliner, Sheboygan’s Travis Arenz racked up his fourth A-main triumph of the season in the Sport Mod division, Kodiak Wirtz of Menomonee Falls claimed his third Grand National main event win, Chilton’s Shaun Bangart won the Sport 4 main event for the sixth time this year, Brandon Peterson of Sturgeon Bay earned his first Thunder Truck main event victory and Edward Anschutz of Two Rivers claimed the victory in the SBR Customs Matt Schuh Memorial Street Stock feature race.

The evening’s events began with a tribute to Matt Schuh of Manitowoc, who lost his life after suffering a medical problem while competing in a Grand National heat race, during the EWSC racing program on Aug. 24.

Schuh’s fellow firefighters from the Valders and Whitelaw volunteer fire departments were on hand, as well as the firefighters and first responders who tended to Schuh at the track on Aug. 24. All 29 Grand National drivers in attendance took a lap around the track and the Street Stock car of Erik Turner of Two Rivers carried the black flag during the National Anthem in Schuh’s honor.

After the initial start of the 20-lap Sprint Car A main was waved off for a spin involving outside front row starter Nich Melis of Plymouth, polesitter Jim Melis jumped into the lead on the drop of the green flag.

Third starter Lance Fassbender of Burnett followed closely in Melis’ tire tracks along on the far outside lane of the smooth, multi-groove racing surface.

The second caution flag of the race appeared on lap 7 after Tyler Brabant of Waupun spun in turn three.

On the ensuring restart Fassbender attempted a slide job in the first and second turns, but Melis was able to power around on the outside to maintain the top spot. Melis, Fassbender and fifth starter Scotty Neitzel of Beaver Dam, who was running third in Bob Hood’s 10w car, encountered lapped traffic on lap 15, which allowed Fassbender to close in and make another bid for the lead.

Fassbender was able to pull even with Melis as the two maneuvered around a slower car in turn four on lap 18, but again Melis was able to maintain the lead.

The 35-year veteran driver held on over the final two laps to notch his 17th career Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) A main victory and his first of the season at Manitowoc. Fassbender was second, Neitzel took third, Kurt Davis of West Allis came from his ninth starting spot to finish fourth and fourth starter Wayne Modjeski of Oak Creek placed fifth.

Brandon McMullen, who came into the A main leading Paul Pokorski of West Bend by just two points in the race for the Sprint Car track title. McMullen placed seventh in the A main, while Pokorski was ninth, giving McMullen his first EWSC Sprint Car championship at Manitowoc Speedway.

Polesitter Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan led the first lap of the 25-lap Late Model A main, while seventh starter Mitch McGrath charged through the pack to wrestle the lead away from Markwardt in turn three on lap 2.

By lap 13, McGrath had to deal with lapped traffic, which helped fifth starter Justin Schmidt of Cleveland move within striking distance. After hounding McGrath for eight laps, Schmidt pulled to the outside and maneuvered around McGrath and a slower car to assume the lead on lap 21.

However, Schmidt’s lead was short-lived as McGrath battled back to regain the lead using the outside groove on lap 22.

McGrath pulled way over the final three laps to notch his second victory of the season at Manitowoc, while Schmidt wound up second in the caution-free race. Tony Peterson of Big Bend recorded a strong third-place showing after starting fourth, eighth starter Jim Schmidt of Cleveland took fourth and sixth starter Taylor Schleffler of Waukesha came home fifth.

Tim Buhler placed sixth to secure the 2016 EWSC Late Model championship.

A highly competitive Modified A main featured four different leaders over the action-packed 20 lap race distance.

Outside front row starter Matt Jackson of Sheboygan paced the first lap before fourth starter Jamie Schmidt took over the top spot on lap 2. One lap later, third starter Mark Joski of Denmark passed Schmidt to grab the lead.

As Joski held the top spot over the next nine laps, heated battles were taking place all over the place behind him as Shawn Kilgore sliced through the field from his 12th starting spot to assume third place on lap five.

Following a caution on lap 10 for debris, Kilgore made his move on lap 11, sliding past Schmidt to assume the top spot with 11th starter Jeremy Jacobs of Luxemburg trailing close behind.

As Kilgore held his own in front of the field, Jacobs and Joski dueled back and forth in the closing laps for the runner-up spot. Kilgore raced away to score the A main victory in his first appearance at Manitowoc this year. Joski took second, Eric Scribner of Kiel placed third after starting fifth, Jacobs was fourth and Russ Reinwald of Iron Ridge, who started sixth, took fifth.

Jamie Schmidt finished sixth to secure the 2016 EWSC Modified track championship.

Polesitter Jayden Schmidt of Seymour grabbed the lead in turn one on lap 1 of the 20-lap Sport Mod A main, while Hunter Parsons of Green Bay, John Rothmund of Manitowoc and Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc engaged in an epic duel for second place.

After a five-car pileup brought out a caution on lap 4, Travis Arenz began to make his presence felt as he moved into second on lap 6 before powering past Schmidt in turn three on lap 9.

Over the final 11 laps, Rothmund charged in to pull up to Arenz’s bumper on a few occasions and Chris Budzban of Luxemburg moved up from his 11th starting spot to seize the third position.

Arenz held on to claim his fourth victory of the season at Manitowoc, followed by Rothmund in second, Budzban took third, Schroeder placed fourth and eighth starter Travis Hansen of Brillion was fifth.

Brian Bruechert finished seventh to wrap up the 2016 EWSC Sport Mod Manitowoc Speedway track championship.

After two multi-car incidents negated the first two attempts to start the 20-lap Grand National A main, polesitter Steven Wirtz of led the first three laps of the race.

On lap four, third starter Tyler Kulow of Plymouth passed Wirtz with a low move to take over the lead. One lap later, 10th starter Kodiak Wirtz raced past both Steven Wirtz and Kulow with a nifty low move on lap five.

One lap later, Don Sorce Jr. of West Allis raced into second place from his 13th starting spot and began to close on Kodiak Wirtz at the front of the field.

Kodiak Wirtz held off runner-up Sorce Jr. and sixth starter Brad Lubach, who came home third to secure the Grand National season points championship. Eighth starter Mark Fieber of Cascade placed fourth and Jeff Lammers of Plymouth finished fifth after starting 16th.

Ryan Minster of Sheboygan went into the night as the Grand National point leader. However, a rear end failure relegated him to a 19th place finish in the A main and allowed Lubach to claim the Grand National track title.

In the 10-lap Sport 4 A main, Shaun Bangart notched his sixth main event victory of the season to nail down the 2016 track championship. Nathan Lisowe of Chilton was second, Chris Maas of Oakfield placed third, Cody Pankow of Lomira took fourth and Brody Rivest of Sheboygan rounded out the top five.

Brandon Peterson was the winner in the 6-lap Thunder Truck A main, followed by 2016 Thunder Truck track champion Walker Bergene in second and Mark Starr of Seymour in third.

Edward Anschutz prevailed in the SBR Customs Matt Schuh Memorial Street Stock A main over Erik Turner (second), Andy Fuhrmann of Brillion (third), Dustin Holland of Burlington (fourth) and Cody Potter of Pell Lake (fifth).

EWSC mourns loss of racer

Final race ever at Manitowoc Speedway set next Saturday

By Jeff Pederson, Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 24, 2016 – The auto racing community is as close-knit, resilient and strong as any group of people you will come across anywhere.

Local racers, pit crew members, family members, fans, sponsors and track workers have been leaning heavily on those traits since Manitowoc’s Matt Schuh passed away while competing in the third Grand National division heat race during the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car racing program, which was held as part of the Manitowoc County Fair Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Schuh suffered a medical problem while running in the race and lost consciousness before colliding with the infield guardrail. He was 27 years old.

The race was red flagged for approximately 45-minutes while safety and emergency service personnel worked to free Schuh from the car.

The EWSC Board of Directors released the following statement the day after Schuh’s passing.

“On behalf of the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars Board of Directors and its staff, we would like to extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Matt Schuh, one of our drivers who passed away last night, Wednesday Aug. 24, while competing in our Grand National division at Manitowoc Speedway.”

In racing action, Brandon McMullen of Plymouth collected his first EWSC Sprint Car A main victory of the season at Manitowoc and fourth overall main event triumph of the 2016 campaign.

In the Late Model division, Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha notched his initial triumph at Manitowoc this year in the 25-lap A main. Kodiak Wirtz of Menomonee Falls collected his second Manitowoc Speedway victory of the season in the 20-lap A main event, while Travis Hansen of Brillion earned his first win of 2016 in the 20-lap Sport Mod main event.

Outside front row starter Doug Wondra of Oakfield grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag of the time-shortened 21 lap Sprint Mar main event. Wondra held the top spot as a pair of caution flags slowed the action in the early, one for an infield cone the track on lap 2 and another shortly after when Lance Fassbender of Burnett lost a front tire on the frontstretch.

When the race resumed, eighth starter Jim Melis of Glenbeulah, who was making his first Manitowoc Speedway appearance of the year, moved into second on lap 5, while seventh starter Brandon McMullen and 12th starter Danny Schlafer of Sussex slipped into third and fourth place respectively.

On lap 14, McMullen worked past Melis to assume second place briefly before the high-riding Schlafer powered past Melis and McMullen using the outside groove to grab second place. One lap later, Schlafer bolted around Wondra to take over the top spot as the leaders worked their way through dense lapped traffic.

The third caution of the race appeared on lap 16 for the stalled car of Alex Bliesner of Plymouth along the backstretch. Another yellow flag flew when Chris Clayton of Waldo and Tony Wondra of Campbellsport each spun in turn two.

When the green flag appeared again, Schlafer moved high again in an attempt to pull away from the field. However, Schlafer’s machine suffered mechanical problems on lap 17 when found him stopped up against the turn four wall.

Schlafer’s exit allowed McMullen to take over the top position. McMullen dashed away from his rivals on the restart and quickly built up a solid cushion over the second-place car of Jim Melis.

The race was declared official when Josh Teunissen of Waldo stopped in the infield and the time limit expired on lap 21.

McMullen collected is 12th career Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) A main victory, followed by Jim Melis of Glenbeulah, Wondra in third. Tim Haddy of Waupun came from 10th to place fourth and 15th starter Justin Miller of Plymouth completed the top five.

In the 25-lap Late Model A main, outside front row starter Bill Rezutek of Big Bend grabbed the initial lead on lap 1, while Taylor Schleffer of Waukesha moved into the runner-up spot from his fifth starting spot.

Scheffler closed quickly on Rezutek before executing a low pass for the lead in turn three on lap 4.

The lone caution flag of the race appeared on lap 5 for a spin involving point leader Tim Buhler of Greenbush, who started eighth and seventh starter Jim Schmidt of Cleveland.

Buhler battled back from the incident quickly to battle his way into second place on lap 8. Buhler then mounted a charge to cut the gap against Scheffler, Buhler attempted a low move on the high riding Scheffler on lap 12, but the young Waukesha driver was up the challenge.

Scheffler pulled away from Buhler on lap 15 and never looked back en route to his first victory at Manitowoc this season. Buhler was second, Tom Naeyaert of Shawano took third after starting 12th and sixth starter Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth was fourth.

Outside front row starter Matt Jackson of Sheboygan jumped into the lead on the drop of the green flag of the 20-lap Grand National main event with third starter Brian Gilles of Plymouth following close behind in second.

On lap later, Gilles moved in to challenge Jackson for the top spot before taking over the position on lap 3. Meanwhile, Kodiak Wirtz was slicing his to the front of the field from his 10th starting position.

After dueling side by side with Gilles for several laps, Wirtz surged ahead on lap 12 along the high groove. However, Gilles refused to back down as he moved in to race side-by-side with Wirtz starting again on lap 17.

Despite Gilles’ attempts to retake the lead, Wirtz rolled on to his second Grand National A main victory of the season at Manitowoc. Gilles was second, Dan Sorce of Franklin roared up from his 18th starting spot to take third, Brad Lubach of Kiel finished fourth after starting 14th and Jackson completed the top five.

The 20-lap Sport Mod A main featured action galore at the front of the field. Polesitter Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls grabbed the early lead followed by third starter Kyle Raddant of Shawano.

Following two cautions for multi-car incidents on lap 4, Travis Hansen, who started eighth, began to make his presence felt using the extreme high line to seize third place in turn one on lap 7.

For the remainder of the race, Hansen, Raddant and sixth starter Wyatt Block of Tigerton mounted an epic three-way battle for the top spot, with Hansen working high, Raddant racing low and Block lurking in the middle of the highly racy and smooth track surface.

After Raddant surged ahead briefly on lap 15, Hansen powered his way back into the lead before the lap was completed. Following another caution flag on lap 16, Hansen, Block of Raddant went at it again for the final four laps, but it was Hansen who prevailed at the finish line to earn his first Manitowoc triumph of the 2016 campaign.

Block placed second, Raddant was third, Bill Edler of Howards Grove charged up from the 12th starting spot to finish fourth and ninth starter Tom Schneider of Chilton rounded out the top five.

The evening drew a strong field of 96 cars in four divisions for a race night presented by the Manitowoc County Fair.

After 12 years of competing at the Manitowoc Speedway, EWSC will draw the curtain on racing competition the Manitowoc track with its 2016 season finale event Saturday, Sept. 3, It will be the last racing program ever to be held at the track.

The special racing program will feature all seven regular EWSC divisions, including Sprint Cars, Late Models, Grand Nationals, Modifieds, Sport Mods, Sport Fours and Thunder Trucks, with action to begin one hour earlier than normal at 6 p.m.

EWSC invites all race fans to come out to bid farewell to the Manitowoc Speedway, which has become well known in recent years for top-notch racing conditions and highly competitive action in each of its divisions.

Anvelink makes first Manitowoc trip count with EWSC late model victory

Anvelink makes first trip count with EWSC late model victory

Kudick, Erickson, Schroeder, Rivest, Bergene, Klumb notch triump

By Jeff Pederson of Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 19, 2016 – On a night that featured a little bit of everything, from breathtaking last-lap passes and photo finishes to hard flips and multi-car pileups, it was Nick Anvelink of Bonduel who claimed the top prize in the 25-lap Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Late Model headliner Friday night at Manitowoc Speedway.

Making his first start of the season at Manitowoc, Anvelink bested a stout field of 21 Late Models to claim the A main victory in a race which carried an elevated $1,000 first place payout.

In the Modified division Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers held off a spirited last-lap challenge from Eric Scribner of Kiel to claim the 20-lap A main. Justin Erickson of Plymouth nipped Ryan Minster of Sheboygan in a photo finish to cap an entertaining 20-lap Grand National A main.

Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc was the victor in the 20-lap Sport Mod main event, while Brody Rivest of Sheboygan claimed the 12-lap Sport 4 A main in his initial appearance at Manitowoc Speedway this season. Walker Bergene of Whitelaw topped a field of three Thunder Trucks in the A main and Dennis Klumb of Adell came out on top in the main event for the visiting Winged Super Modified division.

After the initial start was negated for a spin involving Charlie Schmidt of Oostburg, outside front row starter Brett Swedberg of Shawano bolted past polesitter Ron Stroika of Mukwonago to take the lead in turn four on the opening lap

As Swedberg pulled away along the cushion, fifth starter Turk Letizia of Milwaukee used the outside groove to work past Stroika in turn two. Meanwhile, Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha was charging his way to the front of field as the moved into fourth place on lap 5 and passed Stroika to assume third two laps later.

Later on lap 7, Mitch McGrath of Waukesha slowed on the back stretch after losing a driveshaft to bring out the first caution flag of the event.

On the restart, a red flag was displayed to the field following a major incident on the frontstretch triggered by chain reaction contact between Justin Hirt of Tigerton, Justin Schmidt of Cleveland, Joe Bongiorno of Milwaukee and Dave Thomas of Franklin. Schmidt ended up flipping in the melee, which forced all four drivers to retire from the race.

After the restart, Scheffler cleared Letizia for third with a low move in turn two and quickly tracked down the high riding Swedberg on lap 8 before seizing the top spot in turn two on lap 9.

Nick Anvelink, who started 12th, moved into third place by passing Letizia on lap 10 before diving underneath Swedberg for second place on lap 11.

As Scheffler caught up to lapped traffic on lap 16, Anvelink cut into the gap significantly moving into challenge for the top spot on lap 18. After running an impressive race, Scheffler’s hopes of gaining the victory came to an end as he slowing with mechanical trouble on lap 20 to bring out another caution.

With Scheffler out of the race, Anvelink assumed the top spot in front of 11th starter Mike Mullen of Seymour in second and Swedberg in third. The former winner of the prestigious George Scheffler Memorial Race at Manitowoc pulled away over the final five years to post his first victory of the season at Manitowoc in his season debut at the track.

Mullen was second, followed by Swedberg in third, seventh starter Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth fourth and Turk Letizia in fifth.

The action was equally fast and furious in an action-packed 20-lap Grand National A main, which featured four different leaders.

Dan Schumacher of Germantown assumed the lead on the first lap from his outside front row starting spot before a spin by Brad Lubach of Kiel brought out an early caution.

On the restart, an eight-car pileup in between turns three and four slowed the pace again. Seven of the eight cars in the involving in the incident where able to return to action, while Chris Gilson of Elkhart Lake was knocked out of the race.

When the race resumed, fifth starter Tyler Kulow of Plymouth moved into the top spot with a low move in turn one with outside second row starter Josh Pierce of Fredonia following in second.

Point leader Ryan Minster moved up from the 12th starting position to battle with Kulow and Pierce for the lead, as the three drivers mounted a spirited duel for the top spot for six laps before Minster slid between Kulow and Pierce to gain the lead in turn two on lap 8.

Minster controlled the race for the next 11 laps, while eighth starter Justin Erickson of moved into second place on lap 12. Erickson steadily gained on Minster over the next seven laps to set up a thrilling battle to the finish on the white flag lap.

Erickson dove underneath Minster in turn two on the final lap and the two determined drivers raced side by side down the backstretch before Erickson again shot low in turns three and four to nudge his way in front of Minster.

When the dust cleared, it was Erickson nipping Minster at the line by half a car length to earn his first victory at Manitowoc Speedway this season. Despite leading the most laps in the race, Minster had to settle for second, Kulow was third, followed by seventh starter Tim Simon of Fond du Lac in fourth and Brad Lubach, who battled back from an opening lap spin to place fifth.

The Modified A main featured an equally fabulous finish courtesy of the fleet tandem of Kyle Kudick and Eric Scribner.

Joel Crowbridge of Union Grove grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag from his outside front row starting spot. On lap 3, seventh starter Kyle Kudick assumed second place and quickly set his sights on the leader.

After the lone caution flag of the race flew on lap 9 for the stalled car of Ben Godlewski of Sussex, Kudick bolted past Crowbridge to grab the lead on the restart.

As Kudick paced the field, Scribner, who started fifth, raced into second place on lap 13 and began to pressure Kudick for the lead. With Kudick running high and Scribner down low, the two dueled side by side to the finish with Kudick holding off Scribner’s final lap charge by a matter of mere feet to claim his second Modified victory of the season at Manitowoc.

Scribner wound up second, followed by Crowbridge in third, polesitter Matt Jackson of Sheboygan in fourth and third starter Joel Seegert of Sheboygan fifth.

Jayden Schmidt of Seymour grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag from his outside front row starting position of the Sport Mod A main.

Schmidt held the top spot before a red flag halted the race by a four-car incident involving Justin Bauer of Sheboygan Falls, John Rothmund of Manitowoc, Glenn Blanke of Sheboygan Falls and Chad Vetting of Valders. Rothmund spun exiting four turn and, with nowhere to go, Bauer hit Rothmund’s car head on before flipping. Despite the heavy contact, both drivers emerged from their cars without injury.

Schmidt continued to lead when the race resumed, but he quickly began to feel pressure from fifth starter Cody Schroeder. The 2014 Manitowoc Speedway Sport Mod track champion, ducked low on lap 5 to challenge Schmidt for the lead. The two drivers battled door handle to door handle over the better part of the next six laps, before Schroeder finally surged ahead in turn two on lap 11.

Meanwhile, seventh starter Travis Arenz of Sheboygan assumed second place on lap 12 and closed on Schroeder on lap 14. However, Schroeder proved to be too strong as he maintained a solid advantage en route to his first Sport Mod A main victory of the season at Manitowoc.

Arenz was second, followed by sixth starter Travis Hansen of Brillion in third, point leader Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee, who started eighth, in fourth and third starter Hunter Parsons of Green Bay fifth.

In the 12-lap Sport 4 A main, fourth starter Brody Rivest took the lead from second starter Ben Meyerhofer of Menasha on lap 2 and cruised to a comfortable victory in his first appearance at Manitowoc Speedway this season.

Meyerhofer was second, Shaun Bangart, who started seventh, was third, Mike Zitzer of Sheboygan was fourth after starting eighth and Mitch Meier of Chilton finished fifth after starting sixth.

Walker Bergene was the victor in the Thunder Truck A main ahead of Tory Peterson of Sturgeon Bay and Mark Starr of Seymour.

Minster rides high groove to Grand National Nationals title

Minster rides high groove to Grand National Nationals title

Scribner, Arenz, Jungwirth, Maas claim Manitowoc A main victories

By Jeff Pederson

Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 5, 2016 – With extra prize money and additional prestige on the line, Ryan Minster of Sheboygan came through with a stirring late race charge along the rim of the track to claim the 30-lap Grand National Nationals A main victory in Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car racing action at the Manitowoc Speedway Friday, Aug. 5.

In the Modified division, Eric Scribner of Kiel captured his second consecutive 20-lap A main victory. Travis Arenz of Sheboygan netted his third A main triumph of the 2016 campaign in the 20-lap Sport Mod A main. Jeff Jungwirth of Oshkosh claimed the victory in the second and final Street Stock A main of the season at the Manitowoc Speedway, while Chris Maas of Oakfield claimed a wire-to-wire triumph in the 15-lap Sport 4 A main.

Polesitter Kodiak Wirtz of Menomonee Falls and outside front row starter Dan Sorce of Milwaukee led the field to the green flag in the Grand National Nationals main event. Wirtz and Sorce dueled side by side during the opening lap before Sorce surged ahead to gain the lead on lap 2.

As Sorce led the field, fifth starter Mark Fieber of Cascade moved up to assume third place. On lap 6, things really got interesting on the racy, multi-groove track when Fieber dove low, Wirtz stuck to the middle and Sorce road to the top of the speedway to set up a three-wide duel into turn one.

Fieber powered into the top spot before the first caution flag of the race flew on lap 7 for the stalled car of Steven Wirtz of Milwaukee. With scoring reverting to the lap before the caution, Fieber was relegated to third when the race returned to green flag action.

Again, Wirtz (low), Sorce (middle) and Fieber (high) battled three wide on lap 8 with Fieber gaining the top spot up high in turn four on lap 9. Fieber controlled the lead over the next 18 laps of the extended 30-lap event as battles for position raged behind him.

Ryan Minster, who started fourth worked his way into second place lap 11 and quickly set his sets on Fieber. After another caution came out on lap 20 for Kodiak Wirth, who stalled in turn two while running fourth, third starter Steven Weber of Plymouth wrestled second place away from Minster following the restart.

However, the man on the move was 10th starter Nick Schumacher of Eagle, who shot up the high groove and began picking off cars at will. Schumacher assumed second place on lap 21 and was closing on Fieber before a caution flag was displayed for the stalled car of Manitowoc’s Greg Haese in turn 1 on lap 23.

On the restart, the second-running Schumacher attempted to move from the inside lane to the outside lane in turn one, but ended up jumping the cushion. The miscue allowed Minster to streak into second place.

Minster, who came into the night leading the Grand National point standings, then moved up to the ultra-fast outside groove on lap 25 and began to quickly track down Fieber, who stayed tied to the inside lane. Minster pulled even with Fieber in turn 1 on lap 27 before powering ahead in turn four.

Once ahead, Minster pulled away to notch his first Grand National A main victory of the season at Manitowoc, while Schumacher came on strong up high to nip Fieber at the line for second. Fieber came home third, 11th starter Brad Lubach of Kiel placed fourth and Steven Wirtz, who originally started 14th, battled back after stalling out on lap 7 to place fifth.

The 20-lap Modified A main proved to be all Eric Scribner, who posted a dominating half-lap victory for the second week in a row.

Polesitter Mike Klenz of West Bend led the opening lap, before Scribner, who started fourth, surged into the lead along the high groove on lap 2. Scribner wasted no time building up a big full straightaway advantage over Klenz.

In the closing laps, seventh starter Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers outdueled ninth starter Brian Crapser to assume second place. Kudick followed Scribner to the finish line in second, followed by Crapser in third, Modified point leader and sixth starter Jamie Schmidt of Seymour in fourth and Klenz rounded out the top five.

Travis Arenz survived a late-race battled with Manitowoc’s John Rothmund and point leader Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee to capture his third EWC Sport Mod A main victory of 2016.

On the drop of the green flag polesitter Russ Franks and Rothmund engaged in a side-by-side duel with Franks maintaining a slight edge on the first two laps. Rothmund moved ahead on lap three, while Arenz, who started ninth, and the 10th starting Bruechert made their way to the front.

Arenz bolted into the lead on lap 10, but Rothmund stayed glued to his bumper during the remainder of the race with Bruechert and eight starter Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc also in hot pursuit.

Arenz held off all challengers en route to the victory, followed by Rothmund in second, Schroeder was third, Bruechert claimed fourth and fourth starter Jayden Schmidt of Seymour took fifth.

Outside front row starter Mark Baker paced the first nine laps of the A main for the visiting Street Street division before giving way to sixth starter Jeff Jungwirth on lap 10.

Josh McDonald of Hilbert, who started fourth, seized second place on lap 13, before 18th starter Alex Crapser charged all the way up from the rear to assume the runner-up spot one lap later. Crapser followed Jungwirth to the line in second, third starter Adam Crapser placed third, McDonald wound up fourth and Jesse Krahn took fifth.

Polesitter Chris Maas turned in an impressive flag-to-flag victory in the 15-lap Sport 4 main event. Ben Meyerhofer of Menasha worked his way up from the 10th starting spot to challenge Maas for the lead in the closing laps. However, Maas held on to claim his first Sport 4 A main victory at Manitowoc this season in just his second appearance at the track.

Meyerhofer finished second, but was later disqualified, Mike Meier of Chilton, who started sixth, placed third, point leader Shaun Bangart of Chilton placed fourth after starting ninth and Cody Pankow, who started 11th, rounded out the top five.

Walker Bergene of Whitelaw was the Thunder Truck winner.

The evening, which drew a field of 96 cars in six divisions, was presented by Pink Heals of Manitowoc County and Badger Brew and Que.

The EWSC races next Friday, Aug. 12 will feature Past Champions Night and topless night with racers encouraged to compete without a roof on their cars. Action will take place in the Late Model, Grand National, Modified, Sport Mod, Sport Four and Thunder Truck divisions.

Just four nights of racing remain until the Manitowoc Speedway closes for good following the completion of the 2016 season.

Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing to begin at 7 p.m.

Fassbender, Buhler headline winners at Manitowoc Speedway

Scribner, Steenbergen, Naidl, Bangart net A man victories

By Jeff Pederson

Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 29, 2016 – On a night when a huge field of 106 cars packed the pit area to capacity, a pair of veterans stole the headlines as Lance Fassbender of Burnett claimed his first victory of the season in the Sprint Car A main and Tim Buhler of Greenbush notched his second triumph of the 2016 campaign in the Late Model main event.

First-time winners ruled the evening as four of the evening’s six A main victors made their maiden visit to victory lane for the 2016 season.

One of those first-time winners was Jeff Steenbergen of Watertown, who held off Travis Arenz of Sheboygan and Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee to win an entertaining Sport Mod A main in his first appearance of the season at Manitowoc Speedway.

Eric Scribner of Kiel collected his first 2016 triumph in the Modified A main. Kevin Naidl of Reedsville outdueled Brad Lubach of Kiel to capture his initial 2016 win in the Grand National A main. Shaun Bangart of Chilton posted his fifth Sport 4 main event victory of the season, while Walker Bergene of Whitelaw was again the Thunder Truck victor.

After a false start for a spin involving Derek Siegel of Milwaukee on the initial green flag, Lance Fassbender charged into the lead from his inside second row starting spot with a bold move in the first turn on the opening lap of the 20-lap Sprint Car main event.

The former Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) champion wasted no time building up a huge half lap lead over fifth starter Justin Miller of Plymouth. Fassbender caught lapped traffic on lap 10, but even that didn’t slow him down as he skillfully negotiated the cars at the back of the pack on the tricky dry, slick racing surface.

On lap 14, Anthony Knierim of Franksville worked up from his seventh starting spot to pass second starter Danny Schlafer of Sussex for second place. However, Schlafer regained the third position on the next lap as the two drivers dueled for the spot for several laps.

As the laps wound down, Fassbender retained a sizable advantage, while Paul Pokorski of West Bend made a late charge to the front passing Knierim for fourth on lap 16 and then Schlafer for third with a low move in turn four on lap 18.

Fassbender cruised to his 18th career MSA A main victory in the non-stop race, followed by Miller in second and Pokorski in third. Knierim posted a career-best fourth-place finish and Schlafer rounded out the top five.

Polesttier Derek Janke of New London gained the initial lead in the 20-lap Late Model A main as sixth starter Tim Buhler worked his way into second place on lap three, followed closely by the fifth starting machine of Cleveland’s Justin Schmidt.

On lap 4, Buhler overtook Janke along the high groove in turn two to gain the top spot for good. After the lone caution flag flew on lap six for the spinning car of Cleveland’s Eric Michaels, Buhler again showed his strength pulling out to a big lead.

Three laps later, seventh starter Jim Schmidt of Cleveland cleared his son Justin for second place and began to run down Buhler. Jim Schmidt, who pulled off a last lap pass to score the A main victory last week, charged to within striking distance in the closing laps. However, it was not quite enough as Buhler claimed his second Late Model A main victory of the season.

Jim Schmidt had to settle for second, Justin Schmidt wound up third, Kyle Odekirk of Plymouth came up from his 10th starting spot to finish fourth in his 2016 racing debut and Janke rounded out the top five.

Outside front row starter Eric Scribner grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap Modified main event. Two laps later, Scribner had built up a half lap cushion over the second place car of third starter Matt Jackson of Sheboygan.

While Scribner raced all by himself at the front of the field, Jackson, Randy Markwardt Jr. of Sheboygan Falls, Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers and Mark Joski of Denmark waged an epic battle for the runner-up spot starting on lap 8.

After a restart following a caution involving Scott Mommaerts of Eagle, Markwardt Jr. bolted around Jackson for second before another caution slowed the pace for the stalled car of Jamie Schmidt of Seymour on the backstretch on lap 13.

In the closing laps it was Mukwanago’s Mark Knurr who put on a show using the high line to move from his ninth starting into four place on lap 19.

Scribner went on to claim his first Modified A main victory of the season at Manitowoc, followed by Markwardt Jr. in second, eighth starter Kyle Kudick in third, Knurr in fourth and Schmidt, who came from the rear of the field to finish fifth.

An eventful 20-lap Sport Mod A main got off to a rough start when polesitter Justin Bauer of Sheboygan Falls spun in turn four while leading. Bauer’s car collected third starter Andrew Meyerhofer of Menasha, who flipped hard. With no place to go, Hunter Parsons of Green Bay and Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc also made violent contact with Meyerhofer’s car forcing a red flag.

All four drivers emerged from the scene with no major injuries. Meyerhofer, Parsons and Schroeder retired from the race, while Bauer was able to return to competition.

When the race returned to green flag action, 12th starter Jeff Steenbergen, who restarted in the third position, powered into the lead in turn four. After another caution for a two-car spin on lap 4, Steenbergen pulled away from the field.

On lap 5, 18th starter Travis Arenz assumed second place and set his sights on Steenbergen. Arenz caught Steenbergen on lap 10 while Brian Bruechert, who restarted the race at the tail of the field following the lap 3 red flag, charged into fifth place.

With Arenz working the low groove and Steenbergen racing up high, the two dueled side by side for several laps before another caution flew on lap 12 for a stalled car.

On the restart, Steenbergen moved down to the low groove to block Arenz’ challenge. Meanwhile Bruechert moved in to challenge the lead duo on lap 15. The fourth and final caution came out on lap 16 for a stalled car.

In the final four laps, Bruechert used the high groove to gain second place briefly, but Arenz quickly regained the spot using the low line.

Steenbergen survived the three-way battle to gain his first Sport Mod A main victory of the 2016 campaign in his first Manitowoc Speedway appearance of the season. Arenz placed second, Bruechert was third, fifth starter John Rothmund of Manitowoc placed fourth and Wyatt Block of Tigertown came from the eighth starting spot to finish fifth.

Polesitter Steven Wirtz led the first three laps of the 20-lap Grand National A main before outside front row starter Kevin Naidl, who was making a rare Manitowoc Speedway appearance, used a low move in turn four to wrestle the lead away from Wirtz on lap 4.

After a pair of caution flags on lap 7, Wirtz dueled with ninth starter Brad Lubach for second place on the restart. Lubach gained the spot one lap later while Wirtz retired to the pit area with apparent mechanical issues.

By lap 11, Lubach closed in to Naidl’s rear bumper. Over the final nine laps. Lubach applied relentless pressure Naidl ducking under the leader on several occasions entering turn three.

However, Naidl refused to back down even as some slight contact was made in the closing laps. Naidl fended off one last challenge from Lubach on the final lap to score his first Manitowoc Speedway Grand National victory of the 2016 season.

Lubach had to settle for second, Ryan Minster of Sheboygan charged from his 14th starting spot to take third, Kodiak Wirtz of Menomonee Falls took fourth after starting 11th and Nick Schumacher of Eagle placed fifth after starting eighth.

In the Sport 4 main event, it was all Shaun Bangart, who moved up from the fifth starting spot to pass third starter Brian Watzka Jr. of Denmark for the lead on lap 2.

Once out front, Bangart pulled away en route to his fifth Sport 4 A main victory of the season at Manitowoc. Eighth starter Mitch Meier of Chilton was second, Watzka Jr. finished third, Neil Watzka of Denmark started and finished fourth and seventh starter Matt DeWilde of Kaukauna placed fifth.

Walker Bergene of Whitelaw was the Thunder Truck winner.

The evening was EWSC Sponsor Appreciation Night at the speedway.

The EWSC races next Friday, Aug. 5 will include racing in the Grand National, Modified, Sport Mod, Street Stock, Sport Four and Thunder Truck divisions. Pink Heals Racing Away Cancer/Badger Brew and Que Night at the races will showcase the Grand National division with driver introductions and a 30-lap Grand National Nationals main event featuring extra pay. The Street Stocks will also be making their second and final appearance at Manitowoc this season. Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing to begin at 7 p.m.

Davis claims Sprint Car A main triumph at Manitowoc Speedway

Davis claims second Sprint Car A main at Manitowoc Speedway

Reinwald, Rothmund, Cullen, Fletcher, Klumb earn main event wins

By Jeff Pederson of Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 15, 2016 – It probably felt a little like déjà vu for Kurt Davis’ fellow competitors in the Midwest Sprint Car Association ranks Friday, July 15, as the veteran West Allis driver started on the pole and raced to his second consecutive 25-lap A main victory in Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car competition at the Manitowoc Speedway.

During the last MSA appearance at Manitowoc on June 24, Davis started on the pole and led every lap en route to a commanding victory. This time it wasn’t quite as by the book for Davis, as he dropped back to third place at the start, before rallying to post his third MSA A main victory of the season and MSA record 51st main event victory of his career.

In the Modified division, Russ Reinwald of Iron Ridge pulled off a late pass to post the victory in the 20-lap A main. Sport Mod rookie John Rothmund of Manitowoc fended off several challengers to record his second A main victory of the season. Jesse James Cullen of Chilton used a late-race charge to earn his initial victory of the 2016 campaign in the Grand National division. Tony Fletcher of Greenleaf notched an impressive flag-to-flag victory in the Sport Four division and Dennis Klumb of Adell notched the victory in the Winged Super Modified A main.

Davis started on the pole with fellow veteran open wheel racer Al Schlafer of Sussex to his outside at the start of the 25-lap Sprint Car A main.

Outside second row starter Tim Haddy of Waupun was the story in the early going as he bolted around both Davis and Schlafer on the opening lap to take the lead on the opening lap. While Davis found himself back in third place, Haddy began to pull away from field.

On lap 4, Derek Siegel spun in turn four to bring out the first caution of the race. Following the restart, Davis began to make his move back to the front. After seizing second place, Davis set his sights on Haddy, who was beginning to work through lapped traffic on lap 9.

On lap 12, Davis pulled off a slide job in heavy lapped traffic to take the lead from Haddy. Meanwhile, fifth starter Brandon McMullen of Plymouth slid past third starter Danny Schlafer of Sussex to take over the third position.

Two laps later, Haddy had reeled Davis back in and appeared to have a shot at regaining the lead entering turn one on lap 21. However, Haddy got caught behind the lapped car of Emily Portschy of Plymouth, which cut off all the momentum he had built up.

On lap 23, Josh Teunissen of Waldo brought out the caution flag, following a spin in turn two to set up a green-white-checked flag finish.

On the single-file restart, Haddy attempted to dive under Davis in turn one. However, Davis powered around Haddy using the preferred high groove on the smooth and racy track surface.

Davis went on to post the victory, followed by Haddy in second, Danny Schlafer in third, McMullen in fourth and 11th starter Wayne Modjeski of Oak Creek rounding out the top five.

The 20-lap Modified A main was hotly contested, as positions were swapped throughout field for the duration of the event with three and four-wide racing for position an oft-viewed sight.

Third starter Troy Jerovetz of Green Bay outdueled front row starters Rob Charapata of Oconto and Josh Lambert of Casco to take the lead on the opening lap. Charapata settled into second place for the time being before Lambert seized the position on lap 3.

Jerovetz continued to set a blistering pace out front in the early going, as Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers, who started sixth, raced himself into the top five on lap 8. Kudick was applying heavy pressure to Lambert when the lone caution flag of the race appeared for the stalled car of Randy Markwardt Jr. of Sheboygan Falls on lap 12.

Kudick worked the bottom of the track to nearly seize the lead from Jerovetz on lap 14. However, a slight bobble allowed Russ Reinwald, who started eighth, to slip past Kudick later before setting his sights on the top spot.

On lap 15, Jerovetz jumped the cushion in turn one on lap 15, which dropped him back to fifth and allowed Reinwald to assume command of the race. Once out front, Reinwald was never headed on the way to the impressive victory.

Kudick finished second, Lambert wound up third, Jerovetz hung on to place fourth and R.M. Van Pay of Denmark finished fifth, after starting seventh.

In the Sport Mod division, rookie John Rothmund of Manitowoc continued to impress as he led all 20 laps from his outside front row starting spot to post his second A main victory of the 2016 season.

As Rothmund held the point, an epic battle was being waged for positions inside the top five among fifth starter Hunter Parsons of Green Bay, Sheboygan’s Travis Arenz, who started eighth, and 10th starter Jason Jach of Shawano, who nearly rode the high groove to the victory.

Jach worked his way into third on lap 8 and seized second from Parsons, after a long side-by-side battle, on lap 12. Jach kept digging along the high line in the closing laps to put himself into position to mount a challenge on the final lap.

However, as Jach tried to sweep past on the outside, his car spun in turn four on the last lap, allowing Rothmund to post the victory in the caution-free race. Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee mounted a huge charge in the final five laps to post a runner-up showing after starting seventh. Parsons was third, Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc came from ninth to finish fourth and Arenz placed fifth.

The 20-lap Grand National A main feature three different leaders and a first-time winner. Outside front row starter Jonathan Otte of Cedar Grove paced the first 10 laps of the race, despite enduring heavy pressure from Steven Wirtz and three caution flags during the first seven laps.

On lap 8, Brad Lubach of Kiel moved in from his seventh starting spot to assume the runner-up spot. Three laps later, Lubach used a high-low crossover move to work his way past Otte, with Cullen following in his tire tracks. Over the next seven laps, the low riding Cullen gradually reeled in the cushion-pounding Lubach before executing the winning pass in turn three on lap 18.

Lubach trailed Cullen to the finish line in second, 10th starter Steven Weber of Plymouth finished third, Wirtz was fourth and Greg Haese of Manitowoc charged up from his 14th starting spot to place fifth.

In the Sport Four main event, outside front row starter Tony Fletcher of Greenleaf held off fifth-starter Shaun Bangart of Chilton to post the A main victory in flag-to-flag fashion.

Bangart placed second, fourth starter Mitch Meier of Chilton was third, Mike Meier of Chilton, who starter third, wound up fourth and polesitter Alvin TeStroete of Hilbert ended up fifth.

Dennis Klumb of Adell won the A main event for the visiting Winged Super Modifieds. He was followed to the line by Bob Brion of Plymouth in second, Keith Anderson of Sheboygan in third and Roy Stern of Hustisford fourth.

Walker Bergene of Whitelaw, who competed in the Sport 4 race, had the only Thunder Truck on hand

The race program, which drew a total of 93 cars in six divisions, was presented by Lakeside Foods, with Coors Light presenting the hard charger awards in each division. Rick’s Auto Doctors also contributed to a coin and candy drop for kids 11 and under.

The EWSC races next Friday, July 22 will feature Back to School night with school supplies for kids with racing in the Late Model, Grand National, Street Stock, Sport Mod, Thunder Truck and Sport Four divisions. Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing to begin at 7 p.m.
