Lynn Schmalz of Appleton, Wis. has released her first children’s book “What Is School?”

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) November 22, 2021 – After accumulating a wide variety of experiences as a lifelong learner in her roles a school paraprofessional, nurse, mother and babysitter, Lynn Schmalz of Appleton, Wis. has captured her observations, ideas and lessons related to acceptance, open-minded learning and a diverse educational approach in her debut children’s book “What Is School?”

Published by Pedal Down Promotions of Manitowoc, Wis., Schmalz’s debut book features 26 pages of encouraging words and thoughtful, full-color illustrations that will easily appeal to children, as well as adults sharing in their child’s reading journey.

A native of Kaukauna, Wis, Schmalz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and is presently employed as a paraprofessional in the Kimberly Area School District.

Schmalz initially got the idea to write and illustrate “What Is School?” after receiving inspiration from another book about school.

“After reading Dr. Ross Greene’s book, ‘Lost At School,’ I was convinced that my way of thinking could be improved,” Schmalz said. “I was compelled to share what I have learned with others by writing this book.”

The theme that resonates throughout “What Is School?” is how open and accepting communication is key among students, staff, parents and community members in forging a successful school learning environment.

“I believe that life is enhanced when we actively take responsibility for our learning through collaboration and communication with others,” Schmalz said. “As a result, we will learn successful strategies to solve problems. The process is worth the effort.

“The main theme of the book is that lifelong learners continue to improve and grow,” she said. “When the going gets tough…collaborate, communicate and celebrate the journey.”

Schmalz hopes “What Is School?” proves to be both enjoyable and usable for young readers.

“I believe that a book like mine would be helpful to all who wish to improve because we can always learn if we are open to it,” Schmalz said.

Lynn Schmalz, a former nurse and current paraprofessional with the Kimberly School District in Kimberly, Wis., has published her first book through Pedal Down Promotions titled “What Is School?”

Schmalz also intends to schedule some community and school events to help launch “What Is School?”

“I would like to do some public events to help share the book with the community,” Schmalz said. “I will look into any library author events and maybe a school event as well.”
