Abreu fends off Kofoid to prevail in Outlaws return
(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 6, 2025 – With a sellout crowd on hand to welcome the return of the NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series to The Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wis. after a 20-year absence, 40-year racing veteran Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee scored a flag-to-flag victory in the 25-lap Akright Auto Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car A main on Friday, June 6.
In the 35-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car headliner, Rico Abreu of St. Helena, Calif. turned back a spirited challenge from Penngrove, Calif. driver Buddy Kofoid in the closing laps to notch his second career A-main victory at The Plymouth Dirt Track.
Two-time PDTR 360 Sprint Car champion Kurt Davis seized the lead of the 25-lap PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main on the opening lap from the pole position with outside front row starter Clayton Rossmann of Wadsworth, Ill. giving chase. On lap 5, Rossmann closed to within striking distance along the far inside line of the well-manicured third-mile clay oval.
On lap 10, Davis caught the rear of the 22-car field and was slicing his way through slower traffic when the first of four caution flags flew on lap 15 after Joseph Hintz contacted the turn two wall.
Rossmann and third starter Chris Clayton of Waldo collided in turn two on the ensuing restart to bring out the second caution flag.
After one lap of green flag action, another caution flag appeared when Scott Grissom of Winthrop Harbor, Ill. spun in turn four.
Following the restart, ninth starter Kevin Karnitz of West Bend rode the outside groove to sweep past fourth starter Tyler Davis of Franklin into second on lap 17. Five laps later, the fourth and final caution flag was displayed when Tyler Davis and Will Gerrits of Waupun made contact in turn three to slow the pace on lap 22.
Following the last restart of the race, Alex Pokorski of West Bend, who started 10th, made a big charge along the cushion to grab third. Meanwhile, Karnitz ran down Davis in the closing laps in a bid to wrestle the lead away.
However, Davis held tight to the low line in the final circuits to secure his first main event victory of the 2025 campaign, 27th PDTR 360 Sprint Car A-main triumph and series-leading 66th Midwest Sprint Car Association main-event win in the non-points event.
The win vaulted Davis into a tie with two-time PDTR 360 Sprint Car Champion Ben Schmidt of Plymouth for second place on the all-time PDTR 360 Sprint Car A-main victory list.
“I have a lot of laps around this place,” Davis said. “I knew running the top of the track wasn’t fast enough to get it done because of the bite I had getting off the corners was too good.”
Karnitz trailed Davis to the finish line by a close two-car length margin. Pokorski wound up third, fifth starter Brandon Berth of Cascade came home fourth and PDTR 360 Sprint Car rookie Tristan Furseth of Cambridge placed fourth after starting seventh.
Rico Abreu, who started second, grabbed the lead from the start of the 35-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car A-main to set up a short, but intense duel with three-time Knoxville Nationals winner and 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, Calif., who started on the pole.
On lap 6, Larson’s night came to an early end with a hard hit against the turn two fence after his machine suffered a broken axle. When the race resumed, 2024 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year Award winner Buddy Kofoid, who started fourth slipped into second.
After the fifth and final caution flag appeared on lap 19, the rest of the race went clean and green as Abreu worked traffic to perfection to build up a full straightaway cushion over Kofoid.
Abreu caught the back of the field as the laps wound down, which allowed Kofoid to take a big bite out of the lead gap. With two laps to go, Kofoid attempted to duck under Abreu in turn three which resulted in slight contact between the two lead cars in turn four.

However, Abreu quickly gathered up his car and pulled away to secure his second career A-main victory at The Plymouth Dirt Track and first since his triumph in the Rayce Rudeen Foundation race with the All-Star Circuit of Champions in 2023.
The win was Abreu’s second of the 2025 World of Outlaws season and 19th overall in WoO competition, which moved him into 33rd on the series’ all-time victory list.
After scoring his eighth victory in his last 15 Sprint Car starts, Abreu, Abreu joined Tim Kaeding (2005) and Joey Saldana (2004) as World of Outlaws A-main winners at The Plymouth Dirt Track.
Kofoid had to settle for second, third starter Tyler Courtney of Indianapolis, Ind. placed third, Carson Macedo finished fourth from the eighth starting spot and five-time World of Outlaws champion Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, Calif placed fifth after starting fifth.
Clayton Rossmann picked up the PDTR 360 Sprint Car fast qualifier award with a lap of 12.924 seconds.
Rico Abreu turned in the fastest lap in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series qualifying in 11.385 seconds.
The 12-lap World of Outlaws Last Chance Showdown win went to Hunter Schuerenberg of Sikeston, Mo.
The fifth event of the 2025 PDTR campaign, sponsored by Hopf Farms, produced a field of 61 Sprint Cars, including 39 World of Outlaws Series 410 Sprint Cars and 22 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars.
