(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 14, 2021 – Over the course of his 29-year career, Paul Pokorski has seen pretty much everything behind the wheel of an open-wheel race car.
However, the second-to-last Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car event of the 2021 season at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. brought along a brand new scenario for the 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion in the form of a rather mysterious gear and rear-end malfunction, which hampered the Pokorski Motorsports team’s efforts throughout the night.
With 27 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars on hand, Pokorski lined up second in the second 10-lap 360 Sprint Car heat race. Pokorski used a strong start to take the lead from polesitter Justin Erickson with a low move in turn two of the opening lap.
Pokorski proceeded to build up a sizeable lead over the next few laps and appeared headed for a heat race victory and berth in the evening’s 25-lap 360 Sprint Car A-main field.
However, Pokorski’s suddenly slowed on lap 6 when his No. 4 machine slipped out of gear. The car continued to sputter on and off over the final four circuits as the three-time Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Winged Super Modified champion limped home to a seventh-place finish.
After the Pokorski Motorsports crew went about addressing the issue in the pit area, Pokorski lined up ninth in the 12-lap 360 Sprint Car B main, needing to finish in the top six to move on to the A main.
Pokorski used a solid start to move into eighth during the opening lap on the lightning-fast third-mile clay oval track surface. However, the gear issue appeared again on lap 7, which forced Pokorski to pull into the infield. Pokorski’s evening ended with an 11th-place showing in the B main.
“Our car kept popping out of gear, but only once it got warm,” Pokorski said. “The strange part is it would engage on its own when I would slow down. I’ve never had that happen before.
“It turned out to be a disappointing night, but, hey, that’s racing,” Pokorski said. “We went back to work the day after to fix the rear end issue and some minor handling issues.”
The Pokorski Motorsports team will return to action this Saturday, Sept. 18 for a Midwest Sprint Car Association event at Gravity Park Speedway in Chilton, Wis. as part of the track’s annual Chilton Fall Classic.
Second-year 360 Sprint Car competitor Alex Pokorski will return to the seat of the No. 4 car for the event.
Racing is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
