Karnitz, Mueller, Sorce, Green, Collins claim PDTR triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 29, 2017 – On a picture-perfect evening for racing, Plymouth Dirt Track Racing competitors, crews, staff and fans gathered to share in a program which provided a little bit of everything – from the joy of first-time A-main winners, to the spectacle of thrilling finishes, to the heartbreak of mechanical misfortune, to the excitement of the popular Kids’ Backpack Night giveaway at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth Saturday, July 29.

It was certainly a night West Bend’s Kevin Karnitz will never forget as he picked up his first career PDTR Sprint Car A main victory. Three-time PDTR Late Model champion and current point leader Brad Mueller of Random lake notched his second A-main win of the season, while Dan Sorce of West Allis registered his third Grand National A-main triumph of the season. Point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls continued his stranglehold on the competition by notching his fifth PDTR B Mod A-main victory of the 2017 campaign and Dave Collins of Madison notched his first career PDTR Micro Sprint main event win.

Polesitter Tim Haddy of Waupun and outside front row starter Dick Kaiser of Milwaukee led the 22-car Sprint Car field to the green flag in the 25-lap A-main with Haddy grabbing the early lead.

Two-time PDTR Sprint Car champ Danny Schlafer of Sussex used the outside line to power his way from his eighth starting spot to third on the opening lap. On lap 3, fourth starter Kevin Karnitz worked his way past Haddy into the lead.

While Karnitz gradually built up a solid eight-car advantage, Haddy and Schlafer battled back and forth for the runner-up spot as the two veteran racers exchanged slide jobs over the span of several laps.

On lap 8, Karnitz began to encounter lapped traffic and shortly after Schlafer cleared Haddy for second and quickly closed in on Karnitz for the lead. By lap 11, Schlafer worked both the high and low grooves to pressure Karnitz for the top spot.

Two laps later, Schlafer swept past Karnitz with a big slide job. However, a caution flag shortly after negated the both and kept Karnitz in the lead.

Karnitz pulled out to a solid lead on the ensuing restart as Schlafer found himself again engaged with Haddy in a battle for second. Shortly after, Schlafer and Haddy collided in turn one and collected 2008 PDTR Sprint Car champion Lance Fassbender of Burnett to trigger a caution period.

Schlafer managed to make repairs in the work area and return to the rear of the field, but Haddy and Fassbender were done for the night.

When the race resumed, Karnitz remained entrenched in the lead with fifth starter Doug Wondra of Oakfield second and Paul Pokorski of West Bend, who started sixth, in third and seventh starter Justin Miller of Plymouth fourth.

Pokorski and Miller each showed their strength in the closing laps to challenge Karnitz for the top spot. However, Karnitz was not to be denied as he hung on to post his first career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory in his eighth season wheeling a Sprint Car.

Pokorski placed second, Miller was third, PDTR Sprint Car point leader Brandon McMullen charged with up the 15th starting spot to finish fourth and Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls moved all the way up from 19th at the start to place fifth.

Former PDTR Late Model champion Billy Rezutek of Big Bend outpowered polesitter Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha along the high line to take the lead on the drop of the green flag of the 25-lap Late Model A main.

On lap 2, Union Grove’s Chris Carlson, who started third, snuck under Rezutek to grab the lead. However, Rezutek used the cushion to reclaim the lead on lap 7. Behind Rezutek and Carlson, fifth starter Brad Mueller and Cleveland’s Justin Schmidt, who started sixth, mounted their own side-by-side duel for third.

As the laps wound down, Rezutek found himself approaching lapped traffic on lap 19 with Mueller and Schmidt still mounting an epic duel for third close behind Carlson.

With the top four cars bunched tightly in slower traffic, Mueller dove to the bottom of the track on lap 22 to clear a lapped car in the middle of the track, as well as Rezutek, who was running the extremely high. The thrilling move gave Mueller the lead, which he maintained over the final three laps en route to his 18th career Late Model A main victory.

Carlson was second, Rezutek finished third, Schmidt took fourth and defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler of Glenbeulah placed fifth after starting ninth.

In the 25-lap Grand National A main, 2008 PDTR Grand National champion Matt Yancey of Sheboygan held the early lead before former PDTR Late Model champ Dan Sorce, who started fourth, used a strong outside move to seize the lead in turn four on lap 7.

Sorce endured a pair of caution periods over the final 18 laps to post his seventh career PDTR Grand National A main victory. Outside front row starter Matt Loehr of Dotyville placed second, followed by sixth starter Tyler Kulow of New Holstein in third, 2011 PDTR Grand National champion Mark Fieber of Cascade, who charged from the 14th starting spot to place fourth, and Yancey, who wound up fifth.

Polesitter Brandon Knepprath of Kewaskum, who won his first career heat race earlier in the evening, and Mark Hoeppner lead the 25-lap B Mod A main to the green flag from the front row.

Hoeppner gained the early advantage over 2016 PDTR B Mod champ Brandon Berth of Plymouth, who started fourth in second. Meanwhile, Justin Green was the man on the move as he worked his way into the top five from his 11th starting spot on lap 3.

Point leader Justin Green, who started 11th, entered the top five by lap three and wasted little time in challenging for the lead. After a pair of caution periods, Green swept past Hoeppner into the lead following a restart on lap 6.

Green would not be headed the rest of the way as he bolted away to notch his fifth B Mod A main victory of the season and his career. Travis Hansen of Chilton of charged from the 17th starting spot to finish second, Berth was third, third starter Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls finished fourth and seventh starter Brian Konitzer of Sheboygan placed fifth.

Fourth starter Dave Collins picked up his first career PDTR Micro Sprint A main victory in the 15-lap main event, followed by Tory Strauss of Waterloo (second), Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake (third), Emily Portschy of Plymouth (fourth) and Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee (fifth).

B main victories went to Tony Wondra of Campbellsport (Sprint Car) and Travis Hansen (B Mod).

Over 75 youngsters received special backpacks from a driver as part of the second annual PDTR Kids Backpack Night giveaway and Buffalo Wild Wings served as the evening’s trophy sponsor.

Former Plymouth flagman and track prep worker Bob Mertes who passed away earlier in the day, was remembered for his contributions to racing at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds track before the start of the Sprint Car A-main.

The next Plymouth Dirt Track racings program on Saturday, Aug. 5 will feature the second appearance of the season of the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series. PDTR 360 Sprint Cars and Micro Sprints will also be on the all-open-wheel card. The trophy sponsor will be JDL Automotive and Detailing. Hot laps will begin at 6 p.m. with IRA qualifying and racing to follow.

Melis, Schmidt, Davis, Green, Vanderboom taste PDTR victory

By Jeff Pederson-Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 22, 2017  – On a night which showcased numerous hotly contested battles on the track and provided an ample opportunity for young autograph seekers to get up close and personal with their favorite drivers in the pit area, three seasoned veterans, a top candidate for breakthrough driver of the year and one of the youngest competitors in the pit area captured A-main event victories Saturday, July 22, in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.

One of the most accomplished veterans at PDTR, Jim Melis of Glenbeulah, held off a late charge from point leader Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh to claim his first Sprint Car A-main victory of 2017. Jim Schmidt Cleveland notched his second Late Model A-main triumph the season, while B Mod point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls posted his fourth A-main triumph of the year. Veteran Sprint Car driver Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee earned his first career Grand National triumph and 13-year-old Jack Vanderboom posted his second A-main triumph of 2017 in the Micro Sprint division.

Outside front row starter Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls outpowered polesitter Jim Melis to grab the lead in the first corner of the opening lap of the 25-lap Sprint Car event. The first caution of the race appeared on lap 3 when Doug Wondra of Lomira, Nick Melis of Plymouth and Ryan Mayr of New Holstein collided in turn 3 sending Wondra flipping. The resulting damage forced Wondra and Melis to retire from the race, while Mayr was able to continue.

After the restart, Melis used the low groove to slip past Fiedler on lap 4. On the next lap, sixth starter Tyler Brabant of Waupun charged up to seize second on lap 5 and pressure Melis for the lead along the low line.

However, the cagey veteran switched his line and moved to the bottom of the track, which helped to turn back Brabant’s march to the front. Three laps later PDTR Sprint Car point leader Brandon McMullen, who started fourth, slipped past Brabant to assume second on lap 11 and quickly began to close the gap on Melis.

As the leaders encountered lapped traffic on lap 16, McMullen cut the gap even further. On the final lap, McMullen dove under Melis and two skilled racers dueled side by side to the finish line with Melis nipping McMullen by just .06 of a second to claim the 15th career PDTR Sprint Car A main victory and 18th Midwest Sprint Car Association A-main triumph of his career.

McMullen finished second, Brabant recorded a career-best third place showing, fifth starter Kurt Davis paced fourth and eighth starter Lance Fassbender of Burnett rounded out the top five.

Polesitter Charlie Schmidt of Cedar Grove led the first nine circuits of the 25-lap PDTR Late Model A main until Jim Schmidt powered up from his sixth starting position to pressure for the top spot.

On lap 10, Jim Schmidt bolted past Charlie Schmidt to gain the lead with a strong move along the outside groove. The second of two caution periods for debris bunched the field on lap 12.

On the restart, Jim Schmidt checked out to build up a half-lap lead over Charlie Schmidt. After dueling with Charlie Schmidt for numerous laps, three-time PDTR Late Model champ and current point leader Brad Mueller of Random Lake moved into second from his seventh starting position on lap 13 and one lap later, Luxemburg’s Jared Siefert seized third after starting 10th.

However, it was all Jim Schmidt out front as he cruised over the final 11 laps to seal to his second PDTR Late Model A-main victory of the 2017 season and his 11th career PDTR Late Model A-main win.

Mueller finished second, Siefert was third, Charlie Schmidt wound up fourth and Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha rounded out the top five after starting eighth.

Kurt Davis pulled off a huge move in the first turn of the race to lead the opening lap of 25-lap Grand National A main from the inside second row starting spot.

Polesitter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth refused to let Davis run away and hide as he moved in to challenge for the lead on lap 4. The lone caution of the race appeared on lap 9 when Dan Sorce of West Allis collided with Jacob Muehlbauer along the frontstretch.

When the race resumed, Davis again showed his strength with Lammers in tow. The two drivers remained 1-2 in the runner order over the final 13 laps as Davis recorded his first career PDTR Grand National A main victory.

Lammers finished second, fourth starter Tyler Kulow of New Holstein placed third, J.J. Pagel raced up from the ninth starting position to finish fourth and Will Sorce of West Allis, who claimed his first career PDTR Grand National A-main victory last week, finished fifth after starting 11th.

Polesitter J.J. Walvoord took the lead on the drop of the green flag of the 25-lap B Mod A main with third starter and current point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls trailing in second.

Green grabbed the top spot on lap 3 before Walvoord battled back to regain the lead along the outside groove on lap 4. The first of three caution periods came out on lap 4 for a six-car incident in turn 2. On the restart, Green continued to pressure Walvoord for the lead until he finally seized the top spot for good in turn three on lap 7.

Green proceeded to build up a big full straightaway lead over Tim Warner of Fond du Lac, who started fourth. As Green locked down command of the race, several drivers jockeyed for spots in the top five. A flurry of inspired passes and close battles ensued in the final five laps of the race between Walvoord, Gary Glander of Sheboygan Falls, who started sixth, Warner and 11th starter Chad Vetting of Valders.

Green cruised to his fourth career A-main victory and fourth triumph of the 2017 season. A spirited late rally vaulted Vetting to a second-place finish, Glander was third, Walvoord wound up fourth and Warner completed the top five.

After starting fifth, Jack Vanderboom of Dousman grabbed the lead on lap 3 and cruised the rest of the way to notch his second A-main victory of the season ahead of Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie in second.

Tory Strauss of Waterloo took third, polesitter Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake placed fourth and Josh Rehberg of Franklin completed the top five.

The PDTR Autograph Night program was presented by Hopf Farms, which distributed checkered flags to all kids, as well as several other handouts and raffle giveaways throughout the evening, while also serving as the nights trophy sponsor.

Next Saturday, July 29 will feature the second annual PDTR Kids Backpack Night with Buffalo Wild Wings serving as the evening’s trophy sponsor. Racing starts at 6 p.m.

Schlafer, McGrath, Sorce, Lubach, Davis master PDTR mains

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 15, 2017 – Plymouth Dirt Track Racing honored those that keep the sport of auto racing alive on Fan Appreciation Night Saturday, July 15 at the Sheboygan County Fair Grounds third-mile clay oval and considering the high level of entertainment on the track, the bulk of the healthy crowd on hand left appreciative of what they saw.

In the Sprint Car ranks, Danny Schlafer of Sussex claimed his second PDTR A-main victory of the season. Likewise, Mitch McGrath notched victory number two in the Late Model main event. First-time 2017 headline race winners were Will Sorce of Franklin (Grand National), Brad Lubach of Kiel (B Mod) and Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee (Micro Sprint).

Polesitter Paul Pokorski of West Bend jumped out to the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap Sprint Car A main. The 25-year veteran held the top spot through the first eight laps before 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champion Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee, who started third, moved in to challenge as the leaders encountered lapped traffic.

On lap 9, Davis dove underneath the high-riding Pokorski in turn one to assume the top spot, while Schlafer, who started seventh, used the outside groove to take over third.

The next lap produced a five-car incident extending from turn three and the way through the frontstretch, involving Anthony Knierim of Franksville, Justin Miller of Plymouth, Eagle’s Scott Conger, Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum and Davis, who collided with Miller, who had spun exiting turn four.

The damage forced Davis to exit the race, giving the lead back to Pokorski. Of the five cars involved in the incident, only Conger was able to continue.

On the restart, Schlafer pulled off a slide job entering turn three. However, Pokorski turned back under him to lead lap 11. However, Schlafer was not to be denied as he again slid past Pokorski in turn three on lap 12 and made the move stick.

Schlafer road the ragged edge along the high line, jumping the cushion on a few occasions, but still managed to hold off Pokorski over the final 13 laps to notch his 18th career PDTR Sprint Car victory and the 46th overall main event triumph in Midwest Sprint Car Association competition.

Pokorski placed second, followed by 18th starter Tim Haddy of Waupun in third, Lance Fassbender of Burnett, who started 11th, fourth and fourth starter Al Schlafer of Sussex, who rounded out the top five.

Joel Bennett led the first six laps of the 25-lap Late Model A-main from the outside front row starting spot. On lap 7, after a caution flag for the stalled car of defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler of Glenbeulah in turn one, 2014 PDTR Late Model champion Mitch McGrath, who started fifth got past Bennett in turn one.

McGrath proceeded to build up a solid lead while ninth starter Justin Hirt of Tigerton and seventh starter Chris Carlson of Union Grove dueled side by side for second for several laps before Hirt claimed the spot for good.

Hirt, who was making his first PDTR appearance of the season, used a late charge to close in on McGrath in the final laps. However, McGrath held Hirt off to collect his ninth career PDTR Late Model A main victory by a five-car-length margin.

Hirt was second, sixth starter Jim Schmidt of Cleveland placed third, three-time PDTR Late Model champ and current point leader Brad Mueller of Random Lake took fourth from the 13th starting position and polesitter Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan took fifth.

After a special driver introduction ceremony, the extended 30-lap Grand National A main saw outside front row starter Justin Erickson of Plymouth grab the initial lead.

Erickson encountered lapped traffic on lap 9, which allowed third starter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth to close the gap on lap 13. Despite losing a hood pin, which left his hood flapping in the freeze, Lammers made several attempts to wrestle the lead away from Erickson before the first caution flag of the race appeared on lap 21 when Jim Rychtik of Port Washington collided with Kurt Davis and Tyler Kulow of New Holstein in turn one.

When the race resumed Lammers felt pressure from 2010 PDTR Grand National champ Brian Gilles of Plymouth, who started on the pole. However, both Gilles and Lammers left the track with mechanical issues when the second caution of the race came out on lap 23.

On the next restart, it was two-time PDTR Grand National champion Don Sorce Jr., who was driving as the No. 14 car for Dan Sorce, moved in to challenge from the 13th starting spot.

Using the high groove Sorce Jr. claimed the top spot in turn two on lap 24, as 78-year-old Dick Hed of Plymouth , who started fifth, moved into the runner-up spot.

Sorce Jr. appeared to have the race in hand, but Will Sorce, who started 15th, had other things in mind. With Sorce. Jr. running low, Sorce ventured up high to pass Hed and steal the lead away from Sorce Jr. in turn four with two laps to go.

Sorce went on to record his first PDTR Grand National A main victory of the 2017 season. Sorce Jr. was second, Hed placed third, Matt Loehr of Dotyville came from the ninth starting spot to take fourth and Erickson completed the top five.

Outside front row starter Mark Hoeppner of Hartford led the first two laps of the 25-lap B Mod A main before sixth starter J.J. Walvoord assumed the top spot on lap 3.

After the first of two caution flags for the stalled car of Tim Thrun of Horicon, three-time PDTR Grand National champion Brad Lubach, who started eighth, moved into challenge Hoeppner for second.

Driving the car normally steered by Chad Vetting, Lubach took control of second on lap 7. Two laps later, Lubach used the high groove to bolt past Walvoord into the lead in turn one.

Walvoord rallied over the final six laps to mount some pressure for the lead. However, Lubach, who holds the all-time lead with 24 PDTR Grand National A-main victories, went on to post his first career PDTR B Mod A-main triumph.

Walvoord was second, point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls placed third after starting 11th, Glen Blanke of Sheboygan Falls, who started ninth, finished fourth and fourth starter Cody Eickberg of Plymouth placed fifth.

Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee won his first career PDTR Micro Sprint A main. Preston Ruh was second, followed by Dave Collins in third.

Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum won the Sprint Car B main.

The program attracted 25 Sprint Cars, 23 Grand Nationals, 23 B Mods, 13 Late Models and three Micro Sprints.

The trophy sponsor for the evening was A-1 Appliance and Repair. The next PDTR program on Saturday, July 22 will be Autograph Night. All kids in attendance will receive checkered flags courtesy of the evening’s sponsor Hopf Farms. Racing will begin at 6 p.m.

Gustin, Jungwirth, Sorce Jr. score big wins at PDTR

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 14, 2017 – The stars of the Dirt Modified world turned out to headline a special Friday night racing Plymouth Dirt Track Racing program Friday, July 14, at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.

The evening featured The Plymouth Dirt Track debut of the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) and inaugural Cow Bell Street Stock Tour, as well as the PDTR Grand National division for a non-points event.

In the 40-lap USMTS main event, Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa took home the checkered flag. Jeff Jungwirth of Oshkosh notched the A-main victory in the non-stop Cow Bell Street Stock Tour event, while Don Sorce Jr. of West Allis notched his second straight PDTR Grand National A-main victory.

Polesitter Cory Mahder of Eau Claire jumped out to the early lead in the USMTS A-main over outside front row starter Jake Timm of Winona, Minn. On lap 3, Gustin, who started fourth, made his presence felt as he dove underneath Timm to take over the runner-up spot.

Mahder ran the high groove and Gustin choose to stay low in the early going as the leaders set a quick pace in the opening laps. Meanwhile USMTS Northern Series point leader Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, who came into the night having won the three previous USMTS races this week at Luxembug Speedway, 141 Speedway in Francis Creek and the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway, stormed up from his 12th starting spot to secure fifth place on lap 8.

After a caution for debris on lap 10 and another on lap 12 for a two-car spin in turn four, Gustin continued to track down Mahder before pulling into the lead coming off of turn four on lap 13.

VanderBeek followed Gustin to the front taking second place from Mahder on lap 14 and wasting no time challenging for the lead. Gustin used a primarily outside line to maintain the lead over the hard-charging VanderBeek, who dedicated himself to running a low line.

VanderBeek ducked under Gustin on lap 15 as the two top USMTS competitors dueled side by side until Gustin was able to separate himself two laps later. The leaders caught up to lapped traffic on lap 24, which proved to be just what Gustin needed.

The veteran Modified and Late Model racer sliced his way skillfully through dense lapped traffic to build up a full straight advantage over VanderBeek, who had to deal with a challenge from eighth starter Cade Dillard of Robeline, La. in the closing laps.

Gustin went on to post his 84th career USMTS main event win and second USMTS Northern Region A-main victory of the season by nearly a half-lap margin over VanderBeeck, who saw his three-race winning streak come to an end. However, VanderBeeck was able to secure the 2017 USMTS Northern Region points title.

Dillard finished third, Mahder was fourth and 11th starter Lucas Schott of Chatfield, Minn. rounded out the top five.

Polesitter Jeff Jungwirth grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag of the 30-lap Cow Bell Street Stock Tour A main. On lap 4, third starter Kyle Genett of Rangeline moved up to second and immediately set sail to reel in Jungwirth.

Lapped traffic made things very interesting for the leaders in the caution-free race beginning on lap 12. With 11 laps to go, Jungwirth found himself bottled up behind a lapped car, which allowed Genett to close drastically.

With lapped traffic still baffling Jungwirth, Genett used the high groove to bolt into the lead in turn three on lap 26. However, Jungwirth was not to be denied as he battled back to regain the lead on the following lap.

Jungwirth and Genett continued to duel side by side over the final two laps before Jungwirth surged ahead to notch a five-car-length victory over Genett, who had to settled for second. Fourth starter Cody Potter of Pell Lake placed third, Alex Crapser finished fourth and Frank Knaus of Rosendale finished fifth after starting sixth.

Paul Diefenthaler of Manitowoc and Rice Lake’s Jim Randall finished in a tie for the first ever Cow Bell Street Stock tour title with 141 points each.

The 30-lap PDTR Grand National A main turned into the Don Sorce Jr. show. The two-time PDTR Grand National champion started on the outside of the front row and outpowered polesitter Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee to take the lead on the opening lap.

By lap 7, Sorce Jr. had built a comfortable half-straightaway lead over Davis. The first of two caution flags was displayed on lap 9 for debris in turn one. On the restart, Matt Loehr of Dotyville used a low move to slip past fifth starter Tyler Kulow of Plymouth to gain third.

On lap 18, Loehr dove under Davis to assume second in turn four. Loehr managed to stay within striking distance of Sorce Jr. over the final 12 laps, but he was never able to mount a serious challenge.

Sorce Jr. went on to post his 10th career PDTR Grand National A-main victory and second straight triumph at Plymouth this year. Loehr finished second, Davis ended up third, Kulow as fourth and eighth starter Justin Erickson of Plymouth wound up fifth.

B main victories went to Curt Myers of Cameron (USMTS Modifieds) and Charlie Sancinati of West Allis (Grand National).

Fassbender, Buhler, Sorce Jr., Green, Boden claim PDTR Mid-Season Championship triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 8, 2017 – Beautiful summer weather, hot on-track action, extended A-main events and impressive performances from former champions highlighted the 13th annual Plymouth Dirt Track Racing Mid-Season Championship Night of racing at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth Saturday, July 8.

Four of the five PDTR Mid-Season Championship A-main winners visited victory lane for the first time this season, each of which have a coveted PDTR season championship under their belt, including Lance Fassbender of Burnett (Sprint Car), Tim Buhler of Greenbush (Late Model), Don Sorce. Jr. of West Allis (Grand National) and Zach Boden of Cambridge (Micro Sprint). In the B Mod A-main, point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls kept his strong season going by notching his third main event win of the 2017 season.

The 21-car Sprint Car A-main rolled off with polesitter Nich Melis of Plymouth grabbing the lead at the drop of the green flag. By lap four, Fassbender was starting to show his strength as he moved into second place after starting fourth.

Fassbender then reeled in Melis along the high groove of the third-mile clay oval over the next four laps before pulling off a successful slide job in turn one on lap 8 to secure the top spot bringing third starter John Krebsbach of Cascade along with him into second place.

The first of three caution flags appeared on lap 10, which allowed the field to bunch up behind the 2008 PDTR Sprint Car champion. On lap 12, Fassbender got sideways in turn three, but managed to maintain the top spot as the battle for second began to heat up between sixth starter Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh, fifth starter Tim Haddy of Waupun and Plymouth’s Justin Miller, who started eighth.

McMullen advanced to second on lap 13 with Haddy following in third. At the half-way point of the extended 30-lap race, Fassbender held a comfortable full straightaway advantage over McMullen.

On lap 18, the race slowed again for debris. The ensuing restart produced the final caution of the event when Josh Teunissen of Waldo, Anthony Knierim of Franksville, Bill Taylor of Random Lake and Chris Clayton of Waldo collided exiting turn four. Knierim, Taylor and Clayton returned to the race, but Teunissen was done for the night.

On the final restart, 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champion Kurt Davis pulled off a big slide job in turn two to vault past Haddy into third place. At the front of the field, Fassbender ran away and hid over the final 12 laps, working his way through lapped traffic with ease en route to his sixth career PDTR A-main victory and 19th overall Midwest Sprint Car Association main event triumph.

McMullen maintained his PDTR Sprint Car point lead with a solid second-place finish, Davis wound up third, Haddy was fourth and Krebsbach posted a strong five-place finish.

In the 30-lap Mid-Season Championship Late Model A main, former champions Brad Mueller of Random Lake and Tim Buhler dueled side by side on the opening lap before the second starting Buhler surged ahead along the outside groove in turn four.

For nearly the entire race, Mueller hounded the defending PDTR Late Model champion along the preferred high line, pulling alongside Mueller briefly on several occasions. On lap three, 2014 PDTR Late Model champion Mitch McGrath of Waukesha worked his way up from his sixth starting spot to pass Jim Letizia of Milwaukee to seize third.

McGrath tracked down the lead duo with 10 laps to go and dove low on lap 23 to power past Mueller into second on lap 23. Mueller refused to back down as he held strong along the high groove as McGrath hugged the bottom eventually retaking second on lap 25.

The only caution of the event appeared on lap 26 for the stalled car of Sheboygan’s Randy Markwardt in turn four, which set up a four-lap dash to the finish. Buhler could not be denied though as he held off the spirited efforts of McGrath and Mueller to score his 10th career PDTR A main victory.

McGrath regained second at the finish line, Mueller was third, fifth starter Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha took fourth and Justin Schmidt of Cleveland placed fifth after starting seventh.

Polesitter Will Sorce of West Allis led the first four laps before two-time PDTR Grand National champ Don Sorce Jr. charged up from his fifth starting spot to take command along the low groove on lap 5 of the 30-lap Grand National main event.

Sorce Jr. wasted no time in building up a huge half-lap lead over third starter Jim Rychtik of Port Washington, who was filling in for Brad Weiss.

Although passing was at a premium throughout most of the Grand Nationals headline race, 2011 PDTR Grand National champion Mark Fieber of Cascade, who started second, and 2006 PDTR Late model champ Dan Sorce of West Allis, who started fourth, mounted a spirited side-by-side duel for third place in the final five laps.

Sorce Jr. cruised over the final 10 laps to notch his ninth career PDTR Grand National A-main victory in the non-stop event. Rychtik was second, Fieber finished third, Dan Sorce placed fourth and Justin Erickson of Plymouth ended up fifth, after starting ninth.

Polesitter Tim Thrun of Horicon led the opening three circuits of the extended 30-lap B Mod A main, despite heavy pressure from outside front row starter J.J. Walvoord.

On lap 3, defending PDTR B Mod champion Brandon Berth of Plymouth, who started third, advanced to briefly make it a three-wide battle for the top spot just before the first of five caution flags came out on lap 3 for dislodged infield tires on the track surface.

Berth used the high groove to sweep into the top spot on lap 4 before another caution appeared on lap 6 when Glen Blanke of Sheboygan Falls spun in turn two.

Justin Green, who started seventh, became a serious player on the restart passing Thrun for second on lap 7 and tracking down the high-riding Berth quickly along the low groove.

Green, who came into the night as the PDTR B Mod point leader, was poised to take the lead from Berth on lap 10, but a caution flag for a spin involving Craig Gessner in turn four erased the pass.

Not to be denied, Green bolted into the lead along the low line on lap 13. Eight laps later, Green had built up a full straightaway cushion over Berth. After two move caution flags, 11th starter Chad Vetting of Valders passed Berth to gain the runner-up spot on lap 26.

Green held on to become the first PDTR driver in any division to earn three A-main victories this season. Vetting took second, Berth was third, Gary Glander of Sheboygan Falls placed fourth from the fifth starting spot and Spencer Long of Sheboygan Falls charged from the 18th starting spot to finish fifth.

Outside front row starter Zach Boden post a flag-to-flag victory in the caution-free 15-lap Micro Sprint A main.

It was Boden’s division-leading fourth career PDTR Micro Sprint A-maim victory. Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie was second, followed by Tory Strauss of Waterloo (third), Jack Vanderboom of Dousman (fourth) and Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake (fifth).

Dick Hed of Plymouth won the Grand National B main.

Davis, Siefert, Loehr, Vetting, Rein overcome rain to post PDTR A-main triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 1, 2017 – Undeterred by late afternoon rain showers which left the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds racing facility drenched, the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing show went on as scheduled Saturday, July 1.

After an approximately 30-minute delay to allow for some heavy-duty track prep work, the lightning fast racing surface produced some intense side-by-side action and a few cautions as well throughout the night.

In the extended 30-lap Late Model A-main, which was preceded by driver introductions, Luxemburg’s Jared Siefert posted his first PDTR A-main victory.

Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee claimed the 25-lap Sprint Car A-main, while Matt Loehr of Dotyville (Grand National), Chad Vetting of Valders (B Mod) and Andy Rein of West Bend (Micro Sprint) also posted A-main triumphs in their respective divisions.

The Late Model A-main provided plenty of thrills as polesitter Jared Siefert led the field to the green flag. Siefert outpowered outside front row starter Mike Stangl to take the lead in the second corner on the opening lap.

Meanwhile, three-time PDTR Late Model champion Brad Mueller of Random Lake wasted little time in making his presence felt as he moved up from the sixth starting spot. On lap 2, Mueller worked his way into third place and quickly began to reel in the second-place car of Cleveland’s Jim Schmidt.

The first of two caution flags appeared on lap 6 for a two-car incident in turn two involving Justin Schmidt of Cleveland and Jim Letizia of Milwaukee. Following the restart, third starter Dave Jaeger of West Bend charged in to challenge Schmidt for third on lap 7.

As Jaeger and Schmidt waged a spirited duel for third, Mueller began to steadily close the gap on Siefert for the top spot. Mueller dove to the inside of Siefert on several occasions, but was unable to wrestle the lead away.

The leaders began to move through heavy lapped traffic starting on lap 15, which allowed Mueller to close the gap significantly and eventually dive under Siefert to briefly assume the top spot. However, Mueller’s move ended up being for not when the second caution flag of the event flew for the stalled car of Justin Schmidt of Cleveland in turn two.

With the scoring of the race going to the previous lap, Siefert stayed on tap on the final restart with 10 laps to go. When the green flag flew, Mueller pounced again diving low in an attempt to unseat Siefert from the lead.

However, Siefert stuck to his line in the middle of the track, which made it very difficult for Mueller to find a way by. Siefert fended off Mueller’s advances over the final 10 laps to earn his first career PDTR Late Model victory.

Mueller had to settle for second, Jaeger recorded a strong third-place finish, Jim Schmidt was fourth and 10th starting Justin Schmidt charged to a fifth-place showing.

The 25-lap Sprint Car A main produced plenty of action, complete with four caution flags and a thrilling duel between two of the winningest Sprint Car drivers in PDTR history.

Polesitter Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan got the initial jump on the drop of the green flag before sixth starter Danny Schlafer of Sussex used a huge run on the top of the track to gain the lead in turn four of the opening lap.

The first of four caution flags appeared on lap 3 when Robbie Pribnow of Lomira made contact with the turn two wall. One lap later Anthony Knierim of Franksville spun in turn four after contact with Dannon Tessmer of Slinger.

On the restart, outside front row starter Kurt Davis made a daring move on the inside lane to seize second place. With Schlafer running the high side of the track along the high and treacherous cushion, Davis stuck his machine to the bottom of the track and began to track down Schlafer.

On lap 8, the two-time PDTR Sprint Car champion jumped the cushion in turn two, which allowed Davis to slip past into the lead. Schlafer attempted to regain the lead with a slide job, but Davis crossed over to the bottom the track to maintain the top position.

Back-to-back caution flags came out on lap 9 after Nich Melis of Plymouth stopped on the backstretch and Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum and Knierim collided in turn two.

Following the final restart, Justin Miller of Plymouth bolted up from his seventh starting spot to take third and PDTR Sprint Car point leader Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh followed in fourth after starting 11th.

From there, the 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champion weaved his way skillfully through lapped traffic in the closing laps to secure his first A main victory of the 2017 season and his 17th career PDTR Sprint Car victory to move him into a tie with Schlafer for second on the PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory list.

It was also Davis’ 52nd career Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) victory, which puts him seven wins ahead of Schlafer at the top of the all-time MSA A-main victory list.

Schlafer wound up second, Miller posted an impressive third-place finish, McMullen placed fourth and fifth starter Scott Conger of Eagle put together an impressive effort to round out the top five.

In the accident-marred, time-shortened Grand National A main, Matt Loehr jumped into the lead from his outside front row starting spot with fourth starter Will Sorce of West Allis following into second on the opening lap.

Three laps later, polesitter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth bolted past Sorce by lap 7 he moved in to pressure Sorce for the lead.

The first of five caution flags appeared on lap 8 when Dan Sorce of West Allis stopped on the backstretch.

When the race resumed Will Sorce and Lammers mounted an epic battle for second with Sorce working the high side and Lammers the low groove of the track. On lap 10, Lammers seized second and one lap later, Will Sorce slowed to a stop in turn two with a flat right rear tire.

On the restart, Dick Hed of Plymouth, who started ninth, moved in to challenge Lammers for second along the high groove. However, Hed’s impressive progress was halted by an eight-car pileup in turn four on lap 13.

Two laps later the checkered flag fell on the race upon the expiration of the 25-minute time limit with Loehr posting his second A-main victory of the season and his fifth career PDTR Grand National main event win.

Lammers was second, followed by Hed in third, sixth starter J.J. Pagel of Campbellsport in fourth and Sprint Car A-Main victor Kurt Davis, who started third, rounded out the top five.

Polesitter J.J. Walvoord led the first 20 laps of the B Mod A main with third starter Chad Vetting of Valders mounting a heavy dose of pressure for most of those circuits.

Vetting worked the high groove relentlessly while Walvoord stuck to the low line. On lap 18, 13th starter Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls charged up to join the fray slipping underneath Walvoord just as Vetting vaulted into the lead from the outside groove on lap 20.

Vetting maintained his momentum on the rim of the track to pull away over the final five laps en route to his second victory B Mod main event victory of the 2017 campaign by a solid half-straightway margin.

Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls put together a late rally to finish second, after starting sixth. Walvoord wound up third, seventh starter Glen Blanke of Sheboygan Falls placed fourth and Green rounded out the top five.

Andy Rein of West Bend led every lap of the 12-lap Micro Sprint A main en route to his second career PDTR Micro Sprint main event victory in his first appearance at Plymouth this year.

Dave Collins (second), Preston Ruh (third), Tyler Davis (fourth and Nick Van Stelle (fifth) rounded out the top five Micro Sprint A main finishers

B main victories went to Doug Wondra of Lomira (Sprint Car) and Tim Warner (B Mod).

Trophies for the evening were sponsored by the Sheboygan A’s baseball team.

Next week’s PDTR program will feature the Mid-Season Championships with trophies sponsored by Oscar Blues Brewery. Racing will begin at 6 p.m.

McMullen, Carlson, Cesar, Warner, Vanderboom score PDTR triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 24, 2017 – The sixth Plymouth Dirt Track Racing program of 2017 packed a plentiful dose of action as four drivers visited victory lane for the first time this season in A-main competition, while two winners did so via impressive last-lap passes Saturday, June 24, at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth.

In the 25-lap Sprint Car A-main, point leader Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh pulled off a final lap pass to become the first PDTR Sprint Car driver to claim a repeat victory in 2017.

The contingent of first-time A-main winners this season included Chris Carlson of Union Grove (Late Model), Brian Cesar of Sheboygan (Grand National), Tim Warner of Fond du Lac (B Mod) and Jack Vanderboom of Dousman (Micro Sprint).

Outside front row starter Jim Melis of Glenbeulah led from the drop of the green flag in the Sprint Car A-main event with polesitter Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum trailing in second and Brandon McMullen, who started fourth, in third.

The top three remained locked in position until lap 21, when McMullen snuck past Wenninger to assume the runner-up spot and quickly set his sights on Melis.

The two-time defending Midwest Sprint Car Association champion then charged in to pull off the winning move on the final lap to secure his 10th career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory and the 14th overall A-main triumph of his 360 Sprint Car career.

Melis had to settle for second, Wenninger was third, third starter Anthony Knierum of Franksville was fourth and Tim Haddy of Waupun started and finished fifth.

The 25-lap Late Model A main saw three different drivers lead a lap during the first five circuits, including polesitter Chris Carlson, three-time PDTR Late Model champion Brad Mueller of Random Lake, who started second, and defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler of Glenbeulah, who started third.

On lap 9, Mueller wrestled the lead away from Buhler before Carlson passed both Buhler and Mueller to gain the top spot on lap 15. Carlson then held off Mueller and Buhler over the final 10 laps to notch his third career PDTR Late Model A-main victory.

Mueller finished second, Buhler came home third, seventh starter Jim Schmidt of Cleveland came from the seventh starting spot to finish fourth and 10th starter Jared Siefert of Luxemburg came up from his 10th starting position to place fifth in his first appearance at Plymouth this season.

The 25-lap Grand National A main belonged to Brian Cesar from start to finish. The defending PDTR Grand National champion grabbed the lead from the pole and never looked back.

Current PDTR Grand National point leader Mark Fieber of Cascade used a strong start to grab second place on the opening lap. Roger Lee of Wind Lake, who was making his initial appearance at Plymouth of the 2017 season, bolted up from his seventh starting spot to take second on lap six.

On lap 7, fourth starter Matt Loehr of Dotyville assumed second place. Current PDTR Grand National point leader and 2011 track champion Mark Fieber of Cascade came up from the ninth starting spot to move past Loehr to gain second on lap 13.

Cesar cruised over the final 12 laps to claim his fourth career PDTR Grand National A-main victory. Loehr nipped Fieber on the final lap to take second, Fieber was third, Dan Sorce of West Allis charged from his 11th starting spot to place fourth and eighth starter Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee placed fifth.

Current PDTR B Mod point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls, who started in the pole, worked past second starter Chad Vetting of Valders to gain the lead on lap 7.

Green held the top spot until the final lap when seventh starter Tim Warner of Fond du Lac, who was making his first Plymouth start of 2017, darted past Green to notch his first career PDTR B Mod main event triumph.

Green was second, Beaver Dam’s Nick Schultz came up from the sixth starting spot to place third in his first start of the year at Plymouth, Gary Glander of Sheboygan Falls moved up from the 10th starting spot to finish fourth and 11th starter Brandon Berth of Plymouth claimed fifth.

Antigo’s Jerry Reif bolted into the lead from his third starting spot on the drop of the green flag of the 15-lap Micro Sprint A main.

Reif led the first four laps before Jack Vanderboom moved up from the eighth starting spot to assume the lead on lap 5. Vanderboom fended off Reif over the final 10 circuits to notch his first career PDTR Micro Sprint A main victory.

Reif wound up second, Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie finished third after starting 10th, Jake Reif of Antigo placed fourth and PDTR Micro Sprint point leader Tory Strauss of Waterloo rounded out the top five.

B-main victories went to Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls (Sprint Car), Josh Pierce of Random Lake (Grand National) and Spencer Long of Oshkosh (B Mod).

The evening was sponsored by Collins State Bank and featured drink specials courtesy of Miller Pepsi.

Marten, Schlafer shine in IRA, PDTR Sprint Car competition

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 17, 2017 – The largest crowd of the 2017 season descended on The Plymouth Dirt Track for a double dose of high-horsepower, winged open-wheel action, as the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series joined forces with the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Cars for the IRA’s first of four planned visits to the venerable third-mail clay oval at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth Saturday, June 17.

In the 30-lap IRA A-Main headliner, Kyle Marten of Sheboygan Falls held off a late charge from defending IRA Series champion Jeremy Schultz of Beaver Dam, while veteran driver Danny Schlafer of Sussex scored a convincing victory in the rain-shortened 20-lap PDTR Sprint Car A main.

With light rain falling, polesitter Scotty Thiel of Sheboygan led the 24-car field to the green flag in the IRA A main. Utilizing the preferred outside groove, Kyle Marten bolted into the lead in turn two of the opening lap with Thiel in tow.

Meanwhile, seven-time IRA champion and all-time series A-main win leader Bill Balog of Hartland used an impressive start to launch his potent Rhine Auto backed machine into fifth place on lap 2 from his eighth starting spot.

On lap 5, Marten began to encounter heavy lapped traffic, which allowed Thiel to close the gap. Working through a sea of lapped cars, the action at the front of field heated up considerably, as Marten, Thiel and third starter Jeremy Schultz sliced and diced through slower cars while also battling hard for position.

On lap 6, Schultz dove under Thiel briefly to gain the runner-up spot, but Thiel charged back to rain the position with a high move in turn 1 on lap 8.

On lap later, Thiel got and big run along the low groove to briefly slip past Marten for the top spot. However, Marten stormed back into the lead on lap 10 bringing Schultz along into second.

On lap 12, Balog worked his way up to challenge Thiel for third as the two talented racers dueled side by side over the next lap. Disaster struck on lap 13 as Dennis Spitz of Lewisburg, Kentucky spun in turn four while collecting both Balog and Thiel to trigger the first and only caution flag of the race.

Balog suffered heavy front end damage and was forced to retire from the race. Spitz also exited, while Thiel was able to restart the race in the 17th position.

Marten flexed his muscle on the restart to build up a half straightaway cushion over Schultz with sixth starter Jake Blackhurst of Mapleton, Ill. running third.

Starting on lap 16, Marten sliced his way through lapped traffic with relative ease making all the right moves. Marten encountered several slower cars racing side by side for position in the closing laps, which again allowed Schultz to close

On lap 23, Schultz pulled up to Marten’s tail tank and continued to hound Marten over the final seven laps. Despite a late run from Schultz, Marten held on to post his third career IRA A-main victory and first of the 2017 season.

Schultz, who came into the event as the winner of the previous two IRA A-mains at The Plymouth Dirt Track, had to settle for third, Blackhurst wound up third, seventh starter Mike Kertscher of Plymouth placed fourth and Mike Reinke of Howards Grove moved up from his 10th starting spot to round out the top five.

In the PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main, polesitter Kevin Karnitz of West Bend and outside front row starter Tim Haddy of Waupun dueled for the top spot for the first lap and a half before Haddy surged ahead along the high groove on lap 2.

On lap 4, sixth starter Danny Schlafer made his presence known in a big way as he used a slide job to slip past Karnitz for second. One lap later, the hard-charging Schlafer used nearly the same slide job move to power past Haddy for the top spot.

Four laps later, the two-time PDTR Sprint Car champion caught the back of the field and began to work past lapped cars. Further back, Haddy and Karnitz waged an epic battle for second before Karnitz assumed the position for good in turn two on lap 12.

At the front of the field, it was all Schlafer, who continued to hold down a commanding lead. On lap 20, a caution flag appeared after a steering malfunction sent Ben Schmidt of Howards Grove head on into the turn four wall. Schmidt overcame the very hard impact to climb from his car unscathed.

As safety crews tended to Schmidt’s battered machine, the rain began to fall harder to render the track wet enough to make track conditions unsafe for racing. As a result, the race was deemed complete at the 20-lap mark and the remainder of the racing program was called off.

Schlafer posted his 17th career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory to move into sole possession of second place on the all-time 360 Sprint Car A-main win list at Plymouth. It was also Schlafer’s 45th career Midwest Sprint Car Association A-main victory, which ranks him second on the all-time MSA win list.

Karnitz came home second, Haddy was third, third starter Dick Kaiser was fourth and Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls started and finished fifth.

The B Mod A main was cancelled due to rain.

B main victories went to Dave Uttech of Kenosha in the IRA ranks, while Robbie Pribnow of Lomira won the PDTR Sprint Car B main.

Next week’s PDTR program will be sponsored by Miller Pepsi and feature B Mod driver introductions. Racing will begin at 6 p.m.

Pokorski Motorsports rides up-and-down doubleheader weekend

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 13, 2017 – The first doubleheader weekend of the 2017 Midwest Sprint Car Association schedule yielded decidedly mixed results for Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team Saturday, June 10 at The Plymouth Dirt Track and Sunday, June 11 at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie.

The team pulled into the pit area at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth on Saturday night riding the momentum of an A-main victory in the team’s most recent race on Saturday, May 27.

Back behind the wheel of his 2016 Maxim for the first time since an opening night accident on May 6 sidelined the team’s primary car for two races, Pokorski lined up eighth in the first PDTR Sprint Car heat race.

The West Bend racer wasted no time in gaining some valuable passing points as he bolted past Justin Miller and Chris Clayton to slide into sixth place on the opening lap. Searching for traction on the increasing dry, slick track surface, Pokorski moved into fifth place with a nifty pass of Ryan Mayr on lap 7.

The 25th-year driver was closing rapidly on the fourth-place car of Josh Walter when the checkered flag fell with Pokorski finishing in fifth.

After starting 12th in the extended 30-lap Brian Portschy Memorial Race, Pokorski got caught up in an eight-car incident triggered when race leader Al Schlafer spun in turn two on lap 6.

Pokorski went to the pits to get the car checked over before returning to the track in the 19th position. From there, the 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion put on a driving clinic working his way steadily through the field using a variety of well-executed passes on the slick surface.

Pokorski used a slide job on lap 20 to slip past PDTR Sprint Car points leader Tim Haddy and gain fourth place.

With the majority of the field stuck to the high groove, Pokorski held his position along the outside line to finish fourth behind Jim Melis in third, Kurt Davis in second and race winner Brandon McMullen.

It was Pokorski’s third top-five A-main finish in four events and capped a huge charge from 19th in the running order on lap 6.

“The car was good on Saturday night, but I thought it could have been a little bit better,” Pokorski said. “I think everybody was fighting the race track a little bit, so nobody was perfectly happy with their car.

“I thought we may have sustained some possible front-end damage that I may not have been aware of during the incident in turn one and two, and that’s why I came in and had the crew check it out,” he said. “Overall, I was happy with our result on Saturday night.”

On Sunday night at Angell Park, Pokorski’s fortunes were not nearly as good. After starting eighth in the first Sprint Car heat race, Pokorski passed Ryan Mayr and John Krebsbach in turn one to assume sixth place on the opening lap.

Despite slowing a bit in the closing laps of the 10-lap race, Pokorski held on to post a sixth-place finish, which earned him a 13th place starting spot in the A-main event.

However, the team was forced to scratch from the main event when an engine issue was detected. Despite efforts to fix the problem, the team was unable to return to the track.

“On Sunday night, the car was running fine in hot laps and for the first couple laps of the heat race,” Pokorski said. “I heard the engine tone change, the RPM dropped and the motor got lazy about halfway through the race. I thought we may have an intake gasket or head gasket problem.”

The team had planned to send out the motor for repairs and prepare the backup J&J for competition this Saturday night at Plymouth. However, an interesting discovery in the shop on Monday caused those plans to change.

“We found that a piece in the fuel injection system had come apart,” Pokorski said. “It was very odd to say the least. We already had the engine out of the car when we found the problem. We fixed the issue, put the engine back in and started up the car. We will have the Maxim ready to go again for this Saturday night’s race at Plymouth.”

This Saturday, June 17, Pokorski Motorsports will compete with the PDTR 360 Sprint Cars at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth. The event will also feature the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series. The PDTR B Mod division is also on the card.

Spectator gates will open at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

McMullen, McGrath, Sorce, Green, Bogar score in PDTR action

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 10, 2017 – On a night which honored the memory of one of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing’s most beloved drivers, Brian Portschy, who lost his life in a non-racing accident in August 2013, repeat winners grabbed the spotlight in PDTR competition on a seasonably warm summer evening at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds Saturday, June 10.

In an extended 30-lap A main, Brandon McMullen of Appleton collected his third straight Brian Portschy Memorial Race victory. Mitch McGrath of Waukesha notched his initial triumph of the 2017 campaign in the hotly contested Late Model A main, while Dan Sorce of West Allis (Grand National), Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls (B Mod) and Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie (Micro Sprint) each posted their second A-main victories of the season.

Outside front row starter Al Schlafer of Sussex outpowered polesitter Robbie Pribnow of Lomira to take the lead on the opening lap of the Sprint Car A main, followed by outside second row starter Jim Melis of Glenbeulah.

The first of six caution flags flew on lap 5, when Josh Teunissen of Waldo spun to a stop in turn four. On the restart, Pribnow flexed his muscle with a slide job in turn three, which vaulted him from third place into the lead.

One lap later, Schlafer spun in front of the field to trigger an 8-car incident in turn two. All but one driver, Lance Fassbender of Burnett, returned to the race. Pribnow held down the top spot on the restart as Brandon McMullen, who started fifth, shot past Melis to claim the runner-up spot.

McMullen quickly reeled in Pribnow before executing a perfect slide job in turn one on lap 12 to seize the lead on the highly racy track. However, McMullen’s move was negated when Howards Grove’s Ben Schmidt spun in turn two on lap 12.

Pribnow remained in the lead on the restart as the scoring of the race went back to the previous lap before the caution. However, Pribnow’s car lost power on the restart to prompt the fourth caution flag of the race.

With Pribnow now out of the race, McMullen inherited the lead on the restart with Melis in second. On lap 13, 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champion Kurt Davis of West Allis powered up from his ninth starting spot to pressure Melis for the runner-up spot.

After the fifth caution period for the stalled car of two-time PDTR Sprint Car champ Danny Schlafer of Sussex on the backstretch on lap 15, McMullen continued to show his strength along the preferred outside groove.

The sixth and final caution flag was displayed on lap 21 for an incident in turn one involving Dannon Tessmer of Slinger and Ben Schmidt.

Despite a damaged front wing which affected the handling of his car, Davis mounted a late charge following the final restart to bolt past Melis into second and challenge McMullen for the lead with a low move on lap 23.

However, McMullen fended off Davis’ advances and pulled away over the final five laps to notch his first victory of the 2017, ninth PDTR Sprint Car win and 13th overall Midwest Sprint Car Association triumph of his career.

Davis had to settle for second, Melis was third, 12th starter Paul Pokorski of West Bend raced up to an impressive fourth-place finish after restarting 19th following the lap 6 melee and Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls finished fifth after starting ninth.

The 25-lap Late Model A main produced plenty of close, clean competition as just one caution flag slowed the hot-and-heavy action.

Three-time PDTR Late Model champion and current points leader Brad Mueller of Random Lake took the lead on the drop of the green flag from his outside front row starting spot, while fourth starter Mitch McGrath powered around polesitter Tim Buhler of Greenbush and third starter Justin Schmidt of Cleveland to move into second place on lap 2.

The lone caution flag appeared on lap 3 when Phil Rehberg spun in turn three. Mueller stayed in the lead on the restart while Justin Schmidt and McGrath battled side by side for the runner-up spot as the leaders stayed mainly locked to the faster high groove.

By lap 5, Mueller had built up a half straightaway lead over McGrath. However, lapped traffic proved to be the difference in the race as Mueller had to deal with a dense pack of slower cars beginning on lap 9.

As Mueller trying to find a way around a group of cars racing for position at the rear of the field, McGrath moved within striking distance when Mueller slid high and grazed the front stretch wall on lap 20.

On lap 22, McGrath dove low in turn one and slide up in front of Mueller in turn two to gain the top spot. With McGrath riding the high line, Mueller attempted to battle back along the low groove, but it wasn’t quite enough.

McGrath went on to notch his eighth career PDTR Late Model A-main victory and first of 2017. Mueller took second, Justin Schmidt was third followed by his father, Jim Schmidt of Cleveland in fourth and fifth starter Chris Carlson of Union Grove, who placed fifth.

In the 25-lap Grand National A main polesitter Josh Pierce of Random Lake led the first two laps with second starter J.J. Pagel of Campbellsport, third starter Will Sorce of West Allis and fourth starter Dan Sorce of West Allis battling for second.

The first of five caution flags appeared on lap 2 after Will Sorce and Pagel made contact and collected three more cars in turn three.

On the restart, 2006 PDTR Late Model champion Dan Sorce surged past Pierce into the lead on lap 5. After two more caution periods, Kurt Davis powered up from his sixth starting spot to take second on lap 11. Over the final 14 laps Davis, Will Sorce and fifth starter Matt Loehr of Dotyville battled back and forth for second.

However, out in front it was all Dan Sorce as he cruised to his sixth career PDTR Grand National A-main victory and second A-main win of the 2017 season. Loehr finished second, Will Sorce was third, Davis place fourth and 2011 PDTR Grand National champion Mark Fieber of Cascade charged from the 11th starting spot to finish fifth.

In the curfew-shortened 15-lap B Mod A main, Justin Green led nearly the entire way from the pole position.

After dueling with outside front row starter Gary Glander of Sheboygan throughout most of the opening lap, Green took the lead. On lap 3, Glander battled back to briefly gain control of the top spot.

However, Green regained the lead with the big move in turn four. Meanwhile, fourth starter Chad Vetting of Valders mounted a charge along the high groove into second place on lap four.

After the lone caution flag appeared on lap 5 for the stalled car of Brad Carman of Sheboygan, Green maintained the top spot en route to his second career B Mod A main victory and second win of the 2017 campaign.

Vetting wound up second, Glander was third, 2016 PDTR B Mod champion Brandon Berth of Plymouth was fourth after starting seventh and Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls moved up from his 10th starting spot to finish fifth.

In the 15-lap Micro Sprint A main, polesitter Dave Collins of Madison built up a big half-lap lead over the field in the first 11 laps of the race

However, Collins’ car stopped in turn two on lap 11, which handed the lead over to sixth starter Chad Bogar, who raced to his second PDTR Micro Sprint A-main victory of the 2017 season.

Jack Vanderboom of Dousman placed second after starting fifth, Tyler Davis of West Allis finished third, Tory Strauss of Waterloo took fourth after starting eighth and Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake took fifth.

Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum won the first Sprint Car B Main and Doug Wondra of Lomira claimed the second Sprint Car B Main. J.J. Walvoord won the B Mod B main.

The trophy sponsor for the night was WES Innovations LLC of Wisconsin and Hagar Nelson offered bonus money to drivers in all divisions with his dice roll. The evening also honored all police, fire, EMS and graduates with free admission.

For the fourth time in four events this season the total car count eclipsed the century mark with 102 cars checking into the pit area, including 34 Sprint Cars, 15 Late Models, 21 Grand Nationals, 24 B Mods and 8 Micro Sprints.

Next week’s racing program will feature the first of four appearances at Plymouth by the Interstate Racing Association (IRA) Sprint Car Series. Joining the IRA regional touring drivers, will be the MSA/PDTR 360 Sprint Cars and PDTR B Mods.

Pokorski, Glenz, Fieber, Kretschmann, Strauss nab PDTR triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 27, 2017  – With some long overdue pleasant spring weather conditions greeting racers, crews, fans, sponsors and track workers, four cagey veterans and one newcomer grabbed A-main victories in the third Plymouth Dirt Track Racing program of the 2017 season Saturday, May 27, at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.

For the third consecutive week, a large contingent of 109 cars packed the pit area to compete for the A-main trophies sponsored by Pedal Down Promotions. It was also Military Night with a special pre-race ceremony honoring those who have and continue to serve our country to ensure our daily freedom.

In the 25-lap Sprint Car A main, it was 25-year veteran Paul Pokorski of West Bend recording his first feature victory since August 2015. Newcomer Jesse Glenz of Fall Creek made his first visit to Plymouth count with a flag-to-flag victory in the 25-lap Late Model headliner. Mark Fieber of Cascade survived a wild Grand National A-main to claim the top prize. Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls captured the 25-lap B Mod A-main victory, while Tory Strauss of Waterloo rolled to victory in the Micro Sprint A-main.

The green flag fell in the Sprint Car A main with Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls on the pole and Paul Pokorski on the outside of the front row. Pokorski utilized the preferred outside groove to power into the lead in turn two of the opening lap.

By lap 3, Pokorski had opened a half straightaway advantage over Fiedler. Pokorski, who was the 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion, encountered lapped traffic for the first time on lap 6.

Two laps later, the first caution of the event appeared on lap 8 for the stalled car of Mike Yurmanovich of Cascade in turn three. A red flag was then displayed when fire crews had to attend to situation in the pit area.

When the race resumed, ninth starter Brandon McMullen of Appleton charged up to take third place on lap 9. At the front of the field, Pokorski again built up a solid cushion over Fielder. By lap 15, Pokorski had stretched out a half-lap advantage.

Pokorski, who was involved in an opening night accident which has sidelined his primary 2016 Maxim car, overcame a near spin in turn two in the closing laps to steer his 2011 J&J backup machine to his first A-main victory since Aug. 14, 2015 at the now defunct Manitowoc Expo Speedway.

It was Pokorski’s third career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory and 10th overall feature triumph of his Sprint Car career. Fiedler held on for second, 2008 PDTR Sprint Car Champion Lance Fassbender of Burnett was third, McMullen finished fourth and 10th starter Tim Haddy of Mayville claimed fifth, after starting 10th.

“It was great to get a victory,” Pokorski said. “I had a pretty close call getting sideways there in turn two, but luckily I was able to recover. It was a fast, hammer down track right around the top, which I normally like. Everything worked out well for us tonight.”

Jesse Glenz, who is a regular competitor at Cedar Lake Speedway and Red Cedar Speedway in Western Wisconsin, started on the pole of the Late Model A main next to outside front row starter Justin Schmidt of Cleveland.

Glenz grabbed the lead on the opening lap, as defending PDTR Late Model Champion Tim Buhler of Greenbush moved into second. On lap 5, Schmidt jumped up to the high grove to challenge the low riding Buhler for the runner-up spot. The two hard-charging drivers mounted an epic door panel-to door panel battle for the remainder of the race.

Buhler moved in to briefly challenge Glenz as the leaders moved into slower traffic on lap 8. On lap 12, Schmidt surged past Buhler to take over second. However, two laps later, Buhler regained the spot along the low groove.

Glenz, who was making his PDTR debut, built a half-lap lead by 17 before Charlie Schmidt of Cedar Grove prompted the first yellow flag of the race with a spin in turn three on lap 17.

On the restart, Glenz powered away as Buhler and Schmidt continued their race-long duel. Glenz went on to earn his first career PDTR Late Model A-main victory, followed by Buhler in second. Schmidt settled for third, three-time PDTR Late Model Champion Brad Mueller of Random Lake started and finished fourth and seventh-starter Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha wound up fifth.

“This is our first time here and I really enjoyed it,” Glenz said. “It is a great facility with a lot of cars in the pits and strong fan support. The car ran really well and I’m happy to be in victory lane.”

2010 PDTR Grand National Champion Brian Gilles started the Grand National A-main from the pole flanked by 2011 PDTR Grand National Champ Mark Fieber, who started second. Gilles and Fieber raced side-by-side on opening lap before Fieber gained the advantage in turn two on lap 2.

The first of four caution flags appeared on lap 2 when 2008 PDTR Grand National Champion Matt Yancey of Sheboygan hit the wall in turn two. On the restart, defending PDTR Grand National Champion Brian Cesar of Sheboygan used the high groove to challenge Gilles for the runner-up spot. After two laps of heated action, Gilles and Cesar made contact in turn two, which caused Gilles to drop back to seventh in the running order.

After the second caution appeared on lap 5 debris, Cesar challenged fourth-starter Tyler Kulow of Plymouth for second starting on lap 7. Following four laps racing in side-by-side formation, Kulow gained the upper hand on lap 11. The third caution flag came out on lap 13 for a spin involving Justin Erickson of Plymouth.

After the restart, the action continued to be hot and heavy behind Fieber as a host of drivers jostled for position in close proximity. The final caution appeared on lap 17 for Josh Pierce of Random Lake, who spun in turn two to set up an entertaining eight-lap trophy dash between Fieber, Kulow and Cesar.

Kulow attempted to duck under Fieber for the lead in turn two on lap 20, but contact ensued, which caused Kulow to drop back slightly. Meanwhile Cesar charged hard along the high groove to pull even with the bottom-hugging Fieber on lap 22.

Cesar surged into the lead briefly in turn 2 on lap 23, but Fieber was not to be denied as he turned back under Cesar to regain the lap later in the lap in turn four. Fieber held on to secure his 11th career PDTR A-main victory to move firmly into second place on the all-time PDTR Grand National A-main win list behind Brad Lubach, who has 24.

Cesar was second, Kulow took third, two-time PDTR Grand National Champion Don Sorce Jr. of West Allis place fourth after starting 10th and seventh starter Dan Sorce of West Allis placed fifth.

Polesitter Ken Childre of Milwaukee led the field into turn one on the B Mod A main before third starter Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls moved into the top spot in turn three.

The first of four cautions appeared on lap 3 for a spin involving Craig Gessner of Kewaskum. On the restart seventh starter Cody Eickberg of Plymouth was the drive on the move as he worked the high groove to pass second starter J.J. Walvoord of Oostburg on lap 9 for the runner-up spot.

Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls, who started 11th, also mounted a charge to the front as he assumed third on lap 13. On lap 16, Green used the outside line to pressure Eickberg for second. Green cleared Eickberg for second on lap 17 and quickly set his sights on Kretschmann.

After two more caution periods in the final seven laps, Green had to deal with a hood panel that had flipped up. However, he held on to maintain second at the finish line behind Kretschmann, who notched his second career PDTR B Mod A main victory, Eickberg was third, followed by ninth starter Glenn Blanke of Sheboygan Falls in fourth and Walvoord in fifth.

In the 20-lap Micro Sprint A main, Tory Strauss started from the pole and was never seriously challenged throughout. Defending PDTR Micro Sprint Champion Zach Boden of Cambridge worked his way into second on lap 11, after starting fourth.

Boden appeared poised to challenge Strauss for the top spot before Joe Snow spun and later flipped on lap 16 to bring out the second caution of the race. On the restart Boden fell back to fifth, while 11th starter Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie powered up to second place.

Strauss held on over the final four laps to notch his second career PDTR Micro Sprint A main victory by a half straightaway over Bogar. Matt Perterson, who started second, took third, Dave Collins placed fourth after starting 10th and Boden rounded out the top five.

B main victories went to Tyler Brabant of Waupun (Sprint Car), Steven Weber of Plymouth (Grand National) and Brandon Knepprath of Kewaskum (B Mod).

PDTR racing action will continue next Saturday, June 3, with racing scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. It will be Police, Fire and EMS Night, as well as Graduates Night. All police, fire and EMS personnel, along with graduates will receive free admission with proper ID. Trophies will be sponsored by Pit Stop Pizza.

Wenninger, Schmidt, Loehr, Green, Bogar top PDTR A mains

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 13, 2017 – With spring-like temperatures yielding pleasant spectating conditions and another impressive collection of 108 competitors in the pit area, the second Plymouth Dirt Track racing program of the 2017 season took to the third-mile  Sheboygan County Fairground  track  Saturday, May 13.

The evening’s A main events featured plenty of green-flag action, including some good battles at the front of field. On top of that, two of the five A main events were contested in impressive, caution-free fashion.

In the 25-lap Sprint Car A main, Kewaskum’s Shane Wenninger completed his comeback from a serious back injury last June by capturing his second career PDTR A-main triumph.

Also claiming A-main hardware courtesy of trophy sponsor Cellcom were Jim Schmidt of Cleveland (Late Model), Matt Loehr of Dotyville (Grand National),  Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls (B Mod) and Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie (Micro Sprint).

Lance Fassbender of Burnett led the Sprint Car A main to the green flag from the pole position flanked by outside front row starter Paul Pokorski of West Bend. Fassbender bolted  out to a solid cushion in the early stages of the race, building up a half straightaway lead over Wenninger by lap 5 on the predominately  one-groove racing surface.

As the track began to take rubber, passing came at a very high premium. Fassbender caught up to the rear of the field on lap 8, which made  things quite interesting for several laps as the leaders attempted to find a way by the lapped cars.

With Fassbender boxed in behind slower cars, Wenninger was able to close the gap considerably by lap 10. One lap later, Wenninger managed to dive past Fassbender entering turn one before powering into the lead exiting turn two.

Wenninger, who was steering his own 53 machine after wheeling the 51M Mayer Automotive car normally driven my Jim Melis on opening night, maintained control  as he worked through heavy  lapped traffic. On lap 14,  the first caution of the race came out when Cascade’s Mitchell Yurmanovich and Robbie Pribnow of Lomira made contact in turn three.

After the restart,  Wenninger maintained control and was just about to enter lapped traffic again when the second caution flag appeared on lap 18 for  Fassbender, who slowed to a stop on the backstretch. After exiting to make repairs in the pits, Fassbender was able to rejoin the race at the rear of the field.

Wenninger, who missed most of the 2016 racing season after breaking two vertebrae in his back in an accident on June 11, held on over the final seven laps to record his second career PDTR Sprint Car A main victory over Brandon McMullen of Appleton, who placed second after starting sixth.

Pokorski wound up third, opening night A-main winner Tim Haddy of Waupun charged from the 11th starting spot to take fourth and 14th starter Kurt Davis of West Allis placed fifth.

Outside front row starter Chris Carlson of  North Cape grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap Late Model A main followed by polesitter Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan, who is marking his 40th year of racing in 2017.

Carlson wasted no time building up a solid lead over Markwardt by lap 4. On lap 7, Jim Schmidt, who started third, moved in to take second place from Markwardt.

Three laps later, Schmidt closed in on Carlson and began to apply heavy pressure for the top spot. Schmidt worked the high side of the track to pull off the winning move in turn  four on lap 13.

Once ahead, Schmidt would not be denied as he sliced his way skillfully through lapped traffic en route to his 10th career PDTR Late Model A main victory in the caution-free race.

Defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler placed second after starting fifth, 2014 PDTR Late Model champ Mitch McGrath came up from his eighth starting position to take third, Carlson wound up fourth and after capturing the  opening night A-main victory and three-time PDTR Late  Model  champion Brad Mueller placed fifth after starting 11th.

Outside front row starter Matt Loehr seized the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap Grand National A main with third starter and 2011 PDTR Grand National champion Mark Fieber of Cascade falling in line in second.

The first caution of the race appeared on lap 7 when  polesitter Steven Weber of Plymouth suffered a flat right rear tire. When the race returned  to green  flag action, Loehr held a solid lead over Fieber as 2010 PDTR Grand National champ Brian Gilles of Plymouth moved in from his sixth starting spot to pressure Fieber for the runner-up position.

The second  and final caution of  the race  appeared on lap 13 when Justin Erickson of  Plymouth  spun in turn three. On lap 15, Fieber pulled in to pressure Loehr and remained within striking distance, but was unable to wrestle the lead away from Loehr in the closing laps.

Loehr rolled on to his fourth career PDTR Grand National A-main triumph. Fieber had to settle for second, Gilles placed third, Tyler Kulow of Plymouth moved up from  the eighth starting spot to finish fourth and fourth starter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth finished fifth.

Polesitter Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag of the B Mod A main. On lap 2, third starter Cody Eickberg of  Plymouth slipped past Mark Hoeppnar to take second.

Eickberg quickly reeled in Kretschmann and appeared ready to strike when the first of four caution flags appeared on lap 5 for a spin in turn two involving Jonathan Singer. On the restart,  Kretschmann spun in turn two while leading, which gave the top spot over to Eickberg on the ensuing restart.

When the race returned to green flag action, Green, who started seventh, began to make his presence felt in a big way. Green started to pressure fifth starter Brandon Berth of Cascade for second place beginning on lap 7. Green and Berth battled side by side until the third caution appeared on lap 8 when Brad Carman spun in turn two.

The duel between Green and Berth raged on until Green finally inched ahead in turn one on lap 12. Green then set his sights on Eickberg, ducking low in turn  one on lap 14 and emerging with the lead later in the lap in turn four. However, Eickberg would not back down and held tough on the high line as the two dueled side by side over the next two laps.

Green finally surged ahead  for good on lap 16 before the final caution flag flew on lap 17 for a spin involving Glen Blanke of Sheboygan Falls and opening night A-main winner Chad Vetting of Valders exiting turn four. Blahnke accepted responsibility for causing the accident, which placed him at the rear of the field and allowed Vetting to keep his spot in the top five.

Green held on over the final eight laps to secure his first career B Mod A main victory. Eickberg held on for second, Berth took third, Vetting placed fourth after starting 11th and Elijah Koenig of Beaver Dam finished fifth after starting sixth.

Outside front row starter Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie cruised to a flag-to-flag victory in the non-stop 15-lap Micro Sprint A Main.

Defending PDTR Micro Sprint Champion Zach Boden of Madison took second, followed by fourth starter Tory Strauss of Waterloo in third, polesitter Denver Larsen of Shiocton in fourth and seventh starter Dylan Larsen of Shiocton in fifth.

Butch Hafemann of Cambpellsport won the special Wingless Super Modified A  main. B main victories went to Justin Miller of Plymouth (Sprint Car), Will Sorce of Franklin (Grand National) and Craig Gessner of Beechwood (B Mod

PDTR racing action will continue next Saturday, May 20, with racing schedule to begin at 6 p.m. The evening will honor all police, fire and EMT personnel with free admission to all personnel showing a credential.

Mueller, Haddy, Sorce, Vetting, Larsen score in PDTR opener

Cold weather doesn’t deter huge car count

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 6, 2017 – A huge field of 109 cars and a hearty contingent of race-starved fans braved blustery weather conditions to ring in the 13th season of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing (PDTR) action at The Plymouth Dirt Track at Sheboygan County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 6.

For most competitors, the night marked the first opportunity to test their prized, finely-tuned machines after a long winter of preparation. On average, the results were expectedly uneven as all opening nights tend to be. Some drivers hit on all cylinders right out of the box, while worked through a bit of rust and a few first-night jitters.

At the end of the night, there were plenty of pleased race teams in the pit area, while a handful of others left the track with some work to do before strapping in for week two.

In the Late Model headliner, three-time PDTR champion Brad Mueller kicked off his 30th season of racing in grand style by capturing the 25-lap A main. Waupun’s Tim Haddy, who is marking his 25th season of racing this year, led flag-to-flag to claim the 25-lap Sprint Car A-Main, while Dan Sorce of West Allis (Grand National), Chad Vetting of Valders (B Mod) and Shiocton’s Denver Larsen (Micro Sprint) also opened the season with A main victories.

After an aborted start, polesitter Charlie Schmidt of Cedar Grove grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag of the Late Model main event with third-starter Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan trailing in second and defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler of Greenbush, who started fourth, moving into third.

As Markwardt began to reel in Schmidt, Mueller moved up from the seventh starting spot to work his way past Buhler into third place. Mueller then set his sights on Markwardt, quickly reeling in the 40-year veteran and executing a low move in turn one on lap 10 to assume the runner-up spot.

Meanwhile, Cleveland’s Justin Schmidt was making a similar charge to the front from his 12th starting position. On lap 11, Schmidt claimed third in the running order and began closing in the lead two of Mueller and Charlie Schmidt.

On lap 15, Mueller ducked underneath Charlie Schmidt in turn four to gain the top spot. Close behind, the Schmidts (Justin and Charlie) engaged in a short duel for second place before Justin prevailed to move into second place in turn two on lap 18.

The leaders approached heavy lapped traffic on lap 20, which made things challenging for Mueller and Justin Schmidt, but both drivers worked skillfully through the slower cars.

Sporting a throwback 1991 paint scheme for his 30th season, Mueller went on to post his 17th career PDTR Late Model A main victory in the non-stop, caution-free race over Justin Schmidt, who had to settle for second. Charlie Schmidt came home third, followed by fifth-starter Rick Scheffler of Waukesha in fourth and Buhler in fifth.

“This is a brand-new car and the first night for me in the car, so it was a little up in the air as to how we would be tonight,” Mueller said in victory lane. “Since we had nothing to go by with this car, we went back to our book and used some of our old knowledge to find some speed.

“It was a really nice track for us tonight,” he said. “It was a very smooth track, which usually is good for Late Models. The quality of the track showed tonight with no cautions for us. All of the Late Model guys did good job.”

The 25-lap Sprint Car A main got off to a rocky start as Andrew Westphal of Fond du Lac got sideways and flipped in turn three on the opening lap before collecting Paul Pokorski of West Bend. Both cars suffered heavy damage in the incident and retired to the pit area.

On the drop of the green flag, Tim Haddy outpowered outside front-row starter Brandon McMullen of Appleton to lead the opening lap. McMullen held tight with Haddy throughout most the race, following Haddy’s wheel tracks in close quarters on the predominately one-groove surface.

As the leaders encountered lapped traffic on lap 11, McMullen moved in to look under Haddy on a couple of occasions by the 25-year vet did not budge from his line, refusing to give McMullen an opening to pounce.

On lap 22, fifth-starter Justin Miller of Plymouth slipped past two-time PDTR Sprint Car champion Danny Schlafer of Sussex, who started fourth, to gain third.

Haddy held strong as the leaders approaches slower traffic in the closing laps to nip McMullen at the finish line to record his sixth career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory and 18th career A main triumph in Midwest Sprint Car Association competition. McMullen finished second, followed by Miller in third, Schlafer fourth and 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champ Kurt Davis of West Allis fifth.

The scheduled 25-lap Grand National A main was limited to 18 laps as six caution flags pushed the race past the time limit.

The race was controlled throughout by polesitter Dan Sorce of West Allis, who held off the valiant attempts third starter Kurt Davis for the entire race. Tyler Kulow of Plymouth charged from the 18th starting spot to place third, followed by St. Peter’s Tim Simon, who started 11th, in fourth and outside front row starter Matt Jackson of Sheboygan in fifth.

Likewise, the scheduled 25-lap B Mod A main completed just nine laps following four caution flags.

Chad Vetting, who started fourth, took over the lead on lap two and never looked back en route to his first B Mod victory in PDTR competition.

Brandon Knepprath of Kewaskum notched a strong runner-up showing from his outside front row starting spot, defending PDTR B Mod champ Brandon Berth of Plymouth took third, followed by J.J. Walvoord, who started sixth, in fourth and Brian Bruechert of Kewaunee, who placed fifth after starting 11th

Denver Larsen prevailed in the non-stop Micro Sprint A main to notch his first career PDTR A main triumph.

Larsen, who started third, engaged in an intense side-by-side battle with Dylan Larsen to take over second place on lap 5. Denver Larsen then started to close on outside front row starter Tory Strauss, who had led from the drop of the green flag.

However, Strauss slowed and retired to the infield on lap 12 to relinquish the lead to Denver Larsen, who then cruised to the victory.

Emily Portschy of Plymouth place second, followed by Preston Ruh (third), Tyler Davis (fourth) and Strauss fifth.

B main victories went to Dannon Tessmer (Sprint Car), Dick Hed of Plymouth (Grand National) and Patrick Hanson (B Mod).
