(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) November 1, 2017  – Aided by a strong surge of consistent showings over the second half of the 2017 racing campaign, the silver anniversary season for Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team was filled several memorable performances.

The team’s 25th season of racing competition got off to an inauspicious start on May 6, as an opening-lap accident in the first Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car A main of the season relegated Pokorski to a 22nd-place finish.

The incident also knocked the team’s primary 2016 Maxim out of commission for the next two races, prompting Pokorski to turn to his trusty 2011 J&J backup car.

“Crashing on opening night was rough for us,” Pokorski said. “We had to take the rear end of the car apart to get the frame fixed.”

After notching a third-place A-main showing at Plymouth on May 13, Pokorski notched his 10th career 360 Sprint Car A-main victory in flag-to-flag fashion on Pedal Down Promotions Night at The Plymouth Dirt Track on May 27.

It was also Pokorski’s first A-main victory since Aug. 14, 2015 at the now defunct Manitowoc Expo Speedway, as well as the 45th overall A-main victory of his 25-year open-wheel racing career (35 Winged Super Modified, 10 360 Sprint Car).

“Winning the A-main at Plymouth on Pedal Down Promotions Night, which is one of our key supporters, was a big highlight for us,” Pokorski said.

The team returned to Plymouth for the Brian Portschy Memorial Race on June 10 with its newly repaired Maxim and promptly racked up an impressive fourth-place finish in the A main, after an early incident forced Pokorski to restart the race 19th on lap 6.

The following night at Angell Park in Sun Prairie saw the team encounter a magneto issue, which kept it from competing in the A main.

“We had mag trouble during our first visit to Sun Prairie, which forced us to miss running the A main,” Pokorski said. “The troubles we had on opening night at Plymouth and in the first race at Angell Park really hurt our overall points result for the season.”

The mag issue lingered into the following Saturday at Plymouth, which forced the team to scratch from the entire program after hot laps.

Another highlight of the season came in the team’s next event at Spring Lake Speedway in Unity on June 23, which drew a standing-room-only crowd and a stellar field of 27 cars for the first Midwest Sprint Car Association event at the track since 2004.

Pokorski turned in an 11th place showing with the team’s J&J backup car at Spring Lake before more bad luck plagued the team the following night at Plymouth when an incident in the A-main ended the team’s night with a 20th-place finish.

After searching for a consistent setup during most of the month of July, Pokorski racked up a second-place A-main showing at Plymouth on July 29 to ignite a string of strong finishes to close out the season.

Pokorski closed out a streak of five consecutive top-10 A-main showings with a 10th-place finish at Angell Park on Aug. 13. Misfortune struck again at Plymouth on Aug. 19 when Pokorski got caught up in a five-car incident just yards front the finish line while dueling for position just outside of the top five. The accident relegated the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion to a 17th-place finish.

Pokorski came back to tally an eighth-place showing in A-main action at Plymouth on Sept. 9 and capped the 2017 campaign with a strong fourth-place finish in the PDTR and MSA season finale at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Sept. 30.

In 21 PDTR/MSA events, Pokorski posted one A-main victory (May 27), two heat race wins, six top-five A-main finishes and 12 top-10 A-main showings.

Pokorski also placed seventh overall in the Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) standings and wound up ninth in the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car points race.

“Getting at least one A-main win is always a goal and we got that pretty early on,” Pokorski said. “That was good, but I would have liked to have gotten at least one more. Overall, our season points finish was a little disappointing.”

Even in his 25th season of competition, Pokorski said he still found himself learning new things at the track.

“Shock technology has really changed a lot over the last 10 years or so and we are always learning,” Pokorski said. “Scotty Neitzel at R&H racing helped us take another step forward with that this year. I think our dry slick set ups have come a long way because of it. The change is so significant that I’ve had to change my driving style a bit, which I’m still working on.”

With 2017 now in the rearview mirror, Pokorski and his crew are firmly focused on 2018 with the off-season maintenance program already well under way.

“It took some effort to repair things and some expense to replace what couldn’t be fixed this season,” Pokorski said. “We will spend the off season making sure we are better prepared in some weak spots. It’s a never-ending process of learning from mistakes.

“I felt we were getting better at the end of the year,” he said. “Everyone else seems to be improving as well, so we’ll have to keep working and not settle. We are hoping to build off what we learned near the end of 2017 and start strong instead of behind the 8 ball like we did this year.”

Pokorski acknowledged the efforts of his 2017 Pokorski Motorsports pit crew, including crew chief Dave Schultz, Randy Leamer, Dan Hoerig, Ian Schultz, Aaron Pederson, Alex Pokorski, Lynn Pokorski, Heather Pokorski, Sheila Leamer, Chuck Tuschl, Karin Tuschl and Melissa Schultz.

“I want to thank Dave Schultz, who’s always there to help,” Pokorski said. “Ian Schultz and Aaron Pederson have been fun to work with. They are two young men who will hopefully stay involved in the sport for a long time. I also want to thank by mom [Karin Tuschl] and stepdad [Chuck Tuschl] for their never-ending support, as well as Randy and Sheila Leamer for their help in the pits. I really have to thank my wife, Lynn, and my kids, Alex and Heather, for their help in the pits and throughout the year to support me in what I love to do.”

The Pokorski Motorsports sponsors for the 2017 season include: Acme Armature Works Inc., Goeden’s Auto Body, Goodwin Racing Engines, Jens, Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Services & Crematory, Kettle Moraine Landscaping, Novak’s Service Center, Pedal Down Promotions, Christel Sign, Tisler Salvage Inc. and The Cawley Company.

“I really appreciate the support of our sponsors again this year,” Pokorski said. “Several of our sponsors have been with us for many years and their support is greatly appreciated. I also want to give a special ‘thank you’ to Acme Armature Works, who just joined us this year.”

Pokorski Motorsports is currently seeking sponsors for the 2018 season. For more information, on how to become involved in Pokorski Motorsports, contact Paul Pokorski at Pokorski4@gmail.com.

Pokorski Motorsports closes out 25th anniversary season on high note

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) October 4, 2017 – Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team completed their 25th season of competition with a strong fourth-place A-main showing in the 2017 Plymouth Dirt Track Racing and Midwest Sprint Car Association 360 Sprint Car finale Saturday, Sept. 30, at The Plymouth Dirt Track on the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.

With a stellar field of 33 PDTR/MSA 360 Sprint Cars signed in, Pokorski lined up on the outside of the front row of the second PDTR/MSA heat race. The 2014 MSA Masters Series champion outpowered polesitter Chris Clayton to seize the lead in turn two of the opening circuit.

Pokorski then proceeded to open up a half-straightaway cushion over Clayton, which he maintained throughout the 10-lap event en route to his second heat race victory of the 2017 season.

The impressive heat race run gave Pokorski the third starting spot in the PDTR-MSA A-main with former PDTR-MSA champions Kurt Davis and Danny Schlafer lined up ahead of him on the front row and newly crowned 2017 PDTR 360 Sprint Car champion Brandon McMullen to his right in the fourth starting position.

Pokorski was running fourth behind Davis, Schlafer and McMullen when the first caution flag of the race flew on lap 4,. On the ensuing restart, Davis and Schlafer collided in turn two to bring out another caution, which relegated both drivers to the rear of the field.

After restarting second, Pokorski dropped to fourth when Ben Schmidt and Kevin Karnitz both slipped by before Dick Kaiser mounted a charge to work past Pokorski two laps later. The West Bend driver spent the majority of the race locked in a duel with Justin Miller for fifth place.

As the laps wound down, Pokorski found his groove on the dry, slick track to hold off Miller for the position. With two laps to go, Pokorski reeled in Dick Kaiser to take over fourth place in the running order.

Pokorski then held on secure his sixth top-five A-main finish of the season as Brandon McMullen claimed the victory to wrap up the 2017 PDTR 360 Sprint Car title and his third straight MSA championship.

The car was just about perfect in the heat race,” Pokorski said. “We tweaked a few things for the main, but didn’t tighten it up enough. We were afraid the track would take rubber earlier and we didn’t want to go too far.”

After being hampered by bad luck and mechanical gremlins during first few months of the year, which forced him to race the team’s backup car in several events, Pokorski rallied over the second half of the season to place ninth in the PDTR 360 Sprint Car point standings and seventh in the MSA points rundown.

In 21 PDTR/MSA events, Pokorski posted one A-main victory (May 27), two heat race wins, six top-five A-main finishes and 12 top-10 A-main showings.

I’m happy with the way the second half of the season went,” Pokorski said. “We’ve been running well lately, and I’m really sorry that the end of the season is here. I can’t wait for next year. We don’t have any major changes planned. Our goal is to work hard and be as prepared as possible.”

The Pokorski Motorsports sponsors for the 2017 season include: Acme Armature Works Inc., Goeden’s Auto Body, Goodwin Racing Engines, Jens, Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Services & Crematory, Kettle Moraine Landscaping, Novak’s Service Center, Pedal Down Promotions, Christel Sign, Tisler Salvage Inc. and The Cawley Company.

McMullen caps PDTR 360 Sprint Car title with A-main win

Balog, Schenck, Neau notch victories in all-Sprint Car finale

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 30, 2017 – Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh closed out his first career Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car championship in grand style by claiming his fourth A-main triumph of the season in the 2017 PDTR finale before a capacity crowd at The Plymouth Dirt Track on the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth Saturday, Sept. 30.

In the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series headliner Bill Balog of Hartland collected his 13th A-main victory of the season en route to his eighth career IRA championship. Doug Schenck of Cottage Grove notched his eighth Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Car Series A-main triumph of the 2017 season and Mike Neau of Kenosha captured the Wisconsin-Illinois Mini Sprint Association A-main win.

The PDTR 360 Sprint Car A-main featured some of the best wheel-to-wheel action of the night up in the front of the pack and throughout the field. 2010 PDTR 360 Sprint Car champ Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee got the initial jump to lead the opening lap of the 25-lap event from the pole position.

As Davis worked the low groove at the head of the pack, two-time PDTR 360 Sprint Car champion Danny Schlafer, who started second, ran the high groove in an attempt to track down the leader.

Meanwhile, the fourthfourt-starting McMullen worked around third starter Paul Pokorski of West Bend to seize third on lap 3. After a caution flag slowed the pace one lap later, McMullen got a big jump along the outside groove on the ensuing restart to challenge Davis and Schlafer for the top two spots.

However, Davis and Schlafer collided entering turn one, which resulted in the two winningest drivers in Midwest Sprint Car Association history sliding into the turn two wall where they collected eighth starter Jim Melis of Glenbeulah, who had been running fifth in the early stages of the race.

With three of the top-five cars eliminated from contention for the victory, McMullen inherited the lead on the ensuing restart, followed by Pokorski and 2011 PDTR 360 Sprint Car champion Ben Schmidt of Howards Grove, who started 12th.

Schmidt got a huge run on the restart to bolt underneath McMullen in turn one on lap 5 to gain the top spot. Schmidt maintained a slight edge over McMullen over the next five laps until the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic.

On lap 11, McMullen used the slower traffic to his benefit as he dove low to sneak past Schmidt in turn two on lap 13. Schmidt battled back to regain the top spot in turn two on lap 14, but McMullen used an aggressive line around the high groove to wrestle the lead away from Schmidt again on lap 17.

Schmidt remained within striking distance, while fifth starter Kevin Karnitz of West Bend powered in to slip past Schmidt on lap 22 and gain the runner-up spot. Out in front of the field it all McMullen, as he rolled to his 12th career PDTR 360 Sprint Car A-main victory and 17th career triumph of his Midwest Sprint Car Association career.

Along with the PDTR championship, the eighth-year 360 Sprint Car driver nailed down his third consecutive MSA title. Karnitz finished a strong second, Schmidt was third, Pokorski wound up fourth and 11th starter Justin Miller of Plymouth came home fifth.

“I’m so proud of my family-operated team, including everyone on the crew that helps to get the car ready to run well every week and all of our sponsors that make it possible to do this for an entire season,” McMullen said. “It’s been a great year. I couldn’t be happier.”

In addition to his stellar effort in the PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main, McMullen was also a key player in the 30-lap IRA 410 Sprint Car Series A main, as he started on the pole and lead the opening two circuits behind the wheel of the Bob Hood-owned 10W machine.

After McMullen outpowered outside front row starter Billy Hafemann of Cedar Grove to take the initial lead, the first of three caution flags appeared on lap 2 when Steve Meyer of Sheboygan Falls spun exiting turn two. On the restart, fourth starter Justin Henderson of Tea, South Dakota charged hard into turn three to slide past McMullen and into the lead exiting turn four on lap 3.

Two laps later, Bill Balog, who started 10th, used the high groove to move into second place on lap 6. As Henderson began to encounter lapped traffic, the hard-charging Balog swiftly reeled in the leader. On lap 11, Balog ducked low to pull even with Henderson entering turn one.

One lap later, Balog powered around Henderson along the extreme outside groove to take the top spot on lap 12. Balog wasted no time in building up a big full straightaway cushion over Henderson by lap 14.

Fifth starter Scotty Thiel of Sheboygan reeled in Henderson on lap 20 and began to apply pressure for the runner-up spot. The third caution flag of the race appeared on lap 23 when Hafemann spun to a stop in turn two.

After the restarter, Balog bolted away to a half straightaway edge over Henderson, while two-time IRA champion Scotty Neitzel of Beaver Dam and 2016 IRA champ Jeremy Schultz of Beaver Dam each worked their way into the top five.

Balog cruised over the final five laps to notch his 101st career IRA A-main victory and successfully seal his eighth IRA 410 Sprint Car Series title.

“The car felt really good tonight and we were fortunate to do the right things to it for the main event to get it to victory lane,” Balog said. “Things haven’t been too great for us over the past couple of weeks, so it is very nice to get this win here tonight. It feels great to win this title with the IRA. I have to thank everyone that helps to make this team successfully, including family, crew members and sponsors. This championship was one of the harder ones because Thiel was there the whole time.”

Henderson was pleased with the quality of his car, but expressed disappointment that he was unable to carry his early momentum throughout the entire race.

“We got to running really good on the top at the start of the race, but we just seemed to slow down when we got up to the lapped cars,” Henderson said. “The crew had the car really nice for me tonight. I just didn’t get the job done.”

Thiel was satisfied with a podium finish and with his strong runner-up finish to Balog in the final IRA point standings.

“All in all, it was a good year, although I really wanted to get a win tonight,” Thiel said. “It’s certainly not too bad when you are able to end the night up on the podium with the 17B [Balog] and 83 [Henderson].”

Jimmy Sivia of Winthrop Harbor, Ill., who started on the outside of the front row, got the jump on polesitter Allen Hafford of Beach Park, Ill. to lead the first lap of the 20-lap Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Car A main.

On lap 6, Hafford used a nifty low move in turn one to seize the top spot from Sivia, while fourth starter Derek Crane of Waukegan, Ill. worked past third starter Doug Schenck and Sivia to move into second place.

The lone caution of the race appeared on lap 14 for a spin in turn two. On the restart, Schenck began to flex his muscle as he ventured the high groove to power around both Crane and Hafford with a huge run in turns three and fourth on lap 17 to gain the lead entering turn one on lap 18.

Schenck then pulled away to secure his eighth Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Car A-main victory of the 2017 season. Hafford had to settle for second, Crane was third, Tim Cox of Park City, Ill. was fourth after starting sixth and Ryan Zielski of Oconomowoc placed fifth after starting fourth.

Jordan Mattson of Milwaukee finished the season as the 2017 Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Car champion.

Polesitter Mike Neau led from the drop of the green flag of the 20-lap Wisconsin-Illinois Mini Sprint Association A-main over outside front row starter Nick Daywalt of Slinger.

Daywalt kept Neau in sight throughout the 20-lap event, but was unable to pull off a pass. Neau held on to pot a three-car-length victory over Daywalt, who secured the 2017 Wisconsin-Illinois Mini Sprint Association title. Derek Fortier finished third after starting fourth, Ron Brannam placed fourth after starting fifth and Kyle Daywalt of Germantown wound up fifth after starting sixth.

JDL Auto and Detailing of Plymouth was the evening’s trophy sponsor.

Pokorski Motorsports racks up 11th top-10 finish

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 13, 2017 – After rain washed out the previous two weekends of racing, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team eagerly returned to action last Saturday, Sept. 9 at The Plymouth Dirt Track.

With a stout field of 29 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars signed in for the evening, Pokorski drew the sixth starting position in the third PDTR 360 Sprint Car heat race. Pokorski was strong from the start of the third heat race, working past three cars over the course of the 10-lap event to post a third-place showing and claim a spot in the 25-lap A-main event.

Following the invert, Pokorski lined up fourth in the 25-lap PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main. The 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion ran in the third position in the early going utilizing the high line of the smooth, slick, multi-groove racing surface.

As the race progressed, Pokorski struggled to find speed exiting the corners. He eventually placed eighth in the final running order in a race won by Justin Miller. It was Pokorski’s 11th top-10 finish of the 2017 season.

The car felt really good all night,” Pokorski said. “I’m not sure what we were lacking in the feature, but we were getting beat on the corner exit.”

Just one race remains on the 2017 schedule for the Pokorski Motorsports team on Saturday, Sept. 30, at The Plymouth Dirt Track. The event will cap the 2017 point series for both the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car division and Midwest Sprint Car Association.

Heading into the final race of the season, Pokorski sits 9th in the PDTR Sprint Car point standings and 7th in MSA points.

I’m not ready for the season to be over yet, but it should be a great show on September 30th,” Pokorski said. “I’m a little disappointed with where we are sitting in the point standings, but we had an A-main win and some fun along the way this year. No matter what, we will be fired up to do it all again next year.”

Along with the PDTR/MSA 360 Sprint Cars, the final race of the 2017 season at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, Sept. 30 will also feature the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Cars, Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Cars and Wisconsin-Illinois Mini Sprints. Mueller, Fieber, Green, Ruh nail down PDTR titles

Miller posts first career PDTR Sprint Car A-main win

By Jeff Pederson, Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 9, 2017 – On a night when four of the five regular Plymouth Dirt Track Racing divisions crowned 2017 champions at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds third-mile clay oval, one of the biggest turnouts of cars and fans of the season gathered to join in the festivities Saturday, Sept. 9.

In the Late Model division, 30-year veteran Brad Mueller of Random Lake claimed his third A-main victory of the 2017 campaign and his fourth career PDTR Late Model title. Cascade’s Mark Fieber racked up his second career title in the Grand National division. Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls collected his first career B Mod championship and rookie Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake secured the Micro Sprint crown.

In main event action, Plymouth’s Justin Miller held off a hard charge from two-time PDTR Sprint Car champion Danny Schlafer of Sussex to earn his first career 25-lap Sprint Car A-main victory at Plymouth. Tyler Kulow of Plymouth notched his first PDTR Grand National A-main victory of the 2017 season in the 25-lap A main. Jared Siefert of Luxemburg raced to his first PDTR B Mod triumph of the season, while Zach Boden of Cambridge captured his third 15-lap Micro Sprint A-main victory of the 20017 PDTR campaign.

Polesitter Justin Miller grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap Sprint Car A main with 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champ Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee, who started on the outside of the front row, following in second.

On lap 4, Davis closed in to challenge Miller along the high groove. Two laps later, 2008 PDTR Sprint Car champ Lance Fassbender spun in turn two while running third, which brought out the first caution flag of the race.

With Miller running the high groove, Davis worked the middle to low lanes in an attempt to oust the lead from Miller when green flag action resumed. On lap 12, Davis attempted to slide past Miller in turn two, but Miller held strong to retain the lead.

The action really heated up two laps later when seventh starter Danny Schlafer joined the duel for the lead. With Miller sticking to the top, Davis running the middle and Schlafer working the low line, the three drivers raced three-wide on lap 17 with Miller holding the slightest of advantages over the two most successful drivers in the history of the Midwest Sprint Car Association.

On lap 18, Davis worked past Miller exiting turn two to seize the lead. However, Davis got very high in turn three and clipped the wall in turn four to bring out the second caution of the race and end his chance at victory.

Miller regained the lead on the restart with Schlafer trailing in second. Miller got a good job on the restart to pull out to a quarter straightaway cushion before Schlafer battled back to mount a late charge. The hard-charging Schlafer slipped past Miller along the inside lane to seize the lead on lap 24.

However, Miller pulled off a big power move on the cushion in turns one and two to regain the lead on the final lap and nip Schlafer by one car length at the finish line to register his first career PDTR Sprint Car main event victory and his second overall MSA A-main triumph.

Schlafer had to settle for second, eighth starter Jim Melis of Glenbeulah finished third, fifth starter Ben Schmidt of Howards Grove placed fourth and Kevin Karnitz of West Bend, who started sixth, placed fifth.

With extra money added to the Late Model A-main purse for the evening, courtesy of an effort led by Late Model supporters Chad Marquardt and Greg Wester, a strong field of 28 Late Models checked into the pit area with 22 lining up for the main event.

Outside front row starter Billy Rezutek of Big Bend grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag ahead of polesitter Joe Reuter of Green Bay. On lap 3, Brad Mueller, who started fourth, worked around Reuter to take over second while sixth starter Chris Carlson of Union Grove gained third on lap 5.

With Rezutek running the extreme high groove, Mueller found grip in the middle of the wide, slick track surface to pull even with Rezutek on lap 8. After a brief side-by-side duel, Mueller assumed the top spot on lap 9.

Carlson then moved in to battle Rezutek for second place on lap 14 before taking over the runner-up position one lap later. However, Mueller was not to be denied at the head of the field as he rolled to his third A-main victory of the season and 19th career PDTR Late Model A-main triumph by five car lengths over Carlson to secure his fourth career PDTR Late Model championship.

Carlson was second, Reuter placed third, third starter Jared Siefert of Luxemburg placed fourth and eighth starter Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha rounded out the top five in the caution-free race.

Polesitter Tyler Kulow assumed the lead on the drop of the green flag in the Grand National main event with 2008 PDTR Grand National champ Matt Yancey trailing in second. The first of four caution flags appeared on lap 2 for a spin involving Matt Jackson of Sheboygan in turn two.

On lap 3, fourth starter Mark Fieber moved past Yancey into second with Dotyville’s Matt Loehr, who started fifth, following into third. With the top three cars running in nose-to-tail fashion along the low groove, Loehr began to apply heavy pressure to Fieber on lap 15 before diving under Fieber to take second on lap 18.

Three consecutive caution periods slowed the race starting on lap 21. When the race resumed, Fieber outpowered Loehr to regain second on lap 22, while seventh starter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth slipped past Loehr to take third.

Meanwhile, Kulow pulled away to claim his second career PDTR Grand National A-main triumph. Fieber secured his second Grand National title by placing second, Lammers was third, Loehr took fourth and Kurt Davis came up for his 10th starting spot to finish fifth.

After two aborted starts, Jared Siefert gained the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap B Mod A main from his outside front row starting position. On lap 4, third starter Chad Vetting of Valders worked past polesitter Gary Glander of Sheboygan Falls to take over second, while Travis Schmidt of Plymouth moved up from the fifth starting position to take over third on lap 8.

Siefert was strong out front as he built up a full straightaway lead over Vetting by lap 12. The third and final caution flag of the event was displayed on lap 18 when John Singer spun in turn four.

Four laps later Schmidt used the high groove to work past Vetting into second place. However, it was all Siefert at the head of the field en route to his first career PDTR B Mod A-main victory.

Schmidt placed second, Vetting was third, Randy Lemieux placed fourth after starting 10th and Glander rounded out the top five.

Chad Bogar of Sun Prairie took the lead in the early going of the 15-lap Micro Sprint A main from the third starting spot. On lap 8, Zach Boden, who started sixth, moved into to challenge Bogar for the lead.

On lap later, Boden executive a low move in turn one to take the lead for good. The 2016 PDTR Micro Sprint champion cruised the rest of the way to a full straightaway victory over Bogar. Jack Vanderboom of Dousman placed third after starting seventh, fifth starting Dave Collins of Madison was fourth and second starter Preston Ruh wrapped up the 2017 PDTR Micro Sprint title with a fifth place showing.

Prior to the racing program, Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan was presented with the PDTR Dedication to Dirt Award for his efforts during a long and successful racing career, which began with Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars at Plymouth in 1977.

During his career, Markwardt racked up two track championships at Plymouth in the Sportsman (1993) and Limited Late Model (1999) divisions and was one of the most popular drivers with fans. Markwardt, who was inducted into the Southeastern Wisconsin Short Track Racing Hall of Fame in 2014, announced his retirement from racing earlier this year with Saturday’s PDTR program serving as his final race.

Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum won the Sprint Car B main, Dave Fieber of Neenah captured the Late Model B main and Steve Lorier of Sheboygan won the B Mod B main.

A total of 111 cars check into the pit area for the evening, including 29 Sprint Cars, 28 Late Models, 24 B Mods, 22 Grand Nationals and 8 Micro Sprints.

After two weekends off, the final race of the season at The Plymouth Dirt Track is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30. The program will feature the final points night for the PDTR 360 Sprint Car division, along with the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car, Wisconsin Wingless Sprint Cars and Wisconsin-Illinois Mini Sprints.

Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with IRA qualifying and racing to follow.

Late misfortune spoils solid run for Pokorski Motorsports

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 23, 2017 – Racing is a sport where a split second can be the deciding factor between a strong finish and a ride on the back of a tow truck, as Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team found out in 360 Sprint Car A-main action at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. Saturday, Aug. 19.

With 25 PDTR Sprint Cars on hand, Pokorski lined up seventh in the second heat race. On the opening lap, the 25-year veteran worked his way past Nich Melis to slip into sixth. Two laps later, Pokorski dove low in turn two to get by Josh Teunissen and secure fifth place.

By virtue of passing points, Pokorski transferred to the A main where he started 12th. After riding in the 13th spot in the first half of the race, the 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion got a good run after a lap 12 restart to sweep past Will Gerrits, John Krebsbach and Chris Clayton and move into 10th on lap 13.

Utilizing the high groove, Pokorski powered around Kevin Karnitz in turn one on lap 21 to assume ninth. Two laps later, the caution flew again when Danny Schlafer and Bill Taylor collided on the backstretch.

After restarting in seventh, Pokorski was dueling for position just outside of the top five when disaster struck in the final turn of the last lap of the race. As several cars jockeyed for position coming to the checkered flag, Pokorski got stuck in a five-car melee coming off of turn four just yards from the finish line.

The accident relegated the team to a 17th-place finish and produced plenty of damaged parts in the process.

The car felt pretty good in the heat race, as well as in the A main,” Pokorski said. “I was pretty happy with the run we were having in the A main and pretty disappointed that it all got messed up in the last corner. A lot of stuff got wrecked, but luckily it doesn’t appear that there is any frame damage. There will be some extra work this week, but we got a good jump on that and we will be ready for next Saturday at Plymouth to try it all over again.”

Only five more races remain on the Pokorski Motorsports 2017 schedule, including four 360 Sprint Car events at The Plymouth Dirt Track.

Pokorski will return to The Plymouth Dirt Track this Saturday, Aug. 26. Racing begins at 6 p.m.

McMullen, Buhler, Cullen, Green, Vanderboom snag PDTR A-main triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 19, 2017 – With only a handful of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing events remaining in the 2017 season at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds, competitors in each division looked to put their best foot forward Saturday, Aug. 19, whether it was to rack up valuable points in the quest for a track championship, earn a coveted A-main victory or to carry positive momentum into the final races of the season.

On PDTR’s annual Race for Cancer Night featuring an appearance by the Pink Heals of Sheboygan County pink fire truck and Project Angel Hugs, Sprint Car point leader Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh posted his third 25-lap Sprint Car A-main victory of the 2017 campaign. Defending PDTR Late Model track champ Tim Buhler of Glenbeulah notched his second PDTR 25-lap Late Model A-main victory of the season, while Jesse Cullen of Chilton earned his first career 25-lap PDTR Grand National A-main triumph. Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls won his sixth B Mod A-main triumph of the season and Jack Vanderboom of Dousman claimed his third PDTR Micro Sprint main event win of 2017.

Polesitter Bill Taylor of Boltonville raced into the lead along the low groove on the opening lap of the Sprint Car A main. On lap 5, Brandon McMullen, who started on the outside of the front row, moved in to challenge Taylor along the high groove. Taylor fended off McMullen’s early challenge before third starter Justin Miller of Plymouth ducked under McMullen to briefly assume second place on lap 10.

The action heated up significantly one lap later when McMullen, Miller and Taylor raced three-wide for the lead heading into turn three. Utilizing the high groove, McMullen blasted into the lead in turn four, while Miller followed into second.

The first caution of the race appeared on lap 12 when Campbellsport’s Tony Wondra stopped on the frontstretch after losing a right rear tire. When the race resumed, McMullen bolted out to a full straightaway cushion over sixth starter Tim Haddy of Waupun by lap 17.

McMullen was cruising to a comfortable victory when the second caution of the event flew just as the field took the white flag for an incident in turn two involving Danny Schlafer of Sussex and Bill Taylor.

The late caution set up a green-white-checkered flag finish and again it was all McMullen at the head of the field as he pulled away to post his 11th career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory and 16th overall career Midwest Sprint Car Association A-main triumph.

McMullen was followed to the finish line by Haddy in second, 11th starter Jim Melis of Glenbeulah placed third, Miller wound up fourth and West Bend’s Kevin Karnitz, who started ninth, finished fifth.

Polesitter Tim Buhler jumped out to the lead on lap 1 of the 25-lap Late Model A main as 2014 PDTR Late Model champ Mitch McGrath of Waukesha ventured up to the high groove to challenge for the top spot. McGrath pounded the cushion, while Buhler held tight to the bottom groove to maintain a quarter-straightaway edge.

The first of four caution flags were displayed on lap 11 for the stalled car of Sheboygan’s Randy Markwardt. When the race resumed, three-time PDTR Late Model champ Brad Mueller of Random Lake used the high line to challenge McGrath for second. The two championship-caliber drivers dueled back and forth until lap 17 when McGrath took command of the runner-up spot.

After two more caution flags on lap 19, McGrath continued to pressure Buhler along the high groove on lap 20. One lap later, Jared Siefert of Luxemburg powered around Mueller to grab third place.

The fourth and final caution for the stalled car of Randy Markwardt on lap 23 set up a two-lap dash to the finish. Despite a valiant effort from McGrath, Siefert and Mueller in the closing laps, Buhler held on to notch his 11th career PDTR Late Model A-main victory. In doing so, Buhler moved into a tie for fourth on the all-time PDTR Late Model A-main win list.

McGrath wound up second, Siefert was third, Mueller took fourth and 2008 PDTR Late Model champion Billy Rezutek placed fifth, after starting ninth.

After the completion of driver introductions, Plymouth’s Travis Schmidt took the initial lead of the extended 30-lap B Mod A main from the pole, while third starter John Rothmund of Manitowoc, who was making his first appearance of the season at the Plymouth track, assumed second from his third starting spot.

As Rothmund ran the high groove, PDTR B Mod point leader Justin Green, who started fifth, worked the low line to seize second place on lap 5. Following a caution for Jonathon Singer’s stalled car in turn 4, Green got a great jump on the ensuing restart to slip under Schmidt in turn four on lap 6.

On lap 8, Rothmund charged past Schmidt into second, but he soon felt pressure from former PDTR Outlaw Compact champion Travis Arenz of Sheboygan in Justin Bauer’s No. 75 car. As Green built up a half straightaway lead, Rothmund and Arenz waged an epic duel for second starting on lap 14.

The fourth caution flag was displayed for Fond du Lac’s Tim Warner, who looped his car to a stop in turn 2 on lap 27. After Arenz was penalized two spots on the restart for hitting the infield tires, he wasted little time regaining second as he passed Schmidt and last week’s B Mod A-main winner J.J. Walvoord of Howards Grove, who started 11th, on lap 28.

While the rest of field jockeyed for position, Green stayed in control at the front of the pack en route to is sixth PDTR B Mod victory of the 2017 racing season.

Arenz placed second, Walvoord was third, Schmidt ended up fourth and Sturgeon Bay’s Kelsey Hayes placed fifth from her seventh starting spot.

The 25-lap Grand National A main saw Chilton’s Jesse Cullen assume the lead on the drop of the green field from the pole position. Outside front row starter J.J. Pagel kept Cullen in sight throughout the race while also dueling with seventh starter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth over the final five laps of the event.

As Cullen set a blistering place at the front of the pack, 2011 PDTR Grand National champ and current point leader Mark Fieber, who started 11th, Lammers and eighth starter Matt Loehr of Dotyville went three-wide for third place on lap 22 with Loehr gaining control of the spot.

Pagel mounted a big run over the final three laps to close in on Cullen, but it was not quite enough as Cullen posted his first career PDTR Grand National A-main win by three car lengths over runner-up Pagel. Loehr wound up third, Plymouth’s Tyler Kulow, who started sixth, was fourth and Fieber rounded out the top five.

In the 15-lap Micro Sprint A main, rookie Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee led the first six laps from the pole. On lap 3, Jack Vanderboom moved up from his fifth starting spot to take over second.

On lap 7, disaster struck Davis as he spun in turn four while leading to give the top spot over to Vanderboom. Three more cautions slowed the pace over the final eight laps, but Vanderboom held strong to post his third Micro Sprint A main victory of the 2017 PDTR season.

Tory Strauss of Marshall finished second, followed by Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake in third, Davis fourth and Josh Rehberg of Milwaukee fifth. Dave Collins of Madison emerged uninjured after his car went on a wild series of flips in turn four on lap 12.

Danny Schlafer won the Sprint Car B main and Jim Bailey of Oostburg claimed the victory in the B Mod B main.

The trophy sponsor for evening was Sorce Services. The next Plymouth Dirt Track racing program will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26. Racing will begin at 6 p.m.

Pokorski Motorsports racks up fifth straight top-10 showing

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 16, 2017 – Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team kept their top-10 finish streak rolling right along last weekend in 360 Sprint Car racing action at The Plymouth Dirt Track and Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, Pokorski was one of 21 teams signed in to do battle on Past Champions Night at The Plymouth Dirt Track on the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.

The evening got off to a rocky start for Pokorski in the third PDTR Sprint Car heat race. After starting seventh, Pokorski made contact with the frontstretch wall near the midway point of the race and pulled off the track soon after to record a seventh-place showing in the race.

A DNF in his heat race relegated Pokorski to the 20th starting spot in the 25-lap Sprint Car A main. Pokorski was able to make steady progress through the field from the last starting spot thanks in part to five caution periods.

The 25-year racing veteran displayed some nifty driving to avoid an accident in turn two on lap 8 involving Bill Taylor of Lance Fassbender. After restarting 11th, Pokorski managed to pick off three more cars over the final 17 laps to notch a solid eighth-place showing.

We tried something a little different with shocks in the heat race on Saturday night,” Pokorski said. “We found out a little adjustment can make a big change and car was kind of a disaster. The driver also didn’t have his head quite screwed on right and that ended up with me taking down the wall coming out of turn four. I hit it hard enough to bend a wheel and the Jacob’s ladder, so at that point I just pulled off before we wrecked anything else.

We made some small tweaks to go back closer to our baseline for the feature and that made things much better,” Pokorski said. “In the middle portion of the race, I overtightened the car by pulling the wing back too far and that slowed our progress, but overall I was happy to move up 12 spots.”

At intermission, Pokorski was one of a large contingent of former Plymouth champions be honored in front of the grandstand. Pokorski was recognized for winning two Winged Super Modified championships at Plymouth in 2002 and 2003.

The fact that Pokorski made it to Plymouth at all on Saturday night was a feat in itself, as the team’s trailer had a wheel bearing malfunction on the way to the track. Thanks to the help of several racers, crew members, family and friends, Pokorski was able to get back on the road and to the track in time to race.

I definitely have to thank Brandon Knepprath and his crew, as well as the guys and Mueller Sales and Service for their help in getting the wheel bearing replaced on our trailer on Saturday night, or we probably wouldn’t have been able to make it to the track to race either night,” Pokorski said.

On Sunday night, the team ventured to Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie for the final of three Midwest Sprint Car Association appearances at the historic track this season.

With 21 cars signed in, Pokorski started third in the second MSA heat trace. Pokorski held down the third spot until the final lap when Danny Schlafer slipped past in turn two to drop Pokorski to fourth at the finish line.

After just missing the 12-car invert, Pokorski lined up 13th in the 25-lap MSA A main. The 2014 MSA Masters Series champ ran a steady race hovering around the top 10 throughout.

On lap 11, Pokorski found himself in the 11th position and four laps later he moved around Scott Conger to advance to ninth. With two laps to go, Bill Balog, who was filling in for Al Schlafer, got past Pokorski to drop the West Bend driver to 10th as the checkered flag fell. The 10th-place showing marked Pokorski fifth straight top-10 A-main finish.

On Sunday night at Angell Park, we were okay in the heat race,” Pokorski said. “We just struggled to pass cars on the narrow track, which cost us a vital spot at the end of the race. That took us from solidly in the invert to 13th, one spot out of the invert.

The car was actually very good in the feature and we learned some things with the help of Scotty Neitzel from R&H Enterprises,” he said.

Pokorski will return to The Plymouth Dirt Track this Saturday, Aug. 19 for Race Against Cancer Night, which will include a special appearance from Pink Heals of Sheboygan County’s pink fire truck. Racing begins at 6 p.m.

The Pokorski Motorsports sponsors for the 2017 season include: Acme Armature Works Inc., Goeden’s Auto Body, Goodwin Racing Engines, Jens, Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Services & Crematory, Kettle Moraine Landscaping, Novak’s Service Center, Pedal Down Promotions, Christel Sign, Tisler Salvage Inc. and The Cawley Company.

Schlafer, Schmidt, Fieber, Walvoord, Ruh shine in PDTR action

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 12, 2017 – On a night when Plymouth Dirt Track Racing honored the best drivers who have ever strapped into a race car at the venerable Plymouth track, the stars of today treated fans to thrilling finishes and side-by-side racing action as PDTR presented its annual Past Champions Night program Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds.

In the Sprint Car 25-lap headliner Danny Schlafer pulled off a last-lap pass to claim his third A-main triumph of the 2017 season. Likewise, Justin Schmidt of Cleveland executive a final-lap pass of his own to win his first PDTR Late Model A-main event of the year. Former PDTR Grand National champion Mark Fieber of Cascade notched his second main event victory of the season, while J.J. Walvoord of Sheboygan (B Mod) and Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake (Micro Sprint) each picked up their first career A-main victories in their respective divisions.

Will Gerrits of Waupun jumped out the lead with a low move in turn four of the opening lap. Gerrits held down the top spot while Boltonville’s Bill Taylor, who started on the pole, road the high groove to pressure the lead on lap 6.

The first of five caution flags appeared on lap 7 when Tyler Brabant of Waupun spun in turn four. Two more caution periods ensued before another green flag lap was completed. The first came when Taylor and 2008 PDTR Sprint Car champion Lance Fassbender of Burnett collided in turn two, and the second appeared for debris in turn one.

When green flag action resumed, 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champ Kurt Davis of South Milwaukee, who started fifth, used the high line to take second. One lap later, Davis charged around Gerrits to assume the top spot.

Meanwhile, two-time PDTR Sprint Car champion Danny Schlafer powered up from his 11th starting spot to take third on lap 9. After the fourth caution of the race came out for Jeremy Hunt’s spin in turn four, Schlafer flexed his muscle to sweep past Gerrits and Davis to take over the lead on lap 11.

Schlafer and Davis each rode the high groove over the second half of the race with Davis staying within five car lengths as the leaders worked through lapped traffic starting on lap 16.

Just as Schlafer appeared set to cruise to the victory the fifth and final caution flag was displayed on lap 23 when Shane Wenninger of Kewaskum and Waupun’s Tim Haddy made contact in turn three.

That set up a mad two lap dash to the finish between the two winningest drivers in the history of the Midwest Sprint Car Association. After a single-file restart, Davis used the high groove in turns one and two to set up a slide job in turns three and four, which vaulted him past Schlafer into the lead on lap 24.

However, Schlafer was not to be denied as he ducked under Davis in turns one and two and slid in front of Davis in turn four of the final lap to post his third PDTR Sprint Car victory of the season, 19th career A-main PDTR Sprint Car triumph and 48th MSA A-main victory of his career.

Davis finished second by just a car length, point leader Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh, who started seventh, finished third, 10th starter Justin Miller of Plymouth placed fourth and Dannon Tessmer of Slinger rounded out the top five after starting eighth.

The caution-free 25-lap Late Model A main rolled off with polesitter Jim Letizia of Milwaukee leading the first three circuits before 2014 PDTR Late Model champ Mitch McGrath, who started fifth, used the high groove in turn two to power past Letizia into the lead on lap 4.

As McGrath held a half-straightway lead at the front of the field, defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler of Glenbuelah used the low and middle groove to work his way into third place on lap 5 and second place on lap 7.

Buhler gradually began to reel in McGrath over the next 14 laps before pulling even with McGrath in turn two on lap 21. The two former champions dueled side by side on lap 22 before second starter Justin Schmidt of Cleveland, who dropped well back in the field on the start, charged in to pressure the leaders.

On lap 24 used the extreme low line to sneak past Buhler into second and he continued his momentum to dip underneath McGrath in the final turn to seal his first A-main victory of the 2017 season and fifth triumph of his PDTR Late Model career in the non-stop race.

McGrath had to settle for second by less than a car length, Buhler wound up third, fourth starter Jim Schmidt of Cleveland placed fourth and Chris Carlson of Union Grove rounded out the top five after starting third.

Mark Fieber took the lead on the drop of the green flag in the 25-lap Grand National A main from the pole position.

Outside front row starter Jeff Lammers of Plymouth held tight to Fieber along the low groove during the first 11 laps before two-time PDTR Grand National champ Don Sorce Jr. of West Allis worked the high line to work past Lammers into second on lap 12.

Sorce Jr. then moved in to challenge Fieber for the lead on lap 14. The two former Grand National champs dueled side by side over the next two laps, but Fieber was too tough and Sorce Jr. eventually fell in line behind him on lap 15. On lap 20, Sorce Jr. ventured high again to pressure Fieber, but again Fieber fended off the advances of Sorce Jr.

The lone caution of the race appeared on lap 23 when Dick Hed of Plymouth and Brian Cesar of Sheboygan spun to a stop. On the restart, Lammers moved past Sorce Jr. into second up high on lap 24. However, Sorce Jr. battled back to take second at the finish as Fieber cruised to his second PDTR Grand National A-main victory of the season and 12th career A-main triumph at the Plymouth track.

Sorce Jr. was second, Lammers took third, fifth starter Kurt Davis placed fourth and third starter Tyler Kulow of Plymouth claimed fifth.

Polesitter J.J. Walvoord took the lead on lap one of the 25-lap B Mod A main as Chad Vetting of Valders mounted a huge run to work his way into second from the seventh starting spot.

On lap 2, former PDTR Outlaw Compact champ Travis Arenz of Sheboygan, who was filling in for Justin Bauer, moved into second from his eighth starting position. Arenz then proceeded to close the gap on Walvoord before the first of four caution flags appeared on lap 12 when Brandon Berth of Plymouth spun in turn four.

After two more cautions, Arenz continued to hound Walvoord along the low to middle groove. However, Walvoord fended off each of Arenz’s efforts. Meanwhile, point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls, who started 11th, used the high groove to challenge Arenz for second starting on lap 18.

Following one more caution, Arenz and Green continued their duel for second place as Walvoord maintain the lead. At the finish line, it was Walvoord claiming his first career PDTR B Mod A-main victory.

Arenz finished second, Green was third, fifth starter Cody Eickberg of Plymouth place fourth and Vetting rounded out the top five.

In the 15-lap Micro Sprint A main, Preston Ruh grabbed the initial lead from the pole and held off repeated challenges from second starter Dave Collins of Madison on the way to his first career Micro Sprint A-main triumph.

Collins was second, Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee took third and Josh Rehberg of Milwaukee placed fourth.

Ten Vintage Modifieds were also on hand to stage an exhibition race.

The trophy sponsor for evening was Pit Stop Pizza. The next Plymouth Dirt Track racing program on Saturday, Aug. 19 will feature Race Against Cancer Night with a special appearance by Pink Heals of Sheboygan County and the pink fire truck. Racing will begin at 6 p.m.

Pokorski Motorsports picks up another top-10 showing

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 9, 2017 – Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team kept a recent string of top-10 A-main finishes in 360 Sprint Car action alive at the 21st annual Frank Filskov Memorial event Saturday, Aug. 5, at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis.

Racing action was delayed for over an hour after showers moved through the Plymouth area just prior to hot laps. After some quick work from the Plymouth track crew, the evening resumed with racey track conditions prevailing throughout the program.

With 28 PDTR 360 Sprint Cars on hand, Pokorski lined up fourth in the third heat race. The 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion found himself locked in a battle with Dick Kaiser in the early going of the 10-lap heat race.

After going back and forth with Kaiser over the first three laps, Pokorski seized the position for good on lap 4. The 25-year veteran went on to post a fourth-place showing to earn a spot among the 16 drivers transferring directly to the A main.

After the passing points were tallied from the heat races, Pokorski started the 27-lap A main from the 16th position. After a strong start in the opening laps, Pokorski settled into the 12th spot on lap 5.

As Pokorski worked the middle to the top of the track in an attempt to move up through the field, disaster struck ahead of him on lap 16 as a five-car incident brought out a red flag involving Lance Fassbender and Doug Wondra, who each flipped hard after tangling in turn one.

The incident happened just ahead of Pokorski, who luckily was able to move high to avoid the melee. The accident forced four cars out the race and vaulted Pokorski to the 10th spot when the race resumed.

On lap 18, Pokorski worked around Scott Conger to assume ninth. Pokorski held on to ninth at the finish to post the team’s third straight top-10 finish.

“I thought the track was really good considering the fact that they got rained on twice right before we got started,” Pokorski said. “I would have loved to have seen the track without the rain. I think it would have been even better.

“The car was decent all night, we just had some unfortunate circumstances,” he said. “I saw the wreck in turn one and got tapped just a little bit by one of the cars involved as I went past. That was too close for comfort.”

This weekend Pokorski Motorsports is set to compete in the final MSA Saturday-Sunday doubleheader of the 2017 racing season Saturday, Aug. 12 at Plymouth and Sunday, Aug. 13 at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie.

“I’m really looking forward to another two-day weekend,” Pokorski said. “The car counts for the MSA traveling events have been great this year and I hope that continues.

“I wish we had a few more doubleheaders left this year,” he said. “I’m disappointed that’s the last one of the season already. The summer goes by way too fast.”

This Saturday, Aug. 12 is Past Champions Night at The Plymouth Dirt Track. Pokorski, who won back-to-back Winged Super Modified championships at the Plymouth track in 2003 and 2004, will be one of the former track champions recognized during the event. Racing begins at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 13, Pokorski will participate in the third and final MSA event of the season at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Thiel stays red hot with Plymouth IRA Sprint Car triumph

Melis tops PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main, Boden rules Micro Sprints

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 5, 2017 – Over the past month of the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car season, no driver has been hotter than Sheboygan racer Scotty Thiel.

Considering his performance in the 21st annual Frank Filskov Memorial A main at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds Saturday, Aug. 5, it doesn’t appear that Thiel will be cooling off anytime soon.

Thiel, who came into the event second in the IRA point standings behind seven-time series champ Bill Balog of Hartland, claimed a wire-to-wire victory in the 27-lap Sprint Car A-main.

In the 27-lap PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main, Jim Melis of Glenbleulah claimed the A-main win, while Zach Boden of Cambridge notched the PDTR Micro Sprint A-main win.

Thiel bolted out to the lead of the IRA A-main from his outside front row starting spot on the opening lap, while polesitter Dave Uttech of Kenosha settled into second in the early going.

Meanwhile, the evening’s fast qualifier Bill Balog worked his way into third from his fifth starting spot on lap 2. At the front of the field, Thiel quickly stretched out a half straightaway cushion over Uttech before he encountered lapped traffic starting on lap 5.

On the same lap, Balog bolted past Uttech to assume the runner-up spot on lap 5. As the leaders worked through dense lapped traffic, Balog closed the gap on Thiel on lap 11 along the low groove.

However, Balog was briefly bottled up behind two lapped cars racing side by side, which allowed Thiel to build up a half-straightaway cushion by lap 18. Thiel’s advantage was erased on lap 18 when two-time IRA champion Scotty Neitzel of Beaver Dam spun to a stop between turns three and four.

With Balog on his rear bumper, Thiel flexed his muscle on the restart to fend off Balog’s attempt to duck low and wrestle away the lead. By lap 21, Thiel had carved out a half-straightaway lead over Balog, who is the winningest driver in IRA history.

In the final six laps, Balog came to life pushing his Rhine Auto machine the limit to reel in Thiel along the treacherous outside groove. Using a big run on the final lap, Balog dove low to pull nearly even with Thiel heading to the checkered flag. However, Thiel was just too strong as he held off Balog by just over a car length at the finish line.

The A-main victory was Thiel’s fourth IRA main event win of the season and eighth overall in his IRA career. Thiel has now won four the last seven IRA A-main events, including three of the last four.

Balog had to settle for second, third starter Wayne Modjeski of Oak Creek placed third, Blake Nimee of Oswego, Ill. placed fourth after starting ninth and Uttech rounded out the top five.

“The track was really different than what it normally is here,” Thiel said. “Usually it slicks off and has a curb. My crew guys worked their tails off to give me a great car tonight. “We’ve been on a hot streak lately and I just want to keep riding it as long as we can.”

Balog, who came into the event with a 104-point lead over Thiel in the IRA point standings, put together a solid night to remain in control of the IRA point lead.

“We were fast all night on a very fast track,” Balog said. “I was trying to go for the win in the last few laps, but I couldn’t quite get to him.”

Modjeski was pleased after posting his best A-main finish of the IRA season.

“It felt good to have a good car all night,” Modjeski said. “I can’t say enough about everyone that helps me out. They have done an incredible job to help me get out here with these guys in the top three tonight.”

In the 27-lap PDTR 360 Sprint Car A main, 40-year veteran Al Schlafer of Sussex grabbed the lead on the opening lap from the pole. On lap 2, 2010 PDTR Sprint Car champ Kurt Davis drove low to pass outside front row starter Tim Haddy of Waupun for second.

Davis quickly moved in to challenge Schlafer and on lap 11 the Midwest Sprint Car Association career A-main victory leader swept past Schlafer to assume the top spot. Two laps later, Davis spun in turn two as Slinger’s Dannon Tessmer suffered a steering malfunction directly in front of him in turn two on lap 13.

After Davis restarted at the rear of the field, Schlafer inherited the lead back with fourth starter Will Gerrits of Waupun second and seventh starter Jim Melis running third.

On lap 16, a four-car incident in turn one sent the cars of Doug Wondra of Oakfield and 2008 PDTR Sprint Car champion Lance Fassbender of Burnett flipping. Wayne Modjeski and Anthony Knierim of Franksville were also involved in the melee. Both Wondra’s and Fassbender’s cars were heavily damaged and both drivers were done for the night.

On the restart, Melis worked his way into second and wasted no time closing in on Schlafer for the lead. On lap 21, Melis used the low line to power past Schlafer in turn three. Four laps later, 12th starter Justin Miller of Plymouth worked past Schlafer to gain the runner-up spot.

Out in front, Melis cruised over the final six laps to notch his second A-main victory of the season, 16th career PDTR A-main win and 19th overall Midwest Sprint Car Association main event triumph.

Miller was second, Schlafer took third, Gerrits claimed fourth and point leader and 10th starter Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh posted a fifth-place showing after his team executed an engine change between his heat race and the A main.

Rookie Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake led the first seven laps of the 20-lap PDTR Micro Sprint A main from the fourth starting spot. On lap 8, 2016 PDTR Micro Sprint champ Zach Boden, who started sixth, used the low groove to pass Ruh for the lead.

From there, Boden pulled out to a half lap victory over the final 12 laps en route to his fifth career PDTR Micro Sprint A-main triumph. 10th starter Dave Collins of Madison was second, fifth starter Jack Vanderboom of Dousman placed third, Ruh wound up fourth and third starter Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee claimed fifth.

B main victories went to Bill Wirth of Cudahy (IRA 410 Sprint Car) and Lance Fassbender (PDTR 360 Sprint Car).

The racing program, which honored longtime IRA competitor Frank Filskov, who died in a racing accident in October 1996, was delayed for over any hour by rain. After quick work by the track crew, the night went on as scheduled on a lightning fast track surface, which yielded track record times in heat race action.

The evening was sponsored by JDL Automotive. The next Plymouth Dirt Track racing program on Saturday, Aug. 12 will honor all past champions at the Plymouth track. Racing will begin at 6 p.m.

Pokorski Motorsports gets back to the front

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 2, 2017 – The ebb and flow of the 2017 racing season flipped back to the good side for Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team over back-to-back nights at The Plymouth Dirt Track and Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie last weekend.

On Saturday, July 29, the team was among 25 PDTR Sprint Cars which signed in to do battle on the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds third-mile clay oval. The night got off to a rousing start as Pokorski drove to his first heat race victory of the season, following a spirited duel with Tim Haddy in the second Sprint Car heat race.

After lining up sixth in the A-main, Pokorski raced in the top five throughout most of the event and advanced into the top three following an accident involving Danny Schlafer and Tim Haddy. Pokorski battled with Doug Wondra and Justin Miller in the closing stages of the 25-lap main event before taking the checkered flag in second place behind first-time PDTR A-main winner Kevin Karnitz.

It was nice to come out on the winning end of a nice side-by-side battle with Tim Haddy in the heat race,” Pokorski said. “In the main, the car was decent. We had another good race with Justin Miller and finished with a solid second.”

On Sunday, the team ventured to the historic Angell Park Speedway on Sunday night for the second of three scheduled appearances for the Midwest Sprint Car Association at the Sun Prairie speed plant this season.

With 21 MSA cars in the pit area, Pokorski lined up third in the second heat race. After getting shuffled back in the pack at the start of the 10-lap race, Pokorski came home fifth. He automatically advanced to the A main where he started 15th.

The first half of the 25-lap A main proved to be relatively uneventful for Pokorski as he maintained the 15th position as the caution flew on lap 15. On the restart, the 2014 MSA Masters Series champion found his groove as he used the high line to sweep past Tony Wondra, Josh Teunissen and Doug Wondra with a big move in turns one and two to advance to 12th.

The caution was displayed again on lap 23 when Ryan Mayr flipped along the backstretch. After restarting 10th, Pokorski bolted past Will Gerrits and Dannon Tessmer on the restart to come home with a solid eighth-place showing in a race won by Danny Schlafer.

On Sunday night, we just got bad start in heat, which got us behind and in the back of the pack to start the A main,” Pokorski said. “Once traffic thinned a bit in the feature, we got rolling pretty good and managed to get a pretty decent eighth-place finish. It was a pretty good weekend overall. I’m happy anytime we go forward.”

This Saturday, Aug. 5, Pokorski will return to The Plymouth Dirt Track for PDTR Sprint Car action. The Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Cars will also be competing, along with the PDTR Micro Sprints. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

The Pokorski Motorsports sponsors for the 2017 season include: Acme Armature Works Inc., Goeden’s Auto Body, Goodwin Racing Engines, Jens, Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Services & Crematory, Kettle Moraine Landscaping, Novak’s Service Center, Pedal Down Promotions, Christel Sign, Tisler Salvage Inc. and The Cawley Company.

Mars bags big money in Plymouth Dirt Kings Late Model special

Block claims first PDTR B Mod A-main triumph

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTINS) July 31, 2017 – Jimmy Mars of Menomonie lived up to his “Iceman” moniker in the inaugural Dirt Kings Late Model 50-lap main event at The Plymouth Dirt Track Monday, July 31.

While his nearest competitors put their cars to the ultimate test working the high groove feverishly throughout the non-stop event, the cagey veteran multi-time Dirt Late Model crown jewel race winner bided his time along the inside lane, saving his tires wisely for the stretch run on the way to his first Dirt Kings Late Model A-main victory worth a cool $4,000.

The special weeknight race drew a stellar field of 34 local, regional and national level drivers to kick off a weeklong series of high-dollar Dirt Late Model races in Wisconsin featuring the national-touring World of Outlaws Late Model series.

After claiming the top qualifying time of the night, Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill. led the field to the green flag from the pole with Plymouth Dirt Track Racing regular Jim Schmidt of Cleveland on the outside of the front row.

After a flurry of action on the opening lap, which saw Shirley and Schmidt trade the lead, inside second row starter Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill. ducked low to pace the opening circuit.

The next 12 laps saw Feger ride the high groove exclusively with Shirley sticking to the low to middle line on the smooth multi-groove racing surface. The two longtime Midwestern rivals dueled side by side until lap 13 when heavy lapped traffic bottled up the track and forced the leaders to scramble for a way through the logjam.

On lap 16, Jim Letizia of Milwaukee got sideway in front of Shirley along the low groove, which forced Shirley to check up and opened the door for Jimmy Mars, who started fourth, to assume the runner-up spot.

Two laps later, Mars inched past Feger to take the lead briefly before Feger battled back to gain the top spot on lap 21. In dense lapped traffic, Mars slipped past Feger on the bottom of the track to take the lead on lap 25, but again Feger powered to the front along the high groove on lap 29, as Shirley rebounded to rejoin the highly entertaining battle for the lead.

As Feger and Shirley continued to pound the cushion and occasionally venture to the middle and low grooves to negotiate past slower cars, Mars stayed tuck down low and eventually assumed the top spot for good on lap 34 while Shirley following into second.

By lap 39, Mars had built up a half straight advantage with Shirley and Feger left to duel it out for second. Lapped traffic again made things interesting in the final seven laps as Shirley and Feger closed to within striking distance.

However, Mars was not to be denied as he went on to post his third victory of the 2017 season by a three-car length margin over Shirley. Feger came home third with Dirt Kings point leader Nick Anvelink of Navarino, who started ninth, following in in fourth. World of Outlaws series regular Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, capped off an impressive charge from the 15th starting spot to finish fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 were Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark. (sixth), Brent Larson of Lake Elmo, Minn. (seventh), Justin Hirt of Tigerton (eighth), Jared Siefert of Luxemburg (ninth) and Waukesha’s Mitch McGrath (10th).

“Jason and Brian both ran a good race and I just tried to keep a nice pace in lapped traffic and run a good line when those guys got to racing hard up on the top,” Mars said. “It was a chess match in traffic and luckily it worked in our favor. We’ve been close to getting wins all year and tonight luck went our way.”

In the 25-lap PDTR B Mod A main, Wyatt Block of Marion got the jump on the start with outside front row starter Travis Arenz of Sheboygan following in second and Chilton’s Travis Hansen, who started fourth, third.

Block, Arenz and Hansen stayed glued to the bottom of the track throughout the non-stop race with Arenz unable to close to within striking distance until the leader encountered lapped cars on lap 20.

Although Arenz was able to close up to Block’s bumper in the closing laps, he was unable to mount a challenge for the lead as Block held strong to post his first PDTR B Mod A-main triumph in his first appearance at Plymouth.

Arenz finished second, Hansen was third, Green Bay’s Hunter Parsons, who started fifth, placed fourth and ninth starter Joel Seegert of Sheboygan rounded out the top five.

Both A-main events were contested caution free, which accounted for 75 total laps of non-stop racing.

Chris Engels of Green Bay won the Dirt Kings Late Model C main, while Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha captured the Dirt Kings Late Model B main. Brandon Berth of Plymouth was victorious in the PDTR B Mod B main.

The next Plymouth Dirt Track racing program on Saturday, Aug. 5 will feature the second appearance of the season of the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series. PDTR 360 Sprint Cars and Micro Sprints will also be on the all-open-wheel card. The trophy sponsor will be JDL Automotive and Detailing. Hot laps will begin at 6 p.m. with IRA qualifying and racing to follow.

Karnitz, Mueller, Sorce, Green, Collins claim PDTR triumphs

By Jeff Pederson – Pedal Down Promotions

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 29, 2017 – On a picture-perfect evening for racing, Plymouth Dirt Track Racing competitors, crews, staff and fans gathered to share in a program which provided a little bit of everything – from the joy of first-time A-main winners, to the spectacle of thrilling finishes, to the heartbreak of mechanical misfortune, to the excitement of the popular Kids’ Backpack Night giveaway at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth Saturday, July 29.

It was certainly a night West Bend’s Kevin Karnitz will never forget as he picked up his first career PDTR Sprint Car A main victory. Three-time PDTR Late Model champion and current point leader Brad Mueller of Random lake notched his second A-main win of the season, while Dan Sorce of West Allis registered his third Grand National A-main triumph of the season. Point leader Justin Green of Sheboygan Falls continued his stranglehold on the competition by notching his fifth PDTR B Mod A-main victory of the 2017 campaign and Dave Collins of Madison notched his first career PDTR Micro Sprint main event win.

Polesitter Tim Haddy of Waupun and outside front row starter Dick Kaiser of Milwaukee led the 22-car Sprint Car field to the green flag in the 25-lap A-main with Haddy grabbing the early lead.

Two-time PDTR Sprint Car champ Danny Schlafer of Sussex used the outside line to power his way from his eighth starting spot to third on the opening lap. On lap 3, fourth starter Kevin Karnitz worked his way past Haddy into the lead.

While Karnitz gradually built up a solid eight-car advantage, Haddy and Schlafer battled back and forth for the runner-up spot as the two veteran racers exchanged slide jobs over the span of several laps.

On lap 8, Karnitz began to encounter lapped traffic and shortly after Schlafer cleared Haddy for second and quickly closed in on Karnitz for the lead. By lap 11, Schlafer worked both the high and low grooves to pressure Karnitz for the top spot.

Two laps later, Schlafer swept past Karnitz with a big slide job. However, a caution flag shortly after negated the both and kept Karnitz in the lead.

Karnitz pulled out to a solid lead on the ensuing restart as Schlafer found himself again engaged with Haddy in a battle for second. Shortly after, Schlafer and Haddy collided in turn one and collected 2008 PDTR Sprint Car champion Lance Fassbender of Burnett to trigger a caution period.

Schlafer managed to make repairs in the work area and return to the rear of the field, but Haddy and Fassbender were done for the night.

When the race resumed, Karnitz remained entrenched in the lead with fifth starter Doug Wondra of Oakfield second and Paul Pokorski of West Bend, who started sixth, in third and seventh starter Justin Miller of Plymouth fourth.

Pokorski and Miller each showed their strength in the closing laps to challenge Karnitz for the top spot. However, Karnitz was not to be denied as he hung on to post his first career PDTR Sprint Car A-main victory in his eighth season wheeling a Sprint Car.

Pokorski placed second, Miller was third, PDTR Sprint Car point leader Brandon McMullen charged with up the 15th starting spot to finish fourth and Kenjay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls moved all the way up from 19th at the start to place fifth.

Former PDTR Late Model champion Billy Rezutek of Big Bend outpowered polesitter Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha along the high line to take the lead on the drop of the green flag of the 25-lap Late Model A main.

On lap 2, Union Grove’s Chris Carlson, who started third, snuck under Rezutek to grab the lead. However, Rezutek used the cushion to reclaim the lead on lap 7. Behind Rezutek and Carlson, fifth starter Brad Mueller and Cleveland’s Justin Schmidt, who started sixth, mounted their own side-by-side duel for third.

As the laps wound down, Rezutek found himself approaching lapped traffic on lap 19 with Mueller and Schmidt still mounting an epic duel for third close behind Carlson.

With the top four cars bunched tightly in slower traffic, Mueller dove to the bottom of the track on lap 22 to clear a lapped car in the middle of the track, as well as Rezutek, who was running the extremely high. The thrilling move gave Mueller the lead, which he maintained over the final three laps en route to his 18th career Late Model A main victory.

Carlson was second, Rezutek finished third, Schmidt took fourth and defending PDTR Late Model champion Tim Buhler of Glenbeulah placed fifth after starting ninth.

In the 25-lap Grand National A main, 2008 PDTR Grand National champion Matt Yancey of Sheboygan held the early lead before former PDTR Late Model champ Dan Sorce, who started fourth, used a strong outside move to seize the lead in turn four on lap 7.

Sorce endured a pair of caution periods over the final 18 laps to post his seventh career PDTR Grand National A main victory. Outside front row starter Matt Loehr of Dotyville placed second, followed by sixth starter Tyler Kulow of New Holstein in third, 2011 PDTR Grand National champion Mark Fieber of Cascade, who charged from the 14th starting spot to place fourth, and Yancey, who wound up fifth.

Polesitter Brandon Knepprath of Kewaskum, who won his first career heat race earlier in the evening, and Mark Hoeppner lead the 25-lap B Mod A main to the green flag from the front row.

Hoeppner gained the early advantage over 2016 PDTR B Mod champ Brandon Berth of Plymouth, who started fourth in second. Meanwhile, Justin Green was the man on the move as he worked his way into the top five from his 11th starting spot on lap 3.

Point leader Justin Green, who started 11th, entered the top five by lap three and wasted little time in challenging for the lead. After a pair of caution periods, Green swept past Hoeppner into the lead following a restart on lap 6.

Green would not be headed the rest of the way as he bolted away to notch his fifth B Mod A main victory of the season and his career. Travis Hansen of Chilton of charged from the 17th starting spot to finish second, Berth was third, third starter Rick Kretschmann of Sheboygan Falls finished fourth and seventh starter Brian Konitzer of Sheboygan placed fifth.

Fourth starter Dave Collins picked up his first career PDTR Micro Sprint A main victory in the 15-lap main event, followed by Tory Strauss of Waterloo (second), Preston Ruh of Elkhart Lake (third), Emily Portschy of Plymouth (fourth) and Tyler Davis of South Milwaukee (fifth).

B main victories went to Tony Wondra of Campbellsport (Sprint Car) and Travis Hansen (B Mod).

Over 75 youngsters received special backpacks from a driver as part of the second annual PDTR Kids Backpack Night giveaway and Buffalo Wild Wings served as the evening’s trophy sponsor.

Former Plymouth flagman and track prep worker Bob Mertes who passed away earlier in the day, was remembered for his contributions to racing at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds track before the start of the Sprint Car A-main.

The next Plymouth Dirt Track racings program on Saturday, Aug. 5 will feature the second appearance of the season of the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series. PDTR 360 Sprint Cars and Micro Sprints will also be on the all-open-wheel card. The trophy sponsor will be JDL Automotive and Detailing.
