Pokorski Motorsports rock solid in double dip weekend

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 20, 2016 – Coming off of a season-best runner-up showing at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam on Friday, July 8, the Paul Pokorski Motorsports team entered last weekend’s Midwest Sprint Car Association doubleheader at Manitowoc Speedway and the Plymouth Dirt Track with some all-important momentum on its side.

While the team’s A-main results may not have been overly flashy, (6th at Manitowoc, 11th at Plymouth) it was a solid weekend all around for the 24-year veteran West Bend driver and his dedicated crew.

On Friday, July 15, a total of 21 MSA Sprint Cars checked into the pit area at the Manitowoc Speedway for the third of six scheduled appearances at the track, which will be demolished a season’s end to make way for a Meijer store.

Pokorski started sixth in the second Sprint Car heat race and a fast start vaulted him to fourth, after passing Josh Teunissen in turn two. He then bolted by Doug Wondra to grab third place coming out of turn four on the opening lap.

Pokorski then held the third position the rest of the way, finishing behind second place Kurt Davis and heat winner Brandon McMullen.

The 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion drew the sixth starting position in the 25-lap main event.

Pokorski passed Al Schlafer to move into fifth and then maneuvered around Brandon McMullen along the high groove to seize fourth place on lap 4. As the leaders encountered slower traffic on lap 4, McMullen snuck past Pokorski, relegating the 2008 MSA Rookie of the Year to fifth place.

Pokorski maintained fifth place, until the final restart of the race following a caution on lap 23. On the restart, he fell back to seventh, as Wayne Modjeski and Lance Fassbender slipped past. However, he battled back to pass Fassbender at the line to place sixth in the final running order.

“Friday night at Manitowoc was a good night for us,” Pokorski said. “I made a poor choice on the final restart in the A man and that cost us a spot in the end. The car was not as good as the previous visit to Manitowoc with the IRA. I have a couple of theories why and we’ll keep working on it.”

The team then traveled to the Plymouth Dirt Track for PDTR Sprint Car action, which drew a stout field of 30 Sprint Cars.

Pokorski started sixth in the fourth Sprint Car heat race before passing Dick Kaiser on the opening laps to move into fifth place. Pokorski maintained the fifth position on the dry, slick track surface over the final nine laps to finish fifth in the final rundown.

As the final car to qualify for the A main based on passing points during the heat races, Pokorski started 16th in the A main. A good start propelled Pokorski to 12th place on lap 2. After racing closely with Spyder Akright and Ben Schmidt for a few laps, Pokorski passed Spyder Akright to claim the 11th position.

However, Pokorski dropped back to 13th, after a nifty move by Ben Schmidt on lap 13. Moments later Schmidt dropped out after stalling in turn four.

After restarting 13th, Doug Wondra slipped past Pokorski to move the West Bend racer to 14th. However, eight laps later, Pokorski battled back to pass Wondra for 13th.

After a lap 22 caution for a spin involving Brandon McMullen, who had led the race throughout, Pokorski executed a few more passes, advancing to 12th on lap 22 and slipping past Spyder Akright again to finish 11th in the final rundown.

Tim Haddy captured his second EWSC main event triumph, after inheriting the lead following McMullen’s spin in turn four on lap 22. Chris Clayton was second, Donny Goeden claimed third place, followed by Jim Melis and Andrew Westphal placed fifth.

Pokorski indicated that track conditions did not yield much passing in the A main.

“On Saturday night, the track was smooth, but it rubbered up in the A main,” Pokorski said. “That’s never good, especially considering how far back in the pack we started.”

This coming weekend will feature one race at the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, July 23, which will include bonus money up for grabs in the Sprint Car division with the A main paying a cool $1,300 to win.

“I generally don’t get too excited about the money,” Pokorski said. “I’ll only think about it if I’m leading and we get a yellow with two to go. Then I would have time to think about losing it!”

This Saturday also autograph night, which is a favorite event each year for the fan-friendly Pokorski Motorsport team.

“I think every night is for the fans,” Pokorski said. “That is something our team has always believed in and will continue to. We always look forward to seeing all the fans who come to our pit area after the races.”

The Plymouth Dirt Track Racing program is scheduled to being at 6 p.m. Sheboygan County Fair Park is location at 229 Fairview Drive in Plymouth. For more information, visit www.plymouthdtr.com or check out Plymouth Dirt Track Racing on Facebook.

Davis claims Sprint Car A main triumph at Manitowoc Speedway

Davis claims second Sprint Car A main at Manitowoc Speedway

Reinwald, Rothmund, Cullen, Fletcher, Klumb earn main event wins

By Jeff Pederson of Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 15, 2016 – It probably felt a little like déjà vu for Kurt Davis’ fellow competitors in the Midwest Sprint Car Association ranks Friday, July 15, as the veteran West Allis driver started on the pole and raced to his second consecutive 25-lap A main victory in Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car competition at the Manitowoc Speedway.

During the last MSA appearance at Manitowoc on June 24, Davis started on the pole and led every lap en route to a commanding victory. This time it wasn’t quite as by the book for Davis, as he dropped back to third place at the start, before rallying to post his third MSA A main victory of the season and MSA record 51st main event victory of his career.

In the Modified division, Russ Reinwald of Iron Ridge pulled off a late pass to post the victory in the 20-lap A main. Sport Mod rookie John Rothmund of Manitowoc fended off several challengers to record his second A main victory of the season. Jesse James Cullen of Chilton used a late-race charge to earn his initial victory of the 2016 campaign in the Grand National division. Tony Fletcher of Greenleaf notched an impressive flag-to-flag victory in the Sport Four division and Dennis Klumb of Adell notched the victory in the Winged Super Modified A main.

Davis started on the pole with fellow veteran open wheel racer Al Schlafer of Sussex to his outside at the start of the 25-lap Sprint Car A main.

Outside second row starter Tim Haddy of Waupun was the story in the early going as he bolted around both Davis and Schlafer on the opening lap to take the lead on the opening lap. While Davis found himself back in third place, Haddy began to pull away from field.

On lap 4, Derek Siegel spun in turn four to bring out the first caution of the race. Following the restart, Davis began to make his move back to the front. After seizing second place, Davis set his sights on Haddy, who was beginning to work through lapped traffic on lap 9.

On lap 12, Davis pulled off a slide job in heavy lapped traffic to take the lead from Haddy. Meanwhile, fifth starter Brandon McMullen of Plymouth slid past third starter Danny Schlafer of Sussex to take over the third position.

Two laps later, Haddy had reeled Davis back in and appeared to have a shot at regaining the lead entering turn one on lap 21. However, Haddy got caught behind the lapped car of Emily Portschy of Plymouth, which cut off all the momentum he had built up.

On lap 23, Josh Teunissen of Waldo brought out the caution flag, following a spin in turn two to set up a green-white-checked flag finish.

On the single-file restart, Haddy attempted to dive under Davis in turn one. However, Davis powered around Haddy using the preferred high groove on the smooth and racy track surface.

Davis went on to post the victory, followed by Haddy in second, Danny Schlafer in third, McMullen in fourth and 11th starter Wayne Modjeski of Oak Creek rounding out the top five.

The 20-lap Modified A main was hotly contested, as positions were swapped throughout field for the duration of the event with three and four-wide racing for position an oft-viewed sight.

Third starter Troy Jerovetz of Green Bay outdueled front row starters Rob Charapata of Oconto and Josh Lambert of Casco to take the lead on the opening lap. Charapata settled into second place for the time being before Lambert seized the position on lap 3.

Jerovetz continued to set a blistering pace out front in the early going, as Kyle Kudick of Two Rivers, who started sixth, raced himself into the top five on lap 8. Kudick was applying heavy pressure to Lambert when the lone caution flag of the race appeared for the stalled car of Randy Markwardt Jr. of Sheboygan Falls on lap 12.

Kudick worked the bottom of the track to nearly seize the lead from Jerovetz on lap 14. However, a slight bobble allowed Russ Reinwald, who started eighth, to slip past Kudick later before setting his sights on the top spot.

On lap 15, Jerovetz jumped the cushion in turn one on lap 15, which dropped him back to fifth and allowed Reinwald to assume command of the race. Once out front, Reinwald was never headed on the way to the impressive victory.

Kudick finished second, Lambert wound up third, Jerovetz hung on to place fourth and R.M. Van Pay of Denmark finished fifth, after starting seventh.

In the Sport Mod division, rookie John Rothmund of Manitowoc continued to impress as he led all 20 laps from his outside front row starting spot to post his second A main victory of the 2016 season.

As Rothmund held the point, an epic battle was being waged for positions inside the top five among fifth starter Hunter Parsons of Green Bay, Sheboygan’s Travis Arenz, who started eighth, and 10th starter Jason Jach of Shawano, who nearly rode the high groove to the victory.

Jach worked his way into third on lap 8 and seized second from Parsons, after a long side-by-side battle, on lap 12. Jach kept digging along the high line in the closing laps to put himself into position to mount a challenge on the final lap.

However, as Jach tried to sweep past on the outside, his car spun in turn four on the last lap, allowing Rothmund to post the victory in the caution-free race. Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee mounted a huge charge in the final five laps to post a runner-up showing after starting seventh. Parsons was third, Cody Schroeder of Manitowoc came from ninth to finish fourth and Arenz placed fifth.

The 20-lap Grand National A main feature three different leaders and a first-time winner. Outside front row starter Jonathan Otte of Cedar Grove paced the first 10 laps of the race, despite enduring heavy pressure from Steven Wirtz and three caution flags during the first seven laps.

On lap 8, Brad Lubach of Kiel moved in from his seventh starting spot to assume the runner-up spot. Three laps later, Lubach used a high-low crossover move to work his way past Otte, with Cullen following in his tire tracks. Over the next seven laps, the low riding Cullen gradually reeled in the cushion-pounding Lubach before executing the winning pass in turn three on lap 18.

Lubach trailed Cullen to the finish line in second, 10th starter Steven Weber of Plymouth finished third, Wirtz was fourth and Greg Haese of Manitowoc charged up from his 14th starting spot to place fifth.

In the Sport Four main event, outside front row starter Tony Fletcher of Greenleaf held off fifth-starter Shaun Bangart of Chilton to post the A main victory in flag-to-flag fashion.

Bangart placed second, fourth starter Mitch Meier of Chilton was third, Mike Meier of Chilton, who starter third, wound up fourth and polesitter Alvin TeStroete of Hilbert ended up fifth.

Dennis Klumb of Adell won the A main event for the visiting Winged Super Modifieds. He was followed to the line by Bob Brion of Plymouth in second, Keith Anderson of Sheboygan in third and Roy Stern of Hustisford fourth.

Walker Bergene of Whitelaw, who competed in the Sport 4 race, had the only Thunder Truck on hand

The race program, which drew a total of 93 cars in six divisions, was presented by Lakeside Foods, with Coors Light presenting the hard charger awards in each division. Rick’s Auto Doctors also contributed to a coin and candy drop for kids 11 and under.

The EWSC races next Friday, July 22 will feature Back to School night with school supplies for kids with racing in the Late Model, Grand National, Street Stock, Sport Mod, Thunder Truck and Sport Four divisions. Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing to begin at 7 p.m.

Pokorski Motorsports tallies runner-up showing at Dodge County

Pokorski Motorsports tallies runner-up showing at Dodge County

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 12, 2016 – Six days after his car went up in flames with a header gasket failure while leading the A main at Plymouth, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team tossed any lingering disappointment aside and broke through with a season-best second-place finish in Midwest Sprint Car Association A main competition at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway in Beaver Dam Friday, July 8.

A total of 17 MSA 360 Sprint Cars signed in to take part in the first of three 2016 appearances at the giant, high-speed Dodge County Fairgrounds “Horsepower Half Mile,” in a companion event with the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series.

Pokorski drew the fourth starting position in the first MSA heat race. On the drop of the green flag, the West Bend driver slipped into third place before hitting the cushion hard, which allowed Donny Goeden to seize third.

Pokorski held down the fourth place spot for the remainder of the 8-lap race, closing slightly on the third place car of Chris Clayton over the final two laps.  Lance Fassbender took the checkered flag in the first MSA heat race followed by Goeden in second.

The fourth place run in the first heat race put Pokorski on the inside of the second row to start the 20-lap A main event. On the opening lap, Pokorski held the fourth spot before Kurt Davis slipped past to push the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion back to fifth in the running order.

On lap 3, Pokorski got caught in the treacherous cushion, which allowed Danny Schlafer, Donny Goeden and Tim Haddy to move past. The miscue relegated Pokorski to eighth for the time being.

Three laps later, the first caution of the race appeared for a spin involving Lance Fassbender and Tony Wondra in turn four. On the restart, Donny Goeden and Tim Haddy made contact along the frontstretch, sending Haddy into the wall and Goeden flipping.

With Goeden and Haddy out of the race, Pokorski restarted the race sixth. Following the restart, Pokorski found his groove as he shot past Andrew Westphal with a low move in turn two before bolting past Chris Clayton in turn three to grab the fourth position.

The fourth and final caution flag came out on lap 12 when Kurt Davis lost a tire in turn one. Pokorski lined up for the restart third on the outside of the second place car of Danny Schlafer. When the race went green, Pokorski powered past Schlafer along the high groove to secure the runner-up spot.

Pokorski pulled away from Schlafer over the final eight laps, but he was unable to make a much of a dent on the lead held by Brandon McMullen, who went on to win the race in flag to flag fashion from the pole.

Pokorski, who charged from 18th to finish fourth in the team’s most recent appearance at Dodge County last September, was pleased with the second place effort.

“Things went very well for us throughout the night at Dodge County,” Pokorski said. “The car wasn’t quite as good as the last time we were there, but we were trying something different again, and it’s a different car.

“Dodge County is so different that anything else we run and because of the speed the car does goofy things,” he said. “Needless to say we were happy with the result.”

This Friday, July 15 will see the Pokorski Motorsports team return to the Manitowoc Speedway for the fifth of eight scheduled races at the team’s home track this season.

Pokorski is hoping to build on the speed combination the team found while competing in the Harbor Town Showdown with the IRA 410 series on July 1.

“We will definitely be running the same thing we had with the IRA on July 1st,” Pokorski said. “We’re looking forward to it for sure.”

Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car racing action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. this Friday, July 15 at the Manitowoc Speedway, which is located at 4921 Expo Drive in Manitowoc. For more information, visit www.manitowocspeedway.com

After taking last Saturday off to attend a family wedding, the team will return to The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, July 16.

Promising night headed off for Pokorski Motorsports

Promising night headed off for Pokorski Motorsports

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 5, 2016 – For the second weekend in a row, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team did the double by entering back-to-back events at Manitowoc Speedway and The Plymouth Dirt Track Friday, July1 and Saturday, July 2.

On Friday night, Pokorski Motorsports took part in the final ever 410 Sprint Car race Manitowoc Speedway, as the Interstate Racing Association (IRA) Sprint Car Series rolled into town for the second and final Harbor Town Showdown.

Pokorski, who is a Manitowoc native, was the lone 360 Sprint Car entered in the 27-car IRA field at the Manitowoc Speedway, which will be demolished at the end of the season to make way for a grocery store. However, Pokorski held his own against the high-horsepower competition throughout the night.

After qualifying 25th, Pokorski started ninth and finished ninth in the first IRA heat race of the evening. Due to attrition during hot laps, qualifying and heat race action, Pokorski took the green flag for the 30-lap IRA A main event from the 24th starting position.

Pokorski got off to a strong start in the opening laps as he used the high groove to pass Scott Uttech on lap 1 and pressured Russel Borland for position on lap 2. The West Bend racer nearly got past Johnny Fahl along the low line on lap 5 before race leader Brandon Wimmer swept past to put the familiar blue No. 4 Maxim one lap down.

On lap 9, the first yellow flag of the event appeared when Kris Spitz stopped on the track. On the restart, Pokorski started directly behind the leaders in the running order with Uttech one spot back.

After another caution for Mike Reinke’s spin on lap 13, Uttech snuck past Pokorski on lap 19. Pokorski held solid over the final 11 laps to post a respectable 19th place finish.

“Friday night was great,” Pokorski said. “We tried some different set-up ideas that really seemed to work well. We were as competitive as we could expect to be against the IRA cars.”

On Saturday night, the team returned to The Plymouth Dirt Track for PDTR Sprint Car action, which drew a stout field of 32 Sprint Cars.

Pokorski started third and placed second behind Spyder Akright in the fourth Sprint Car heat race to earn a spot in the 22-car A main field.

What looked to be a banner night, turned quickly into disappointment for team in the A main.

Pokorski rolled off third in the scheduled 25-lap Sprint Car A main and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the early going. After working past polesitter Anthony Knierum on lap 3, Pokorski set sail for leader Al Schlafer, who had separated himself from the rest of the field from his outside front row starting spot.

Pokorski closed the gap quickly before diving low on lap 9 to slip underneath Schlafer along the frontstretch. However, seconds later Schlafer made contact with the lapped car of Nich Melis in turn one, which sent Schlafer flipping to bring out a red flag.

Set to restart in the lead, disaster struck for Pokorski when the cars were pushed off under caution. A header gasket failure caused a fire to erupt on the right side of the engine of Pokorski’s machine. He pulled the car into the infield and was able to exit the car unscathed. However, his bid for victory had vanished in the flames.

Left to watch the remainder of the race from the infield, Pokorski was credited with a 21st place finish in the shortened 17-lap race, which ended early due to the 25-minute time limit with Tim Haddy notching the victory.

“Saturday night was going well right up until the restart of the A main,” Pokorski said. “I could hear the exhaust leak as soon as we pushed off for the feature, but obviously had no idea how bad it was. The fire damaged the hood, some plug wires, gauges and the air cleaner.”

While the fire looked scary to spectators, Pokorski downplayed the severity of the incident.

“I’ve had a few flash fires before, and this one really wasn’t too bad either,” Pokorski said. “Luckily, I was out of the car in plenty of time.”

This Friday night July 8, the Pokorski Motorsports team will compete in a Midwest Sprint Car Association Sprint Car event at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway in Beaver Dam. However, the team will not be in action on Saturday night at The Plymouth Dirt Track.

“We will be ready for Friday night and are looking forward to going to Dodge County,” Pokorski said. “Saturday my niece is getting married, so we will not be at Plymouth. I’ll be praying for rain!”

Pokorski Motorsports posts pair of top 10s

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 28, 2016 – Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team entered a pair of Midwest Sprint Car Association events last weekend and came away with a pair of top ten A main showings at Manitowoc Speedway and The Plymouth Dirt Track Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25.

On Friday, June 24 the team traveled to Manitowoc Speedway, which is a track close to Pokorski’s heart. The event drew 23 MSA Sprint Cars to the third-mile Manitowoc track, which is set to close at the end of the 2016 racing season in favor of new business development.

Pokorski, who grew up in Manitowoc, got the evening off to a rousing start with a victory in the first Sprint Car heat race. The familiar blue Pokorski Motorsports 2016 Maxim started on the pole and paced every lap of the heat race to lead runner-up Tony Wondra to the finish line by a half straightaway margin.

The heat race victory gave Pokorski the eighth starting spot in the 25-lap Sprint Car A main. After the drop of the green flag, Pokorski found himself locked in a battle for seventh place with Tony Wondra, as Pokorski worked the high groove, while Wondra stayed glued to the bottom of the perfectly manicured track surface.

On lap 10, Justin Miller moved up to challenge Pokorski for the seventh spot. As Miller worked the low groove, Pokorski continued to pound the cushion on the outside of the track. Pokorski eventually cleared Miller and set his sights on Kenjay Fiedler, who was running sixth.

On lap 20, Pokorski used a strong outside move in turn four to take over sixth in the running order. As action heated up over the final five laps, Pokorski dueled with Brandon McMullen for the sixth spot. Eventually, McMullen used the inside lane to pull ahead of the high riding Pokorski, who crossed the finish line in seventh place. Kurt Davis of West Allis went on to post the A main victory from his outside front row starting spot in flag-to-flag fashion.

On Saturday night at The Plymouth Dirt Track, a total of 24 MSA checked into the pit area to do battle. Pokorski started the evening with a solid third place finish after starting fifth in the third Sprint Car heat race. Pokorski followed runner-up Scott Conger and race winner Jim Melis to the finish line in the heat race.

Things got quite wild in the 25-lap Sprint Car main event. After starting eighth, Pokorski was involved in a multi-car pileup on the opening lap of the event when front row starters Kurt Davis and Dannon Tessmer got together in turn two.

During the melee, Pokorski was hit from behind by Jim Melis and the contact resulted in a flat left rear tire and bent shock pin. After retreating to the pit area for repairs during the caution period, Pokorski returned to the track to restart the race in the 16th position.

“Apparently Dannon Tessmer’s throttle stuck and he and Kurt Davis got together,” Pokorski Motorsports Crew Chief Dave Schultz said. “Paul slowed to avoid, but Jim Melis had nowhere to go and got into us. It was a racing deal and totally not intentional, unlike the incident we had last week.”

Pokorski moved of steadily through the field throughout the race to find himself firmly in the top 10 and battling for a top 5 finish as the laps wound down.

Pokorski dueled with Scott Conger and Chris Clayton in the closing laps to eventually salvage a solid sixth place showing. Meanwhile, at the front of the pack Donny Goeden posted his third Plymouth Dirt Track Racing Sprint Car A main victory of the season.

“The car was very good and Paul drove his heart out as he always does to finish sixth,” Schultz said. “It was disappointing that we didn’t get the finish that Paul and car deserved, but we had to play the cards that were dealt to us.”

Pokorski was fairly happy with the performance of the car on both nights.

“Both nights were pretty good,” Pokorski said. “The end result in the features was a seventh and sixth-place finish, which isn’t quite what we wanted. However, the car felt good and we were competitive.”

This weekend the Pokorski Motorsports team will again pull a doubleheader at Manitowoc Speedway on Friday night and The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday night.

On Friday night, Pokorski will join the field for the second and final Harbor Town Showdown featuring the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series at Manitowoc Speedway. The race will mark the final 410 Sprint Car race ever at the Manitowoc track. Qualifying is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow at 7 p.m. Manitowoc Speedway is located at 4921 Expo Drive in Manitowoc. For more information, visit www.manitowocspeedway.com

“This upcoming week, we are looking forward to another opportunity to run at Manitowoc,” Pokorski said. “My most memorable race night at Manitowoc was actually in Randy Sippel’s Rent-A-Ride car the first time I drove an MSA car. There was a huge field of cars and we were running fourth in the A man before an engine gremlin knocked us out with about two to go.

“I have a lot of other smaller good memories and some bad memories of racing in Manitowoc,” he said. “We look forward to taking this opportunity to make a few more laps and create a few more memories before the track goes away.”

Then on Saturday night, the Pokorski Motorsports team will return to The Plymouth Dirt Track for another Plymouth Dirt Track Racing weekly event. Racing is scheduled to being at 6 p.m. Sheboygan County Fair Park is location at 229 Fairview Drive in Plymouth. (PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 22, 2016 – After encountering several challenges in adjusting to the nuances of a brand new car through the first seven races of the 2016 season, the Paul Pokorski Motorsports team came into Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action last Saturday at Sheboygan County Fair Park with high hopes for a strong performance.

The evening featured a pit area packed with a total of 64 Sprint Cars, as the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series made its first of three scheduled appearances at The Plymouth Dirt Track this season.

With 29 PDTR Sprint Cars on hand, Pokorski started third in the third PDTR Sprint Car heat race. On the opening lap of the race, Pokorski slipped underneath front row starter Doug Wondra with a low move in turn two.

Pokorski then settled into the runner-up spot behind race leader Chris Clayton. The 24-year veteran West Bend racer held strong in the second position, while Clayton maintained a comfortable lead throughout the 10-lap heat race. Pokorski went on to cross the finish line in second place, a half straightaway behind race winner Clayton to lock himself into the 25-lap A main event.

After starting ninth in the 22-car A main event, Pokorski found himself battling with Robbie Pribnow for ninth place in the opening laps of the race. As Pokorski worked the low groove, Pribnow followed closely behind.

The spirited duel between Pokorski and Pribnow continued in very close quarters for several laps with contact made on a couple of occasions.  On lap 10, the battle came to a head when Pribnow collided with Pokorski in turn three, causing Pokorski to spin to a stop to bring out a caution flag.

Due to the nature of the contact, officials elected to send both Pokorski and Pribnow to the rear of the field on the restart.

When the race resumed, Pokorski moved up to the outside groove in an attempt to work his way up from 19th place. Pokorski managed to move past three cars in the closing laps to bring his 2016 Maxim home in the 16th position.

“I thought the car was really good in hot laps and pretty good in the heat race,” Pokorski said. “I thought the car was alright in the feature and we were holding our own until we got spun out. That’s about all I have to say on that.”

After encountering challenging track conditions on several occasions at Plymouth this season, Pokorski was pleased with the evening’s multi-groove racing surface.

“I thought the track on Saturday night was the best it’s been in a very long time,” Pokorski said. “I hope they can replicate it in the nights to come.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend Midwest Sprint Car Association doubleheader at Manitowoc Speedway and The Plymouth Dirt Track, Pokorski is eager to get back to Manitowoc. During the last MSA main event at Manitowoc on June 3, Pokorski was in the mix for the A main victory, before eventually posting a season-best fourth place finish.

“I can’t wait to go to Manitowoc,” Pokorski said. “The last time we were there the racing was incredible and the track prep was perfect.”

Pokorski Motorsports endures strange night at Plymouth

Pokorski Motorsports endures strange night at Plymouth

By Jeff Pederson

Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 15, 2016 – On a night filled with a number of unusual occurrences, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports experienced a roller coaster ride of ups and downs in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action at Sheboygan County Fair Park on Saturday, June 11.

A total of 29 PDTR Sprint Cars checked into the pit area to do battle for the fourth time this year at The Plymouth Dirt Track.  After the evening’s race program was delayed 1 hour and 45 minutes to accommodate extended track maintenance work, Pokorski found himself on the pole of the first Sprint Car heat race.

Pokorski out powered outside front row starter Danny Schlafer to take the lead at the drop of the green flag. With track conditions very much on the wet, narrow and choppy side, Pokorski stuck to the inside lane while Schlafer followed closely in his tire tracks.

By lap 8, Pokorski had built up a solid half straightaway cushion over Schlafer. However, on the white flag lap Pokorski bobbled slightly in turn two, which allowed Schlafer to close dramatically. Coming to the checkered flag, Schlafer pulled underneath Pokorski in turn four. The two former Midwest Sprint Car Association series champions dueled side by side to the flag stand with Pokorski holding on to post his second heat race victory of the season by mere inches.

“We tried some new things for Saturday night, and the car seemed to work pretty well in the heat, but the track was so abnormal it was hard to tell if we made any real gains,” Pokorski said. “Nonetheless, I’m happy we won.

After several major incidents and accident cleanup delays pushed the program near the 11 p.m. citywide curfew, the scheduled 20-lap Sprint Car A main rolled onto track as the final event of the evening with Pokorski starting in the 10th position.

During the opening laps on the lightning fast, narrow and uneven track surface, Pokorski battled with Donny Goeden and Kurt Davis for the 10th position. After a restart following a caution on lap 5, Pokorski made contact with the cars of Kevin Karnitz and Justin Miller as several cars got bunched up in turn one, which resulted in front axle damage. Pokorski fell back to the rear of the field before pitting when the next caution came out on lap 8.

One lap later, the race was halted for good when Shane Wenninger flipped hard in turn 4 as the 11 p.m. curfew expired. It took a considerable amount of time to extricate Wenninger from the car. He was transported to a local hospital and found to have suffered two fracture vertebrae in the accident. Because the race did not go past the half way mark, points and pay were distributed evenly through the field.

“In the feature it again was hard to tell if the car was really working well,” Pokorski said. “It seemed like we were all just trying to stay off each other on the narrow track. We had some minor damage that will take a few hours to fix, but nothing we haven’t dealt with before and certainly part of the racing deal.”

Despite the challenging track conditions encountered by PDTR competitors in recent weeks at Plymouth, Pokorski has high hopes for this Saturday’s Interstate Racing Association/Midwest Sprint Car Association Sprint Car doubleheader at The Plymouth Dirt Track.

“I’m confident the track crew will get things worked out,” Pokorski said. “I’m really looking forward to the MSA/IRA doubleheader this Saturday night.”

Fit For You No. 7

Significance of METs and Watts

by Scott Rejholec

Have you ever been on a piece of exercise equipment, and the screen is showing your METS and Watts, but you have no idea what they are?

Well, this article will cover the significance of both of these measurements.

METs stand for metabolic equivalence. A MET is used to determine the rate at which the body consumes oxygen and produces energy relative to your body weight.

1 MET=rest. For example, if you are doing an activity at 3 METs your body is working three times harder than at rest, because it is requiring more oxygen.

Why are METS important? METs measure the energy cost of physical activity.

For instance, something that requires 1-3 METs is considered light activity, 3-7 is moderate, and 7 and above is vigorous. They provide a method of describing exercise tolerance of an individual.

The next time you are on the treadmill or bike, take a note of what your METs are and compare them to the list of activities below that correlate to the energy expenditure.

1-3 METs: Card playing, darts, dusting, shopping, walking 2 mph, and washing dishes.

3-5 METs: Raking leaves, square dancing, walking 3-4 mph, and weeding.

5-7 METs: Pushing a lawn mower, sexual intercourse, shoveling dirt, tennis and walking 4-5 mph.

7-9 METs: Carrying 20 pounds upstairs, jogging 5 mph, kayaking, snowshoeing and swimming.

More than 9 METs: Cross-country skiing, running faster than 6 mph and shoveling heavy snow.

So what is Watts? I’m sure if you’ve ever had to change a light bulb you have had to look at how many Watts the bulb uses. Watts are a measure of power.

On that piece of equipment, Watts measure the power that you are producing while exercising. The higher your output, the higher your MET level.

For example, an average light bulb requires 60 Watts of energy. If you can maintain 60 Watts on a piece of equipment, you would be able to power a light bulb.

Here is an interesting fact, there are 746 Watts in one horsepower.

What are some ways to increase Watts? Watts are measured from the level of resistance and RPMs (Revolutions per Minute). Increasing one of the two, or both, will increase your Watts.

I hope this could bring some light into the numbers on the screen, and that you can apply those numbers now.

If you’ve hit a plateau, or your workouts are becoming stale, try focusing on those numbers to challenge yourself!

If you have any questions, comments or want to see a specific topic be presented in these articles, please feel free to follow “Fit For You Sheboygan Falls” on Facebook, as I will be posting my articles, videos and other health related topics on there.

As always, make it a great day!

Pokorski Motorsports Bounces Back at Manitowoc

Pokorski Motorsports bounces back at Manitowoc

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 7, 2016 – Following a disappointing showing over the Memorial Day weekend, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports Sprint Car racing team were aiming to get back on the competitive track Friday, June 3, in the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car season opener at the Manitowoc Speedway.

With 24 Sprint Cars on hand, Pokorski opened the evening by starting second in the first Sprint Car heat race next to polesitter Tony Wondra. On the drop of the green flag, inside second row starter Brandon McMullen bolted past Pokorski to take over second place.

As the field stretched out over the third-mile oval, Pokorski settled into third place, which is where he finished behind McMullen and Wondra, who posted the heat race victory.

Just as he did in the heat race, Pokorski lined up for the 25-lap Sprint Car A main on the outside of the front row next to polesitter Tim Haddy. After the initial start was waved off due to the spinning car of rookie Tyler Brabant in turn two, Haddy used the high groove to grab the lead on the drop of the green flag.

In the opening laps, Pokorski tucked in behind Haddy along the preferred high line. By lap 5 the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic. On lap 6, Pokorski moved up next to Haddy, who was attempting to pass a slower car on the low side of the track. Just as Pokorski looked poised to assume the top spot in the running order, Josh Teunissen spun his machine in turn four just in front of the leaders.

After a wild restart, Pokorski found himself shuffled back to fourth place, as outside second row starter Kenjay Fiedler and 13th starter Kurt Davis slipped past to assume second and third place respectively on lap 7.

Pokorski battled back along the outside groove to pull even with Davis on several occasions over the next five laps. After Davis pulled away in lapped traffic to clear Fiedler for second place, Pokorski used a perfectly timed slide job to get by Fiedler for third place on lap 19.

As the laps wound down, 12th starter Danny Schlafer pressured Pokorski for third place before seizing the position in turn four on lap 24.

With one lap to go, a yellow flag for Lance Fassbender’s spin in turn two, tightened the field for a mad one-lap dash to the finish. After a frenzied restart, Pokorski held on to take fourth place behind race winner Haddy, Davis and Schlafer.

After failing to qualify for the Sprint Car A main one week earlier at Plymouth, Pokorski and his crew made some adjustments to the team’s new 2016 Maxim, which paid significant dividends at Manitowoc.

“We did make some changes to the car from the week before,” Pokorski said. “We also made some changes during the night that seemed to be in the right direction. We seem to be making some gains on this new car and we have a few more things to try yet.”

While happy with his season-best fourth place finish, Pokorski felt he had a car capable of winning if the caution flags had worked in his favor.

“I thought we had a shot at winning, but we would have needed a little luck with the cautions falling different to make that happen,” Pokorski said.

A scheduled Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) doubleheader weekend was washed out the following night, Saturday, June 4, when heavy rain forced the cancellation of the Plymouth Dirt Track program for the third time this season.

The team will return to action this Saturday, June 11 at the Plymouth Dirt Track.

Fit For You – A quick way to lose five pounds No. 6

Fit For You – A quick way to love five pounds No. 6

by Scott Rejholec

With summer right around the corner, many people are scrambling to lose that extra 5 pounds.

If you exercise or not, there’s an easy way to do it, but are you mentally there?

So what’s the easy way to lose that five pounds? Well, it’s cutting out the added sugars. Ah yes, the sugars. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but heck, its true!

What are examples of the sugars to cut out, and why? The obvious is soda, energy drinks, candy, cookies and ice cream.

But the not so obvious is fruit juice.

Let’s get into the why you should cut out the sugars. Sugar is a form of carbohydrate, and is quickly available for energy.

When consumed, blood sugar (glucose) levels spike, which in turn causes insulin levels to rise.

Insulin is a hormone released by your body that moves glucose from the bloodstream into the cells for use as fuel. If sugar is not quickly utilized for energy it gets stored into body fat through a process known as lipogenesis.

What’s the reason behind juice? Fruit is good for you, yes. However, 90 percent of the juices sold in stores are not real juice.

Without the whole fruit, juice doesn’t have the same amount of fiber, even if it is “made with real fruit.”

Without the fiber, juice has the same effect of a soda in regards to spiking your blood sugar. If you really want juice, buy fruit and take the time to juice it.

Lastly, let’s talk about diet sodas. Plain and simple, they are not good for you. Actually they’re worse than regular soda. The reason they are “zero” calories is because they are made up of artificial sugars that your body does not know how to break down. At the same time, it has the same effect of spiking your blood sugar.

By cutting out added sugars, I guarantee you will see that five pounds gone within two weeks.

I know for some this is going to be really hard, but as mentioned in previous articles, write down your goal and put it somewhere you see it every day.

Let it be a reminder to you of why you want to achieve that goal. Whether you find motivation in looking or feeling better for yourself, living longer with your spouse, or seeing your kids and grandkids grow up, stop making excuses and do it.

If you have any questions, comments, or want to see a specific topic be presented in these articles, please feel free to follow “Fit For You Sheboygan Falls” on Facebook as I will be posting my articles, videos and other health related topics on there.

Pokorski Motorsports looks ahead to MSA doubleheader

Pokorski Motorsports endures forgettable weekend

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 1, 2016 – A holiday weekend Sprint Car racing doubleheader at the Plymouth Dirt Track and 141 Speedway turned out to be one that Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team would like to put in the rearview mirror as quickly as possible.

After recording a pair of top 10 finishes in the first two events of the 2016 season at The Plymouth Dirt Track, the blue Pokorski Motorsports No. 4 Sprint Car failed to qualify for the A main on Saturday, May 28.

Highly challenging track conditions proved to confound each of the 33 sprint car teams in the pit area, as a dry slick track for the heat races yielded to a very rough track surface for B and A main competition later in the evening.

Pokorski started fourth the third Sprint Car heat race in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action on Saturday night. On lap 2, contact with Wayne Modjeski’s car, dropped Pokorski back to fifth place in the running order.

Two laps later, Pokorski attempted to move to the high groove in an effort to make up some ground and earn a spot in the A main. However, the extremely dry slick track conditions produced almost exclusively single-file racing along the low groove. Pokorski fell back to seventh on lap five and held on to that position at the finish line.

The seventh-place finish in the heat race put Pokorski in the first of two B main events, where he started seventh. Needing to finish third or better in order to transfer to the A main, Pokorski attempted to use the high groove to gain the positions he needed.

However, a spin in turn three halted Pokorski’s progress in the early going. After restarting seventh, Pokorski worked past Doug Pietz and Nich Melis in the closing laps to place fifth, two spots out of a transfer position.

“It was definitely one of the toughest nights we’ve had,” Pokorski Motorsports Crew Chief Dave Schultz said. “The track was very difficult, which kept us guessing. We were down on crew help too on Saturday night, which added to the challenges. The bottom line is, as the crew chief I just didn’t give Paul the car he needed to be successful.”

Things didn’t turn out any better for the team on Sunday, May 29, as it competed with the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

Pokorski qualified 27th in the 28-car IRA field, before starting and finishing ninth in the third IRA heat race.

In the B main, Pokorski lined up in the ninth starting spot. Pokorski out dragged Chris Clayton to maintain the ninth-place position in the early going. On lap 3, Pokorski spun his machine in turn 4.

After restarting at the back of the field, Pokorski waged a spirited battle with Clayton for ninth place. On lap 9, Clayton surged ahead as Pokorski held on to place 10th, four spots out of a transfer position to the A main.

“The weekend stunk,” Pokorski said. “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug! But we won’t give up and we’re going to try some different things for this weekend at Manitowoc and probably at Plymouth also. We are hoping for much better results.”

A doubleheader weekend is on tap for Pokorski Motorsports team with the first of six scheduled MSA appearances at the Manitowoc Speedway on Friday, June 3. The following night, the Pokorski Motorsports team will return to the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, June 4.

Pokorski Motorsports would like to direct special recognition to R&H Enterprises, Goeden’s Auto Body, Christel Signs and Goodwin Racing Engines for helping to get the team’s new 2016 Maxim on the track this season.

Late charge nets top-10 finish at Plymouth Dirt Track

Late charge nets top-10 finish for Pokorski Motorsports

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 24, 2016 – Coming off a weekend in which uncooperative weather kept the Paul Pokorski Motorsports No. 4 sprint car sitting idle in shop, the team was anxious to get back to the track for the second night of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action at Sheboygan County Fair Park in Plymouth Saturday, May 21.

Beautiful weather greeted drivers, crews, workers and fans, as a stout field of 32 PDTR sprint cars filled the pits to do battle on the venerable one-third mile clay oval track.

Pokorski started the second 10-lap sprint car heat race on the outside of the front row, next to polesitter Spyder Akright. On the drop of the green flag, Akright got the jump to take the lead into the first turn.

As Akright raced through the middle lane of the racing surface at the front of the field, Pokorski settled into second place and began to search for a line to get past the leader.

By lap 4, two-time defending PDTR sprint car champion Donny Goeden moved up to challenge Pokorski and Akright. On lap 5, Goeden moved underneath Pokorski and then slid past Akright to take the lead. Pokorski held on over the final five laps to finish third behind Akright and Goeden.

“We tried some things in the heat race and we learned a lot,” Pokorski Motorsports Crew Chief Dave Schultz said. “The finish wasn’t really what we were looking for, but we found out some things that seemed to help once we got going toward the end of the A-main.”

The Pokorski Motorsports machine started the 25-lap main event from the 14th started spot. In the early going, Pokorski held his own inside the top 15 as drivers began to seek out the fastest lane to run.

On lap 8, Pokorski spun out in turn four while running in the 16th spot. Anthony Knierim clipped the front end of Pokorski’s car during the incident, resulting in some front end damage to the nose wing.

“I just messed up,” Pokorski said. “I got on the gas too hard and too early and lost it. We had some damage to the brackets on the bumper and the nose wing, but it wasn’t too bad.”

With mainly cosmetic damage to the front end, Pokorski continued on, restarting the race in the 20th position.

Following the restart, Pokorski started to find success running along the high groove. By lap 12, Pokorski had moved to 15th and one lap later he cleared three more cars to take the 12th spot.

With the majority of the field running low, Pokorski had basically a clear lane to run at the top of the speedway, which he utilized to his benefit.

On lap 16, Pokorski found himself dueling with Kenjay Fiedler and Chris Clayton for the ninth and 10th positions.

After engaging in a spirited back-and-forth, side-by-side battle with Fiedler for seven laps, Pokorski surged ahead to claim ninth place for good on lap 23.

While Pokorski capped a strong rally to finish ninth place, Donny Goeden surged to his second A-main victory of the season and the 17th of his career to vault to the top of the all-time PDTR sprint car A-main victory list.

“Our plan was to run the bottom in the A main because we thought everybody would be running the top,” Pokorski said. “The car felt pretty good on the bottom before the spin. Once we went to the back, I had to change the plan because everyone was running the bottom.

“I had to go where they weren’t, so I ran the top for the last 17 laps and it worked pretty well as we got some spots back,” he said. “We were a little too tight to run the top, but I can’t complain with how it turned out at the end. Coming from 20th to ninth in the last part of the race isn’t too bad. If I wouldn’t have messed up and had that spin, I think we could’ve had a really nice finish.”

A doubleheader weekend is on tap for Pokorski Motorsports team with Plymouth Dirt Track Racing on the schedule for this Saturday, May 28. The Saturday night PDTR program will be presented by Pokorski Motorsports sponsor Pedal Down Promotions.

Then on Sunday, May 29, the team is planning to compete with the Interstate Racing Association (IRA) 410 sprint car series at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

Pokorski Motorsports would like to direct special recognition to R&H Enterprises, Goeden’s Auto Body, Christel Sign and Goodwin Racing Engines for helping to get the team’s new 2016 Maxim on the track this season.

Fit For You – Aerobic Exercise No. 5

Fit For You – No. 5

Aerobic Exercise

by Scott Rejholec

In the last article we discussed the anaerobic fuel system – a short, intense exercise that lasts from 6 seconds to 3 minutes.

If you recall, that system uses your stored carbohydrate source, glycogen, as its fuel to produce energy, adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Today we will be going over when, and how your body uses oxygen to produce ATP.

First, we need to understand that by no means are you only using one fuel system at a time. The two are always working in combination with each other.

However, depending on your intensity and duration of exercise, one fuel system will be the main provider of the ATP.

So when is our body mainly utilizing the aerobic system to provide ATP?

The answer is at rest, and during prolonged, submaximal, steady-state work. As mentioned before, our bodies are never using only one fuel system.

To get into how our bodies make energy using oxygen, it actually starts with a byproduct of glycolysis (anaerobic method of creating ATP) called pyruvate.

Without getting into too much detail, the pyruvate is transported to the mitochondria of our cells, where it enters the Krebs cycle.

This cycle is a series of reactions that continues the oxidization of pyruvate. Next, hydrogen atoms enter the Electric Transport Chain (ETC) to produce a net of 34 ATP.

If you are more interested in the specifics, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) has a lot of great information on the physiology.

It has been shown that if an individual sustains an appropriate heart rate while preforming aerobic activities, our bodies will utilize 70 percent of its fuel from stored fats, in the form of triglycerides, and 30 percent from stored carbohydrates, glycogen.

Being more efficient at burning stored fat is the most effective method of losing weight, in terms of exercise. The key is to stay at a specific intensity, and the question is then, what is my target heart rate?

An individual can find their ideal heart rate by finding their Target Heart Range (THR). THR is 50-85 percent of an individual’s heart rate max.

The first step in finding your THR is to take 220 minus your age. Then multiply that by .5 and .85 to find your range.

For instance, I am 26. 220 minus 26 equals 194. 194 is my maximum heart rate. Next, I multiply 194 by .5 to get 97, and then by .85 to get 165. Therefore, my THR is 97-165.

For those of you who have a heart condition, or high blood pressure, and are on a beta blocker, talk to your physician about your specific THR.

They will recommend that you start with the range of your resting heart rate plus 30 to 50 beats, depending on your individual condition or rhythm.

For those who are just starting to exercise, aim to maintain the lower end of your range. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that for just heart health, an individual should participate in 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic exercise.

For weight loss, 300 minutes a week is recommended. For those of you who think that 150 minutes a week is an unrealistic number, let me break it down for you.

Exercising every day of the week may be out of the question for many people. So let’s say 5 days of the week you have to get 30 minutes of aerobic exercise in a day to achieve 150 minutes. You can break that 30 minutes up into 3 sessions a day, if need be. You can take a 10 minute walk in the morning, at lunch and after dinner.

To sum up the aerobic fuel system, the duration of the exercise is longer than 3 minutes at a steady state of intensity.

Different forms of exercise are walking, jogging, biking, etc. Just as long as you don’t stop. It takes much longer to provide ATP than the anaerobic system, however it does not produce a byproduct of lactate, so we are able to maintain workloads longer.

The big take away from this article is that this type of exercise (aerobic) is crucial for heart health.

Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the United States. We as a community need to understand this, and start taking preventive action.

You can walk, jog, or bike with a friend, neighbor, or family member. In this busy world, where we usually put ourselves last, we owe it to ourselves to live a healthier, longer, happier life.

Pokorski Motorsports opens 2016 season with strong showing

Pokorski Motorsports powers to fast start

By Jeff Pederson

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 10, 2016 – After months of careful planning and meticulous preparation, Paul Pokorski put his Pokorski Motorsports team’s new 2016 Maxim to the test last Friday and Saturday night with an Interstate Racing Association (IRA) and Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) weekend doubleheader to open the 2016 racing season.

The new car proved to be fast right out of the box, which yielded some impressive results in the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing opener on Saturday, May 7.

“We didn’t really know what to expect with the new car, but overall I’m really pleased with how things turned out over the weekend,” Pokorski said. “The car handled really well. I couldn’t really have asked for much more from the car for our first few nights out this year.”

Pokorski wasted little time putting the car in victory lane in the PDTR opener.

After starting on the outside of the front row in the fourth sprint car heat race, Paul outpowered polesitter Brandon McMullen to take the lead in the first corner. He was never seriously challenged the rest of the way en route to the heat race victory and a spot in the A main field.

Pokorski rolled out for the 25-lap sprint car A main from the fourth starting spot. In the opening laps, Pokorski settled into the fourth position in the running order. A spin by Kevin Karnitz bunched the field on lap 5. On the restart, Pokorski fell back to sixth. However, that was short-lived, as he motored past Danny Schlafer and Tim Haddy along the inside groove to regain the fourth position by lap 7.

At the mid-way point of the race, Pokorski worked his way up to battle with polesitter Jim Melis and fifth-started Kurt Davis for second place.

However, lapped traffic started to become more of a factor as the laps wound down. With most of the field stuck to the inside lane, passing was difficult for everyone, especially for the leaders, who were looking to negotiate lapped cars in the closing laps.

Haddy battled back to pass Pokorski for fourth place with three laps to go. Pokorski held on in the closing laps to secure a strong fifth-place A main finish behind race winner Donny Goeden, Kurt Davis (second), Jim Melis (third) and Tim Haddy (fourth).

“The track took rubber, so I had to stick with running the inside lane,” Pokorski said. “It became kind of follow the leader. I don’t really like to run the bottom the whole race, but that’s how it turned out.

“Overall, I was really happy with how the car ran in the heat and the feature,” Pokorski said. “For our first time out at Plymouth this year, it was really a great night. I’m not saying it was perfect by any means, but I think we are ahead of the game right now. There are some adjustments we can make for next week, which will hopefully make the car a bit better.”

The team opened the 2016 campaign on Friday, May 6, joining up with the Interstate Racing Association for the Manitowoc Mayhem event at the Manitowoc Speedway.

Running a 360 MSA car against the high-powered 410 IRA machines on the sweeping Manitowoc Speedway third-mile track proved to be an uphill battle for the team.

After laying down the 22nd fastest qualifying lap in the 30 car IRA field, Pokorski started eighth in the first IRA heat race. He spent the early part of the race battling for position with Mike Decker, before Decker dropped out with mechanical trouble.

Pokorski’s 8th place finish in the heat race, put the car in the B main. After starting fifth in the B main, he dropped back a few positions in the opening laps to eventually post a 9th place finish, which was three spots out a transfer position for the A main.

“Because it wasn’t a points race for us, we tried some things for the IRA race at Manitowoc that we normally wouldn’t do,” Pokorski Motorsports Crew Chief Dave Schultz said. “I think it is safe to say that we won’t be making a few of those changes again. The race allowed us to get some extra laps in and at the same time we were able to learn some things not to do.”

The Pokorski Motorsports team will return to action this Saturday, May 14 in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action at the Plymouth Dirt Track.

Pokorski Motorsports would like to direct special recognition to R&H Enterprises, Goeden’s Auto Body, Christel Sign and Goodwin Racing Engines for helping to get the team’s new 2016 Maxim on the track this season.

Pokorski Motorsports set for weekend doubleheader

Pokorski Motorsports preps for doubleheader weekend

By Jeff Pederson

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 3, 2016 – After rain put a damper on the highly anticipated 2016 season debut for Paul Pokorski Motorsports last Saturday, April 30 at the Plymouth Dirt Track, the team is looking forward to putting its brand new Maxim to the test with a pair of races this Friday and Saturday night.

On Friday, May 6, the familiar blue Pokorski Motorsports No. 4 machine will compete with the Interstate Racing Association (IRA) 410 sprint car series in the Manitowoc Mayhem event at the Manitowoc Speedway.

The event will be noteworthy for a couple of reasons, as it will mark not only the team’s first race of the 2016 season, but also the start of the final season of racing at the Manitowoc Speedway.

In January, the Manitowoc County Board approved an offer from Meijer Stores to purchase the land where the race track and grandstands are currently located. As a result, the track and grandstand will be removed at the conclusion of the 2016 season to make way for a new Meijer store.

Pokorski is looking forward to the opportunity to open the season on what the team considers its home track. The team is scheduled to make six additional appearances at Manitowoc Speedway in Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) action in 2016, and it also plans to compete with the IRA series at the Harbor Town Showdown event on July 1.

“We are looking at this race as another good opportunity to run at Manitowoc during its final season,” Pokorski said. “It is a bittersweet chance to run some more laps at one of my favorite race tracks.”

While the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion knows running a 360 motor against high horsepower 410s in an IRA event will be a definite challenge, he believes it will help the team prepare for future MSA events.

“Since we are using our MSA car to run with IRA, the only things we have to change are the rear tires and top wing,” Pokorski said. “Running our MSA motor puts us at a pretty big weight and horsepower disadvantage, but we look at it as a chance to learn the new car and try some things we wouldn’t want to try during an MSA points paying night.”

After competing with the IRA at Manitowoc on Friday night, the team will head to the Plymouth Dirt Track for the rescheduled Plymouth Dirt Track Racing (PDTR) season opener on Saturday, May 7.

Pokorski Motorsports would like to direct special recognition to R&H Enterprises, Goeden’s Auto Body, Christel Sign and Goodwin Racing Engines for helping to get the team’s new 2016 Maxim on the track this season.

The Manitowoc Mayhem IRA event at the Manitowoc Speedway, which also features Sport Mods and Grand Nationals, will begin with IRA qualifying at 6:30 p.m. Pit gates open at 3 p.m. with grandstands opening at 5 p.m.

PDTR racing action, which features MSA Sprint Cars, WDLMA Late Models, Grand Nationals and B Mods, starts at 6 p.m. this Saturday, May 7. Fit For You No. 4 by Scott Rejholec

Fit For You – No. 4

by Scott Rejholec

As mentioned in the last article, exercise can be defined as any intentional act of physical activity that induces structural stress to our body.

The result of this stress is that our body makes adaptations. Today we will be covering one fuel system that our body utilizes, called the anaerobic fuel system.

First and foremost, we need to understand what our body uses as its energy. Like a car running on gas, diesel, or even electricity, our body uses what’s called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

There are two ways to produce ATP, anaerobically and aerobically.

So what does anaerobic mean?

Anaerobic can be defined as a process that does not require oxygen. Some of you may ask, well how does that work? We are breathing in oxygen, why wouldn’t our body utilize it?

To explain this, let me first provide some examples of exercises that fall under the anaerobic fuel system.

Sprints, high intensity intervals, and resistance training (pushing or pulling an object). There are obviously more that fall into this category, but the main point is that all of these exercises will last anywhere from 6 seconds to 3 minutes.

During this timeframe, our bodies are requiring immediate energy, because they are working at such a high level.

We can think of it as the comparison of city and highway mileage. In the city, you are going to go through more gas because of the quick stopping and accelerating.

Anaerobic exercises burn through ATP fast so it needs a quick fuel system to replenish the ATP. This method of providing the ATP is called glycolysis.

Another question arises, why wouldn’t our body always use the glycolysis method if it provides the energy, ATP, the fastest?

Unfortunately, glycolysis involves a fermentation process that breaks your stored glucose, called glycogen, down into this ATP.

Due to the fact that most of us in this community are German, I’ll use the example of making sauerkraut

When fermenting the cabbage, there is a byproduct of mold that lines the top layer. Like the byproduct of mold on the cabbage, glycolysis makes a byproduct of lactate. The accumulation of this lactate over a short period of time can result in inhibiting glycolysis, resulting in less power output and fatigue.

If enough of lactate is produced and your body has not yet built up a tolerance to it (deconditioned), it can cause an individual to get nauseated.

Of course all individuals can change that outcome. Through consistent training, an individual has the ability to increase their lactate threshold. This threshold is basically a point of how good your body is at clearing the lactate, so it does not inhibit your energy production, glycolysis.

With that being said, lactate can sound like a bad guy in a physiological perspective, but lactate has been shown to fuel the release of what’s called norepinephrine.

Norepinephrine is a hormone that has an immediate effect on making your neurons stronger. This connection helps your brain learn better and remember better, reducing the chances of developing dementia.

To sum the anaerobic fuel system up, the duration of the exercise is from 6 seconds to 3 minutes. It is a quick source of providing you fuel, adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

However, it uses glycolysis to produce the ATP, which is a fermentation process. This fermentation process creates lactate, which if an individual does not have a high tolerance of, can inhibit the production of ATP resulting in a reduction of performance.

In the next article, we will be going over the aerobic fuel system.

This fuel system is utilized when sustaining a constant workload for longer than 5 min. For instance walking, jogging, and biking.

I understand this is a lot of information to take in, but I want everyone to understand what your body is going through when you exercise.

After the next article, we will get back to the basics of how to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Pokorski Motorsports to make 2016 debut

Pokorski Motorsports ready to roll for PDTR season opener

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) April 26, 2016 – After putting their new 2016 Maxim through the paces during a practice session at the Manitowoc Speedway last Saturday, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team are set to fire up the 2016 Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) season at the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing (PDTR) opener at Sheboygan County Fair Park this Saturday, April 30.

Last Saturday’s practice offered a good opportunity for Pokorski and his crew to shake down the new car they have worked tirelessly to assemble to their liking over the past two months.

“I would say the practice was a success,” Pokorski said. “The very dry track conditions limited what we could learn about the new car, but the results to the changes we made were encouraging.”

With off-season preparations now complete, the Pokorski Motorsports team is keenly focused on this Saturday’s PDTR opener, which will kick off its 24th season of dirt track competition.

After capturing the MSA Masters Series championship in 2014 and placing second in the MSA standings in 2015, Pokorski is hoping the 2016 campaign will bring even more success.

“I am really looking forward to Saturday night’s season opener at PDTR,” Pokorski said. “The practice was a good time to make sure we hadn’t missed anything crucial on the car and to allow us to work together as a team and rehearse our routine of what we need to do to get ready to be on the track each night.”

Pokorski Motorsports would like to direct special recognition to R&H Enterprises, Goeden’s Auto Body, Christel Sign and Goodwin Racing Engines for helping to get the team’s new 2016 Maxim on the track this season.

The Pokorski Motorsports sponsors for the 2016 season include: Allied Bearing Corporation, Behling Racing Products, The Cawley Company, Goeden’s Auto Body, Goodwin Racing Engines, Hagar’s Half-Pound Cookies, Jens, Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Services & Crematory, Kettle Moraine Landscaping, Novak’s Service Center, Pedal Down Promotions and Tisler Salvage Inc.

Fit for You – Article No. 3

Fit For You – No. 3

What is exercise, and why should I do it?

This article will kick off a three-part series on what exercise is and the two main energy systems our bodies use to fuel exercise.

Let’s start with asking this question – Exercise is good for us, right? The obvious answer is, “Yes, of course!”

In reality, exercise does cause some damage to our bodies – temporarily. Now, before anyone starts getting any ideas of using that as an excuse to not exercise, let me explain further.

To keep it simple, exercise can be defined as any intentional act of physical activity with intentional being the key word.

When our bodies go through this physical activity, we are put under a great deal of stress. When we think of stress, we think of deadlines, bills to pay, tests to take or talking in front of a group of people. This mental stress elevates our heart rate, blood pressure and makes us feel uneasy.

However, when we are exercising, we are inducing a physical stress to our bones, joints and muscles. This is how exercise does some damage to the body in the form of stress.

Fortunately for us, our bodies are unbelievably efficient at adapting to stress. When our bodies are under this physical stress, they release certain hormones that help our bodies strengthen as a result of the stress.

If we don’t provide our bodies with this necessary form of stress, a natural occurrence termed sarcopenia starts to occur in our bodies. Sarcopenia is when our bodies start to lose muscle mass. It is very similar to osteoporosis, which is the natural occurrence of the loss in bone density.

Our bodies were not meant to be stationary. They were designed to be active and to be stressed. As mentioned before, our bodies are unbelievably efficient at adapting to stress.

For instance, if we were to do the same type of exercise for more than two weeks, at the same intensity and duration, we are no longer stressing it.

By this time, our body has adapted to the stress we are inducing and no longer feels stressed. When our body doesn’t feel that physical stress, we no longer make improvements.

This is the key point. We must understand that being active and exercising are of course great things. But we need to focus on challenging ourselves. In order for us to continue to grow stronger structurally, we need to constantly surprise our bodies with a new exercise, a faster pace or a longer duration. And no, you are never too old to do something new.

With that being said, I want those of you who set goals from the last article to keep working on them. If you haven’t started yet, it’s never too late. If you’re having trouble, remember to keep focused on why you set those goals in the first place. If you have already accomplished your goal, let this article be a guide to moving you forward to the next challenge.

In the next article, we will be going over the anaerobic fuel system. This fuel system is utilized in sprints, body weight exercises and free weights.

Fit for You – Article No. 2

Fit for You – Article No. 2

 By Scott Rejholec

Hello everyone!

What comes to mind when you think about living a healthier life? Is it walking more, getting to the gym, eating better, maybe its quitting smoking?

There are a lot of thoughts and ideas on what can lead to living a healthier life. Unfortunately, the thought process of starting is the beginning and the end for many individuals.

By the end of this article, I challenge you to write down one way you want to alter your lifestyle to live healthier.

The big question to be answered here is: Why should I live healthier? Many may say, “I’m doing just fine the way I am.” Others say, “I’m on my feet all day, or I’m active at work, I don’t need to exercise” Some may say eating healthy is “too expensive”

On the opposite spectrum, you may already be very in tune with living healthy, but may need to change things up a bit.

There is an endless list of reasons why exercising, eating healthier and taking time for yourself gets put on the backburner.

I’ll be the first one to admit that there are many times I personally reason with myself that I’m too tired to exercise, or I justify why eating a pint of Ben and Jerrys in one sitting is no big deal.

By no means am I suggesting that any one person should, or has to be perfect. However, in life we need a good balance of doing what we sometimes justify is right, and what is actually right for our body.

Let’s look at the example of your body as a car. We need to consistently tune our car to keep it running well. Whether it is putting in the right fuel, changing the oil or rotating the tires.

Like a car, your body needs the proper amount of appropriate movement, fuel and maintenance to run properly and ultimately longer.

I am a firm believer in setting realistic goals. Without goals, it is extremely easy to just go with the flow of life until you realize that you need to get back into the swing of things.

With that being said, right now, write down one goal for yourself or your family and put a time stamp on it.

Don’t delay this process, the thoughts are in your head now, so write one down!

A good tip is to put that goal somewhere you are going to see it daily. If you consistently see your goal, you will be less likely to allow it to be just a thought.

Whether you find motivation in looking or feeling better for yourself, beating your personal record in any one thing, living longer with your spouse, or seeing your kids and grandkids grow up, I’m challenging you right now to start making the commitment to living a healthier lifestyle.

As a conclusion to this article, I want to remind you that we are only here for a little while, so let’s make the most of every day and live a longer, healthier, happier life together

After all, life really is too precious.

Starting with the next article, we will be diving into more specifics on what exercise is.

Fit For You, Sheboygan Falls

Fit for You, Sheboygan Falls

By Scott Rejholec

Hello everyone! My name is Scott Rejholec.

Starting this week, I will be writing bi-weekly articles on health-related topics. Born and raised in Sheboygan Falls, I know there is a strong sense of community within this city.

With that strong sense of community, I want to make sure that we are as healthy and active as possible and that we do it together. That being said, I want to share my knowledge and experience with you so that we as a community can be healthier together.

My background in health and fitness started as a master personal trainer. I became certified at the National Personal Training Institute in Orlando, Florida in 2009.

For six years, I was fortunate enough to be a lead boot camp instructor, sports performance coach, and a one-on-one personal trainer at a health club in Grafton, called Form and Fitness.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from UW-Milwaukee, and I currently work at Aurora Health Center in Grafton as an exercise physiologist in cardiac-pulmonary rehab.

What topics are going to be in this article you may ask? Some examples include the basics of what exercise is, how to set realistic goals, quick and safe workouts at home, exercises to relieve or prevent bad backs and interval training.

Other topics regarding your body are contributing risk factors that lead to heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol, cleanses, how to effectively manage COPD and much more.

Whether you are a marathon runner, a high school athlete, a casual walker or maybe not interested in health at all, these articles will be interesting and informative.

My goal is that we as a community can live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

If you have any questions, comments, or want to see a specific topic be presented in these articles please feel free to email me at scottrejholec@yahoo.com or follow “Fit For You Sheboygan Falls” on Facebook, as I will be posting my articles, videos and other health related topics on there.
